I had a harrowing experience today. My home computer, which hosts my attached wallet, failed because a Windows update was incompatible with my hard drive drivers. At the same time, I was on my work computer in a position to win a 3,000 bounty from today's Crossword Puzzle.
I couldn't post my answer for hours because I had zero sats in my SN wallet, and I was at work, unable to fix my home computer and fix my attached wallet. I couldn't post my Crossword Puzzle answer for hours!
Good thing when I got home and finally fixed everything, no one had posted the crossword answer yet :)
Still, this lesson taught me that self custody is still difficult and prone to failures. Some trust-based custodial solutions are still useful in small amounts to keep things running smoothly. So I'll be keeping some sats in my custodial SN wallet from now on, and when that option is removed I'll be holding some Cowboy Credits at all times, exactly for situations like this.
Also, FWIW, I can't believe Windows rolled out an update that literally caused me to BSOD on startup... due to a driver incompatibility.

still using windoze and blamin it on bitcoin, NGMI ;)
reply
I deserve that. Windows sucks.
In my defense, I am a gamer and still prefer having a Windows machine than not. I also run a command line only node on Linux; but I don't want to attach that one to SN.
reply
Keep separately games from bitcoin. Thank me later.

Did you try to disable your attached wallet and so you get a QR code you can pay with any lightning wallet?
Or was your home computer your only way to pay lightning invoices?
reply
I can only pay lightning invoices from my home computer. I don't have anything set up for that on either my phone or work computer
reply
There are many wrong things in this post...
  1. Why in the hell you still use a Windows OS, especially with Bitcoin ?
  2. Why you do not have multiple LN wallets, ready to use and rely ONLY on a single one?
  3. SN is a pay to post, not a pay to earn.

Fun fact: paying that bounty didn’t work with my attached wallet and I had to make and pay an invoice.
reply
I wonder why it might have failed. I think my wallet was working after posting the crossword answer.

After I posted this, I realized it was because I had insufficient funds in that wallet… I earned my first cowboy gun in my most irresponsible moment on sn. Haha

It's what it is. I don't want self custody for SN for the same reason.
reply
So how do you save it if that happens to you?
reply
Are we going to end up creating a shitcoin?

self custody is still difficult and prone to failures.
Here it seems that you had a hardware failure.
reply
Yes, though technically it was a software failure caused by a bad update. But these things happen and can throw a wrench in your self custody setup. To avoid this you need to build in redundancy. But all that is quite a lot to manage for one person, which is why self custody is difficult
reply
This I agree.

Are people selling sats for cowboy credits, or was "buying" a figure of speech?

DarthCoin wants to sell you his CCs for sats
reply
Maybe if he can offer a rate better than 1:1 he might have a market :)
reply
And what is wrong with that?
reply
incentives
I thought we would buy CC directly from SN
