I don't think there's anything wrong on SN side. The author used non-standard ascii for the title, and those "related items" match perfectly. Moreover, there's no description, so it make it harder to relate items to something that (apart the video itself) has no contents/meaning.
reply
could be because of that non-standard ascii

SN design idea:
Destroy the notifications bell, or at least hide it from “Home Screen view” - or, give users the option whether it is there.
I think a lot about MySpace and the customized personal-public network of webpages a lot. While the theme of user customization is relevant, an underlying theme is only tangential:
There seems to be a chorus trying to encourage young people to learn how to code. I remember learning a modest amount of HTML/CSS to customize my MySpace page and the pride and excitement it gave me. Where do young people have that power - like a sandboxed, scalable power - to customize their online experience? No wonder too few people feel especially inspired to study programming and everyone is instead interested in becoming an influencer…our desires are heavily mediated by our options to express ourselves.
My own lament is I feel increasingly interested in making my own personal-public website but feel overwhelmed, frustrated and dissatisfied with the website builders available.
reply

Is this true? I feel like lots of people want to study programming.

Do you want to learn to program or learn to use website builders? While related, they’re very different. There are tons of no-code and low-code builders out there

I support having the option, but I do not want to lose the bell.

Discussion: How India's Economy Will Overtake the U.S.'s

China is poised to become the world’s largest economy between 2035 and 2040. But the next debate is over whether the Indian economy will also surpass the U.S.’s—and when?
reply
India is the economy to watch. China's rise, if it truly develops, will be short-lived, I think.

Quick question for the guru: I'm still using Mutiny for nostr zaps. I have to approve each zap in the "requests" tab. I swear that was turned off when I was using it a few weeks ago. Can you auto approve small zaps to make it less clunky?

I think yes and you can set a limit too. Is linked to NWC settings thing.

Okay. Thanks Edit: got it. Works perfectly. You go to requests tab, then edit the wallet connection and set a budget, then auto approve zaps within the budget (in case anyone else is wondering)

My daughter is getting all four of her wisdom teeth yanked today. Back when mine gave me problems they took out one at a time.
reply
I had all 4 wisdom teeth yanked on one visit. I was put on gas that knocked me out. When I came through, the dentist looked like he just spent a hard hour at the gym and said my wisdom teeth were unusually large and that they were difficult to remove. Next morning, my pillow was soaked in blood and my face had swollen to comical proportions. The swelling receded after about a week. Chances are that your daughter's experience will not be nearly as bad as mine.
reply
I don't think I'll share your experience with her!
reply
Lol. Wise move. My experience was probably the worst case scenario. I only realized how bad it was when other people were relating how they got their wisdom teeth removed and it was "no big deal".
reply
When my last one got removed my mouth was numb from novacaine while the surgeon was removing it. Before the procedure I had signed a waiver explaining that there was a slight chance my jaw would break. Now, as he's working and I'm numb I hear a very loud crack, then he yells "oh shit!" I was positive he had broken my jaw. He hadn't, but he broke the tooth next to my wisdom tooth.
reply
So much for my "worst case scenario" premise. Those are not the sounds you want to hear while under the knife...or the pipe wrench in your case apparently.
reply
You definitely don't want to hear your surgeon say "oh shit"

I've hyperdontia (having an extra teeth) in one side of my mouth. Initially, I had lot of problems (including severe pain) due to it. I went to a dentist who was also my class fellow from school. He recommended me to get rid of my extra tooth. But, I've listened so many stories from elderly people about weakening of eyesight after your teeth or tooth are taken out. I resisted the recommendation and looked for an alternative. It wasn't hard and soon I came up with a self prepared medicone.
You just need
  • 2 to 4 leaves of holy basil
  • 2 to 4 Apamarga leaves (prickly chaff flower)
  • One clove

chew them twice a day and let run on the pain area. You'll never need to visit a dentist.

I only use herbal tooth paste. In the morning I use toothbrush and before going to bed I massage my gums with finger.
My extra tooth has been there without any problem for more than 10 years now ..
reply
I took one out few years ago and no pain at all, or let's say I didn't feel much pain, yet I kept hearing all those scary stories saying how painful it is. 🤯
reply
Mine never hurt either. Yet those crazy stories are still out there. When the oral surgeon removed my last one, though, he broke the tooth next to it! That was a mess.
reply
Yet those crazy stories are still out there
not sure how many of these stories are real, and I don't understand why ppl share all these to make others scary, which is not really helping.
Even with my orthodontic,I didn't feel much pain too, life just goes on as usual.

Oh, I have had some real, genuine dental pain, but not from wisdom teeth. Once one of my teeth got knocked out during a touch football game, and the dentist started doing a root canal when the nerve was still alive! That pain was real.

I also had a really bad experience when I was a teen, and I think finding good dentist is the key!
I just told my dentists here that I will come to see you wherever you are as long as you are still being a dentist. 😂

Your bravery and determination to enter those territories, which are usually full of danger due to the tragedy and everything that happens in that event, is quite admirable. On the other hand, from a curious perspective, I suppose it was, is and should be fascinating to be able to appreciate the effect that arises from the force of nature and at the same time reminds us how fragile everyday life can be, and how everything can change in the blink of an eye.
reply
and this is part of the real world not really being shown much in the news.
You're right about it.
Those older buildings did not fall because of Seismic Isolation system. In old buildings (till 1900s probably) foundations are anchored to the ground by three layers of stones, where the deepest level consisted of small stones laid out relatively loosely. This layer absorbs the first surge of an earthquake’s devastation powers. On top of that is a layer of big fat even stones placed without any mortar, called Orthostats. And finally, it’s the base of the structure standing above the ground. This multi-layer foundation perfectly balances out the earthquakes’ forces while protecting the building above.
reply
I wonder when the buildings started to switch from building with rocks to bricks - I really like those stone houses, not only perfectly blend with nature, but also so earthy.
reply
Yes they were. Modern man is also very much incapable of affording such houses. Stone is much more expensive now. But then I look at some of the houses people build in the Himalyas with layers of wood and stones. Their structures easily withstand many earthquakes in the mountains.
These earthquake-resistant structures lack metal and mortar, allowing them to flex as needed during a tremor.
They are called 'Kath Kuni' in the Himalyas
reply
beautiful! the typical Ottoman houses are also built with wood and stone, which keeps cool in summer and warm in winter. 👀
reply
Actually, I've read it somewhere that this technique was brought up to the Himalyas from Istanbul in ottoman times when India and Turkiye used to have free trade by road..
reply
Great detailed explanation
reply
It's possible those older buildings were built on the most stable ground. There's a big difference in how much earthquake damage is done to buildings standing on bedrock vs those built on dirt.
reply
but the interesting thing is even within the same area, you might have a few still perfectly standing among the collapsed ones, I assumed it could be a. it depends on the bedrock b. it depends on how it is being built
reply
It certainly could be either. In the parts of America that have lots of earthquakes, buildings are designed to withstand them, but I can't speak to the situation in Turkey.
reply
buildings are designed to withstand them
that's what they said there too.
and shouldn't the home builders should go to study those holding up a 7.8 magnitude quake.
