pull down to refresh

It was yesterday's game between Tyson and Paul that has ignited (as I can see) a lot of interest for Boxing among the Stackers. While the match ended in Tyson (58) losing to much younger (27) Paul, I never thought Tyson had any chance against Paul. Yes, the argument of age difference can be put on the table but It should be reasonable to say Tyson would've met the same competition, had he been under 40.
You may backlash at me but I even don't put Tyson among the top 10 GOATs in Boxing. The reason for leaving him out from my list might surprise you but it's not based on futile reasoning. Tyson played most of his games in an era of boxing when most boxers were slower and Tyson could get over them pretty easily. I don't doubt Tyson for power but his speed is nowhere close to my top 10 GOATs in Boxing. Here's my list.
  • Muhammad Al
  • Joe Louis
  • Sugar Ray Robinson
  • Rocky Marciano
  • Floyd Mayweather Jr
  • Many Pacquiao
  • Jack Dampsey
  • Roberto Duran
  • Henry Armstrong
  • Willie Pep
I'm ready for the punches you guys now want to seal on me. ;)
But, I'll be waiting for your list and will be taking all of the TKOs amicably if you can reject this list and put why?
So, let's have a bout in celebration of Tyson's loss against a Youtuber.
🤜🤛
This is the correct list. How dare you leave Tyson? Ali Tyson Louis Robinson Marciano Dempsey Mayweather Duran Foreman Alvarez
reply
Because he thinks he doesn't deserve.
reply
How dare you leave Tyson?
As you dare include him.
reply
Just listing top ten. No particular order but Ali is 1.

The only person that I think could be over Ali is Jack Johnson aka the Galveston Giant. Not only did he like Ali break down barriers but he trail blazed.
reply
Tyson at no 7 can be justified but a lot of sites show him at no. 2, 3 and 4 and that's what I can't digest at all.
reply
This is in no particular order. I would probably rank him somewhere between 5-8
reply
That's alright.
Look at this list from bleacher report. It's also good but putting Ali behind Robinson. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/61177-greatest-ever-boxing-top-ten-boxers-of-all-time
reply
Good list but I don't think you can have anyone ahead of Ali. Louis vs Robinson for 2 is an interesting debate.
reply
I agree 💯.
reply
I always wonder would here be Tyson if he ever played against Ali? It's surprising people make comparison between Ali anc Tyson.

I think that wasn't a fight but an exhibition to make money.
reply
at an old age, the smart man would take the money, buy bitcoin, and not give a flying fuck about the youngster's claw to fame.
really, good health is much more valuable. glad to see that Tyson still has a few neuron cells left! perhaps he may even have been orange-pilled!
reply
Yes, Tyson is old, actually he is no longer a spectacle following matches at his current age, look, the numbers he gets are really far away.
reply
Spot on. It was an exhibition but it took away Tyson's reputation.

No Jack Johnson 🤔
I think boxing like MMA you can’t really group together heavy weights with Floyd or Manny just because the style and approach is so different
reply
Wow! I didn't look that far back in history. Certainly my bad I accept. He was a legend.

It’s only cause I’m from the Houston area and went to Galveston so much as a kid that I know about him! Certainly a key figure in American boxing history!
reply
Did you have a chance to meet him?
Jefferies and he played the match of the 20th century.
We should create a seperate list for before 1950s, I think. There were many greats from that era too. Jameson might be called the pioneer of black boxers as well.

No he died in 1946!

I thought you might be a very very old soul. ;)
The match I mentioned was done in 1910, I think so I know but because you want to Galveston, so you might have felt all the vibes that the legend left behind. He was culture and history of racism in the United States.
reply
I watched a lot of boxing. In his prime, Tyson was a force of nature.
reply
Did you watch Ali as well?
reply
Oh yeah. The first Frazier fight you couldn't watch live. There was round by round radio coverage. A week later the fight was broadcast in the US on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. I have to admit I was a Joe Frazier fan. It pissed me off when Hunter S Thompson described Frazier as a "human hamburger."
Ali was one of the first of what I would call "hot dogs" in sports. He was brash and braggy, and very funny. He used to talk about how ugly Frazier was.
reply
Thanks for this little history of boxing. I hope you won't mind me not picking your beautiful Frazier in my list.
reply
No. He probably doesn't belong. I think Tyson does, though. I like to imagine a fantasy fight between Ali and Tyson in his prime.
reply
Tyson played only against slow feets and hands, he was the best among the worst imo.
Why do you think Tyson should be in the list?
reply
What? Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes?

What about Jack Johnson? He’s really the forgotten Ali before Ali broke the barriers he did!
It really comes down to the same issue as in all sports -- comparing non-contemporaries just never really works. See all the Jordan/LeBron debates, or especially some of the comparisons in MLB and NFL that crop up.
(Don King also undermined the entire sport during Tyson's time, which doesn't help.)
reply
I'm not comparing non-contemporaries. I'm just asking your point of view on not giving a place among Top 10 greatest of all time in Boxing.
reply
Mike Tyson absolutely deserves a place in the top 10 but probably not top 5.
I also think Canelo should be on the list but maybe you want to wait until he retires.
reply
Canelo will get his place of he continues to do so like all of mine Top 10s did for decades, not for years.
Why you think Tyson deserves it?
reply
Tyson is probably the most powerful puncher of all time. He has 44 knockouts in his 50 wins. He was also lightning fast in his prime.
I don’t think he had the style and technique of most of the guys on your list but power is a part of boxing too so the most powerful puncher should be in the top 10.
reply
Have you heard about George Foreman and Earnie Shavers? They are much more powerful punchers than Tyson. But you see they haven't made it to the list. While Shvers wasn't good technically, Foreman could make it to the list had his fight against Ali went in his favour.
reply
I think there is an argument for Foreman being on the list as well.
I like this analysis on a comparison between Foreman and Tyson.
“Foreman is more heavy-handed, Tyson is more explosive. Foreman is more consistently strong with his punches but Tyson is able to generate harder punches as long as he’s not tired and his form is not compromised. In other words, Tyson's best punches hit harder than Foreman's best punches but Foreman's mediocre punches hit harder than Tyson's mediocre punches. Fighting Foreman would be like getting repeatedly hit by sledgehammers. Fighting Tyson would be like having dynamite explode in your face every now and then.”
reply
I think you have a good argument about Shavers being a more powerful puncher but he never won a title so he can’t be in the top 10.
reply
That's why he's not. Foreman isn't there as well but they both are more powerful a puncher than Tyson. Tyson can be at 11 but not in the Top 10, though I accept it's subjective and we may have differences. Will you please give me your list of top 10?
reply
Shavers can't be top 10 because he didn't win a title but Tyson held the title multiple times and so did Foreman. I would probably put both in the top 10.
Roy Jones Jr

It was a surprising fight, in truth sometimes youth is stronger than experience.
