Hey all,
My name is Alex and I work at a company called Kaboomracks selling Bitcoin miners. Hopefully you have heard of us. I'm not here necessarily here to shill, although I would like more miner sales. I've been a lurker on Stacker for a little bit now and love the incentives.
I have some friends who are content creators putting stuff on this platform to monetize, and I like to make content related to mining seeing as I work in the industry. I plan to try and contribute to this community with any knowledge I may have on the topic.
I was wondering if there were people interesting in mining or mining related topics that are on this platform, and if I should go through the process of creating a mining territory?
Also what are the incentives of operating/moderating a territory?
I love the idea.
reply
I'd be interested in that territory. I'd also be interested in the content if it went into other territories, though.
reply
Welcome! I think it's great for the SN to have more territories, but you need to make sure you have time to manage them. I haven't seen many posts about mining, so that's something to keep in mind.
reply
Yeah I think for it to be worth my time, I would have to convince a bunch of miners to get on here and make valuable content. I've got some ideas
reply
It's worth giving it a shot
reply
Bitcoin is mining and mining is Bitcoin. I think there's no need for a separate territory for mining.
reply
Yeah I could see that. I also am attracted to the idea of setting the tone of a territory so it's not a shill fest of brokers and hosting companies. Keeping the setting for content.
reply
It doesn't matter if you post announcements, promotions, shill for x product. It's all related to Bitcoin. If you really want to sell something, you could use the Agora territory.
reply
Really what I'm looking for is a way to convince myself to write more content about mining. I think Stacker zaps is interesting enough. I'll take your advice and stick to Bitcoin for now.
A separate territory would make more sense if I bring a bunch of miners to this platform.
reply
But if you start discussions in a separate room, less people will listen to you. Or do you think the miners are some kind of elitist club like Bilderberg ? 😂😂😂
Yes, SN is a very good platform to post guides and articles. Stackers love good content.
reply
I just figured the points of territories is to let separate communities form on the platform with different cultures. I'm coming to this platform with the context of Reddit where different communities are protective of different topics.
Definitely not elitism, though I would enjoy being a part of a good cabal of some sort.

welcome to SN!
some info on territory incentives from the Stacker News FAQ (link in footer)
Territory owners earn 50% of all fees generated by content in their specific territory. This means territory owners earn 5% of all sats zapped within their territory, as well as 50% of all sats paid as boosts or posting costs within their territory. These rewards are paid to territory owners each day
personally, i think it’s a worthwhile experiment - we have territories for other bitcoin adjacent topics like ecash and lightning already
reply
topics like ecash and lightning already
Those should be absorbed by the main one Bitcoin. It doesn't make sense those ones.
reply
I agree w/ this

Hi Alex!
I love things to be compartmentalised, so a separate territory sounds lovely.
Besides empowering small-scale miners, I also hope you could pen articles that dispel the myth that BTC mining is environmentally harmful. I think this misconception is really damaging for the space. I got these facts from Messari’s Crypto Theses 2023 (see below). More such information would be great in the event that I need to defend Bitcoin’s honour. Haha.
N welcome to SN!
  1. Bitcoin mining produces a lot of e-waste annually, about the same amount as a country the size of the Netherlands. Only about 17% of this e-waste is recycled today.
  2. Bitcoin miners have been using wastes and stranded energy sources like flared methane, stranded geothermal energy, coal refuse, and even recycled waste tires. Hence, the narrative that Bitcoin mining is damaging to the environment may need to be relooked.
  3. The wasted energy from flaring in the U.S. alone is equal to 78% of the energy used by the global Bitcoin network in 2021. Repurposing flared energy towards Bitcoin mining would drastically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.
  4. Bitcoin mining can help strengthen renewable energy grids as renewable energy is unpredictable and results in excess energy during off-peak times that results in energy producers curtailing that energy. Miners can be a constant energy buyer of last resort, increasing profitability for renewable energy operations.

I really hate arguments started and framed by people coming from a place of bad faith, which is most critics of Bitcoin mining's ecological footprint. My general response to them is to point out how bombing people funded by money printing is significantly more harmful and that they should explain to me how Bitcoin defunding the war machine is bad. Then if they don't want to have a real conversation, I go on a tangent about how Bitcoin will eliminate banks and how much wasted energy is caused with all these skyscrapers full of bankers, laundering money for cartels and terrorist groups.
  1. E waste is a genuine concern, but shouldn't be a reason to condemn Bitcoin mining. It's a macro problem that creative people can solve. You could say public education is a travesty because of E waste from all those terrible Chrome books they're giving kids today.
I think it's fair to take fair criticism but the people who lob nonsensical arguments about nothing need to be mocked and exposed for who they are.

I'll keep that in mind. I think I need to convert some miners into stackers first for it to make sense
reply
I am interested, especially in home mining.
reply
Home mining is a lot of fun. Make sure to look at your electric bill to see what your costs look like. It may or may not be viable based on that.
reply
From purley that perspective it isn't, but I turn S9 on from time to time as an extra heat source during cold weather. Recently discovered it's noise also has benefits when your teenager daugther has a party with her friends in a different room in a flat, it supresses these screams etc. :)
reply
Definitely mining is integral to Bitcoin and if there's one specific addon to Bitcoin, it must be mining. My knowledge about mining is dwarf but I am willing to learn if it's presented with some simplified articles .
reply
I'd be interested. Mining is the part I find most fascinating about bitcoin.
reply
Why is that?
reply
Because of the tinkering. In particular the work to make finding the right solution more efficient and also because you get closer to the hardware of the computer, which I find interesting.
Not to mention it connects you to the source of bitcoins. If ever I get but one sat from mining, I’d think that would be super cool
reply
As a side note, you should look into OSMU and the bitaxe line of miners.
reply
I like the bitaxe. It's a cool project. I've talked with Skot who created that.
I wrote a little bit about trinket miners in a post I just did. It's a fun way to learn about the mining hardware side of things, but they are pretty expensive for what they are.
I really like though how it's all open sourced and could be a real way to develop more hardware for different applications outside of industrial scale mining.
reply
The Bitaxe Hex is going through finalization so should be done soon. ~2Th at 12V for about $300 (guessing a bit here from the last conversations I've read).
The bitaxe is also a great way to get into mining software as well. I've been running my own ckpool + bitcoind with my half dozen bitaxe ultras.
It also got me using testnet since I had to make sure my pool was configured properly.
I have been running lightning since the start, but the bitaxe finally made mining accessible to the plebs who don't have the capital to run a s19 etc.
Power is also a concern. I can be part of the mining network, as small as it may be, without ConEdison obliterating my wallet.
All in all, I feel like the utility of the bitaxe fundamentally undermines the label of 'trinket miner'.
reply
So I think in dollars per terahash and the numbers you just stated hurt me inside. I like the bitaxe as a project but that's expensive.
Today a S21 is selling for $23/th and a s9 which can run on 120v is selling for $7/th from kaboomracks with warranty and customer support.
That bitaxe is selling for $150/th
I'm not saying don't do it, but just know how much you're paying and what you're paying for before doing.
Older equipment is the way to go for people on a budget. Mining is not for everyone and not everyone needs to mine
reply
I can contribute with a few articles, guides and technical documentation to it 😜
reply
That would be great
reply
You can count on me 😜
reply
Yes but many people post about mining in Bitcoin so will it be differentiated enough to require a new territory?
reply
I will explore and experiment to determine. I think it will be more useful once this platform really blows up this bull market

I expressed interest in this just yesterday lol

I believe that Stacker News can benefit from diverse territories, providing a platform for people to discuss various topics based on their interests.
If you can afford it, it will be great.
reply
Yeah if I do it, I want to do it profitably

Hey Alex, I really enjoy mining content and would love to see more from you whether that’s in ~bitcoin or a mining territory. 🤙
reply
Awesome sounds great
reply
Were you managing Kaboomracks account on Nostr btw? Would be cool to see you over there too.
reply
Yeah I was. I could start posting there again
reply
If only there were a way to crosspost your SN posts to NOSTR...
(there is~~)
reply
I think I saw a tool somewhere once. Although it might come in handy in some instances, I prefer to do Nostr and SN separately. It’s a different vibe.
reply
LFG see you there.
reply
Definitely interested.
I own a bitaxe ultra and paid quite a bit premium to ship it here. Great little educational device, quiet and looks great on my shelf. Probably getting the bitaxe hex when it comes eventually.
S9 is just too big for my living space, and I don't really need a space heater that ideay kept on 24/7.
Would love to hear what others are doing for mining in limited space. Or just anything related.
Mining is more important than LN itself, definitely needs its own territory. It's core to the base layer and not that many useful articles on it.
reply
go for it, only one way to find out...
