In the US we see US at #1, based on total medals. Of course that way benefits the US.
In Bejing Olympics, US win more medal than China but not more Golds. US was 2nd and China was 1st. So, it benifits every country that win more gold.

Obviously the goal is gold but they give out 3 medals per event. Would you argue a country that had one gold medal and no other medals had a better Olympics than a country that had no golds but 5 silver and 5 bronze?

I don't agree it but it's not confusing. They should in fact change it and measure the table with a total number of medal tally.

Fair. It’s interesting because in the example I gave I would say the country with 10 medals had a better Olympics than the one with one but on the flip side if a country had 9 gold medals and no other medals and another country had 2 golds, 4 silver and 4 bronze. 9 golds is better. So that’s an argument for sorting it by gold.

Obviously, a gold is like 10 times more valuable than a silver so, I think it's okay to gove Gold an edge over silver and bronze.

Yes. They tried to convert to the metric system 50 years, but the people refused. I remember when teachers tried to teach us. We ignored them.

For me the US measurement system is really confusing! I also accept that this is largely due to we never learn it.

Yes, it does!
But, I feel that the imperial system is one of those things that distinguishes America from the rest of world. It's like sticking to one's traditions. We also use imperial system but in fragments. I've seen that in Indian villages, even at my village house, we still have old imperial weights. Also, while selling tobacco to merchants, we sell in imperial weights not in Kilograms or quintals.
