when i hear stories about the worst animal treatment, it tends to be from like rural asia or other generally poor countries.
in my case, i live in a village in Bulgaria and villages are just shit to animals in general, from leaving them on short chains all day, to old ladies poisoning cats with antifreeze, at that's just the start (i will say, by far the worst behavior is from gypsies, although the bulgarians are no angles ).
now, I'm from the UK and to me, and every European and Eastern European i have met have had a similar view point on animals and what is acceptable animal treatment etc
but the thing is, in the larger cities in Bulgaria, attitudes and better towards animals and it makes me wonder, are impoverished people so beaten down by life they simply have no compassion for animals?
maybe it's a lacking enlightenment thing? because in the UK, the people that are cruel to animals are just shit humans in general
what do you guys think? when i see kids with animals, they love them, it's like an inbuilt setting (apart from literal kids that grow up to be serial killers), so what has to happen in life to these people that they end up so cruel?
Have you looked into the animal abuses that take place regularly in places like the USA in factory farms? There is a reason they tend to have good security practices and an army of lobbyists. They need to ensure the undercover videos stop getting leaked of how they treat cows, chickens, pigs, etc... They also need the politicians in their back pocket to ensure no regulations can be passed/enforced so they can continue to squeeze out every penny of profit for their shareholders at the expense of the animals.
I liken it to how I see corruption in day to day life when visiting countries in south asia. Local bureaucrats and cops demand bribes regularly. In America, the bribery/corruption is only allowed at the highest levels (lobbying and the 2 tier justice system) so you don't see it daily. Therefore we think there is less corruption in America because its not in your face day to day.
Similarly, animal abuses in some of the places you mentioned may occur on the streets (very unfortunate). In places like America, they happen behind closed doors where the animals (slaves) are unseen until they show up in the supermarket.

Good point.

Precisely why I haven't eaten meat in a decade
reply
This is a really good point. Prevailing attitudes towards animals are no guarantee they'll be treated well.
The abuses in factory farms dwarf anything rural villagers could come up with, despite the fact that most Americans would describe themselves as "animal lovers".
reply
i think a lot of people are quite ignorant of the horrors there and, in this case, ignorance is bliss i suppose.
at least there are other organisations that will prosecute and punish animal abuse tho

Not at any appreciable scale. A random act of public animal abuse might be punished, but not the systematic abuse in factory farms.
reply
Poverty and evil are not direct. Being poorer does not make you more cruel. Although abuse in any of its forms is repugnant and despicable, when it is committed against animals or children it is worse, because they are defenseless creatures.
In general, people who are cruel to animals are even more cruel to other people or they may be very cowardly and abuse those who are less strong.
A phrase attributed to Victor Hugo is that "the miserable seek out other more miserable people to feel happy" , it is not from Lucy, the protagonist of Elfen Lied.
The worst thing is not that there are tons of cruelty, the worst thing is that the networks are full of these acts and EVEN WORSE IS THAT MANY TIMES THEY HAVE MORE VIEWS THAN ACTS OF KINDNESS. Humanity is becoming denaturalized

I believe in subsistence societies animals are either used as food or they are seen as competing for food. It's simple survival. There is also gratuitous cruelty, maybe fostered by someone's lot in life. The powerless exercising power over a creature lower on the power scale.
reply
This is what I was thinking and it's not just a human thing. There are so many videos of various animals befriending each other, when one would kill the other in the wild.
Having basic survival needs met allows the space for compassion and other noble instincts.
reply
Fortunately, there are people working hard to improve the situation for animals, and I hope this trend continues to grow! I firmly believe that education and exposure to new behavior models can make a significant difference. Unfortunately, in places where living conditions are tough, there is often a lack of empathy towards animals. It’s a shame, because every life deserves respect and care.
reply
the lack of empathy is a real thing so you see a lot of brutal treatment of kids and animals too, always the vulnerable
reply
Human beings have always demonstrated their inhumanity. The discouraging thing is that unfortunately this still happens today.

When we think about the plague epidemic in Europe in the Middle Ages, we can say that the main reason was the mass slaughter of cats. They were slaughtered all over Europe. It is clear that love for animals has nothing to do with nationality. I think the more you read, the more your inner vision develops. Reading develops not only the brain, but also the heart. Please look at the issue you are talking about from this point of view. Best

In this context it has to do with religion. Ancient egypt loved cats much. Christianity condemned the egypteean religion, so the cats.
Still Cyprus has more cats than people.

Many of these places see all manner of animals as food. In part, that's poverty, but in part, it's lack of taboo on the subject.

Great movie to watch is Earthlings (2005). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthlings_(film)
although giving up meat and abolishing animal slavery is unreasonable for many due to lack of education and responsibility (e.g. what out-of-the-ground growing things are edible and nutritious enough, how to properly train animals, etc.), we can make steps in the correct direction, so that perhaps one day we won't have to kill animals in order to eat well or put them on a leash and in a cage indefinitely.
disclaimer: since the cow and chicken are already dead, i eat their flesh and remember to be grateful for the sacrifice. i try to get raw milk from small local farms, eat more cheese and eggs. i also walk the friends' and neighbors' dog off leash whenever possible.
be the light thou wants to see in other people.

I'm convinced that how a society treats animals is a reflection of how the members of that society were treated as kids.

The reason why there is controversy over it is because it is popular and hasnt stopped.
