It's a question that we might never have thought about, but it's an interesting to think about - how could things change here at SN when more people start arriving?
It might be interesting to imagine some of the possibilities.
It's all an experiment, there's so many variables - but we might imagine that a few things could happen...

Professional Cowboys

It's possible that more people will choose to spend more of their time posting, commenting and zapping here.
Some people might even make posting their main source of revenue - in essence becoming professional Cowboys.
If both user numbers go up, and the popularity of Bitcoin goes up too - it's highly likely that we'll see professional cowboys here.

A change in the diversity of opinion?

Maybe I've been living in a bubble here, but it seems a pretty chill place here. Perhaps we've got a lot more in common than we have in differences between us.
I might be right, but it's also possible that there's a hidden undercurrent that I can't see.
It's feasible that some stackers have been sitting on personal, maybe unpopular, opinions fearing that if they voice them this might reduce their sat flow.
If user numbers increase, they might begin to find their people or feel it's okay to break ground as there'll be enough support in numbers for them to feel free to say what they believe and feel.

Would the overall nature of users change?

With people arriving without a background/interest in tech, privacy there's going to be a lot more exposure of personal details here.
I once noticed a new user seemingly type their home address into their bio - thankfully deleting it later.
As time goes on, newcomers may start to learn from those in the know new people should hopefully pull back on what personal things that they share.
We've got the tech guys running the show with some serious financial backing, so the servers should be able to cope - unless something weird happens.
If we do get a huge, sustained influx of new users in a short amount of time they could bring with them all of the habits they have from using mainstream social media, could the clued-in vibe of SN become engulfed?
I doubt we should worry about that. If that happens, then we're approaching hyperbitcoinization. Using and understanding Bitcoin, through using it, will be highly educational - the old guard won't be forgotten, they should instead be seen as a sources of knowledge.

Requiring payment for posting creates a significant filter.

I just want to say to anyone who might be "sitting on personal, maybe unpopular, opinions fearing that if they voice them this might reduce their sat flow", let your freak flag fly. Stackers are super chill whenever I've seen odd or contrarian views voiced.
The one concern I have is that we might struggle to absorb a rapid influx of toxic social media behavior. I've noticed that occasionally people come in pretty hot when they first discover SN, then over time they mellow out. I don't know how much of that behavior we can absorb without turning off our current stackers.

Excellent observation! I noticed it too.
SN right now has the vibes of the "good parts" of HN1. Maybe how it was back in 2008 or so...

Footnotes

  1. I was a very early HN poster and maybe one of the first 2000 or 3000 users on Reddit. I can't really stand either now but for different reasons. HN has become a smarmy bootlicker state-lover fest. There is occasionally still some great technical discussions there, but I no longer post because any mention of central banks, money printing, or bitcoin elicits their bootlicking responses.....and poor Reddit, to think that back in 2007/8 timeframe it was basically the Ron Paul site....

Agreed. Just to follow up on this for @Bitman — it's a 'free speech' zone around here, but a man's got to bring an argument. If someone comes here to advocate shitcoins, the deck isn't stacked against them because “we just hate that opinion, boo hoo,” but because those arguments have been heard, considered, and tossed a thousand times.
Also, in terms of politics, a lot of political content doesn't get much engagement because many guys here just don't care. But I've seen all kinds of views expressed.

Yes, I remember how @Undisciplined was questioned about his veganism and was amazed at the questions and his great answer as to why he became a vegan.
We do get a lot of critical (in the good sense) thought here - a real step up from everyday life.
That's why I like it - it can't help but up your game.

Ironically, I think I revealed that information in a very irritating "conversation" with an obnoxious political partisan. However, there was subsequently a civil conversation where it was discussed, which is probably what you're thinking of.
reply
Maybe I didn't see the closing of your conversation in context.
I think your justification was a bit of a head spinner, it was for me. If I remember rightly they thanked you and just went away.
For me, it was a memorable high watermark for SN.
Yup, that's definitively ironic.

That sounds more like the second conversation.

Just like Bitcoin, whose estuary was born within the cryptography and cypherpunk community met first a river then a sea of people, it's inevitable that SN will too.
Perhaps we could learn a lesson from the samurai in The Seven Samurai and let only a few people in at a time.1
I think I've heard k00b speak about doing things gradually.
We might not be grateful for a swarm of hornets just yet.

Well, if you look back, so many things have changed already. What will come is just exciting anyway!

A bit like Bitcoin itself!

I'm almost there. Not addicted, but... SN is the best

Organic growth will more or less match the desires of the people involved to the extent it is not distorted by interventions but allowed to grow on its own accord. For instance, if devs were to advertise the site heavily on 'grandma cat picture forum' it would change things a bit. But if the people who enjoy what is already here arrive and join, and the people who don't care for bitcoin, don't see the value, don't enjoy the discussion, and don't get rewards for low quality contributions die of attrition, (as will occur naturally) the culture will be maintained.

Grandma and cats would be such an unexpected Trojan horse.
Sounds great for ~dogs_and_cats territory. Maybe @siggy47 would be up for this?
Who wouldn't want to go home at Thanksgiving and see that it's now grandma championing Bitcoin.

But seriously, I think there is room for everyone. SN is a great way to show that Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet and can be used by everyone.
If some bitcoiners are turned off by new territories, that's okay. They don't seem to have vanished altogether.
If some normies are turned off by the territories that we enjoy, that's okay too.
I think the culture of both Bitcoin and SN is growth experimentation and change - photos of cats should be slowly welcomed.
After all, that's why the Internet was invented /s

The question is how it would change as it grows. If it is changed through distorted interventions aimed at a demographic that is not currently represented, it would change toward that demographic, while if it is allowed to grow organically, the existing culture will be more maintained. Although my post takes a clear side on the issue, in that it implies that a change of culture from what we have is less desirable than scaling while maintaining the culture, I don't think I said there isn't room for everyone, or that photos of cats aren't welcome. It's just that I don't believe there will be significant negative side effects of growth if there is no attempt to distort what happens naturally, while $3 trillion dollars spent in attempt to bring on XRP fans might well result in a hostile takeover of the GitHub (as though XRP fans can code). I'm just trying to illustrate the balance there.
That said, I'm with you, this is the #1 way to onboard actively. There are many social media / nostr onboards, and there's just investing in Bitcoin with Cashapp and such - but this gets people using sats and providing value and absorbing quality information all in one, so it's a great place to bring Norm. I mean, that's why I'm here :D
I think there comes a point where the fiat price of the sats earned on posts looks kinda crazy to the normie, like there are already old posts that earned, 100k, 1million sats etc and these are possible marketing for SN that attract well a gold rush of people.
As BTC rises and people look around at the ecosystem they'll look at those posts and be like how can this shitty post or meme or comment earn 10, 100, or $1000 that nuts, who knows maybe it brings spammers or maybe it just increases the quality as people compete for sats now as the numbers look fiat attractive
