A friend asked me which films capture the bitcoin ethos, and it got me thinking. Which films do you think display reasons why bitcoin exists, perhaps what we could accomplish with mass adoption of bitcoin, etc.
Obviously we have to stretch our imagination a bit for this, but I look forward to seeing what ideas members of the community. List as many as you like, and please include your reasoning!
Let me start off with the cypherpunk adjacent hollywood blockbuster, The Matrix. Waking up from the self-destructive chains of delusion seems so much like discovering the absurdity of money by FIAT. The system, by design, can print a seemingly infinite number of commands or dollars, but ultimately they cannot defeat the free-minded human being.
If you like, give me your own take on the Matrix! I came up with that a bit off the cuff.
  1. Fight Club
  2. Shashank redemption
  3. Pursuit of happiness
  4. The big short
  5. Office Space

On one hand I want to say: Matrix and Fight Club
On the other hand: F*ck everyone who says Matrix and Fight Club, you're not a special snowflake between NPCs
reply
All here should reasonably consider themselves snowflakes in a world of NPCs.

The bitcoin ethos is captured pretty effectively by the main characters clearly seeing what most can’t, even though it’s right in front of their faces. Plus, a lot of the issues (particularly the end where they realize the banks did this knowingly because they’re too big to fail) are still problems today.

Strange as it may sound, Wizard of Oz. There was a post here explaining it:
  • yellow brick road = gold
  • green goggles in the Emerald City = seeing dollars as something of value
  • the ventriloquist/balloonist = central bank
...and so on. Kind of a long shot though.

I would love to read more explanations of why people picked the films/movies they did as opposed to just a list, but I appreciate the contributions none the less.
