Howdy Stackers!!
Just bit of a medal tally update this time!
US was struggling to move up the table till yesterday but in just one day US has reached to the 2nd place in medal tally! I'm surprised and not surprised at the same time.

Medal Tally Yesterday

Medal Tally Today

How do you view this sudden jump by US?
Can China remain on top of the table or US will just move up and reclaim no. 1 spot which they have only lost to China in 2008 in this century?
Well, it was a good day for unexpected surprises (women's fencing, men's rowing), as well as areas the US has done well in (women's gymnastics, swimming). Sometimes it's a matter of what events take place when.
I've never understood why the only medal table options are gold or total medals. I'd love to see a combined version where gold is worth, say, five points, silver three, bronze 1. Still gives weight to gold, but also gives props to countries that score multiple medals in events.

Our pool is definitely that way. For a correct gold prediction, you get 3 points, for silver 2 and for bronze 1 point. So, we should be happy that at least we're doing it right way.
reply
In the US we see US at #1, based on total medals. Of course that way benefits the US.
reply
In Bejing Olympics, US win more medal than China but not more Golds. US was 2nd and China was 1st. So, it benifits every country that win more gold.
reply
100 vs 112, yet China was at 1st place. Good job!!
reply
I prefer the standings that way. It’s confusing this way.
reply
Nothing's confusing for me. Whoever wins more Gold is placed higher.
reply
Obviously the goal is gold but they give out 3 medals per event. Would you argue a country that had one gold medal and no other medals had a better Olympics than a country that had no golds but 5 silver and 5 bronze?
reply
I don't agree it but it's not confusing. They should in fact change it and measure the table with a total number of medal tally.
reply
Fair. It’s interesting because in the example I gave I would say the country with 10 medals had a better Olympics than the one with one but on the flip side if a country had 9 gold medals and no other medals and another country had 2 golds, 4 silver and 4 bronze. 9 golds is better. So that’s an argument for sorting it by gold.
reply
Obviously, a gold is like 10 times more valuable than a silver so, I think it's okay to gove Gold an edge over silver and bronze.
reply
I love Gold 🥇 but India haven't got any till now is really terrible!
That's interesting! In the US a lot of measurement is done differently. Right?
reply
Yes. They tried to convert to the metric system 50 years, but the people refused. I remember when teachers tried to teach us. We ignored them.
reply
For me the US measurement system is really confusing! I also accept that this is largely due to we never learn it.
reply
Objectively the metric system makes more sense.
reply
Yes, it does!
But, I feel that the imperial system is one of those things that distinguishes America from the rest of world. It's like sticking to one's traditions. We also use imperial system but in fragments. I've seen that in Indian villages, even at my village house, we still have old imperial weights. Also, while selling tobacco to merchants, we sell in imperial weights not in Kilograms or quintals.
