The Top 10 GOATs in Boxing - Tyson don't deserve a place

It was yesterday's game between Tyson and Paul that has ignited (as I can see) a lot of interest for Boxing among the Stackers. While the match ended in Tyson (58) losing to much younger (27) Paul, I never thought Tyson had any chance against Paul. Yes, the argument of age difference can be put on the table but It should be reasonable to say Tyson would've met the same competition, had he been under 40.

You may backlash at me but I even don't put Tyson among the top 10 GOATs in Boxing. The reason for leaving him out from my list might surprise you but it's not based on futile reasoning. Tyson played most of his games in an era of boxing when most boxers were slower and Tyson could get over them pretty easily. I don't doubt Tyson for power but his speed is nowhere close to my top 10 GOATs in Boxing. Here's my list.

Joe Louis
Sugar Ray Robinson
Rocky Marciano
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Many Pacquiao
Jack Dampsey
Roberto Duran
Henry Armstrong
Willie Pep

The only person that I think could be over Ali is Jack Johnson aka the Galveston Giant. Not only did he like Ali break down barriers but he trail blazed.

It’s only cause I’m from the Houston area and went to Galveston so much as a kid that I know about him! Certainly a key figure in American boxing history!

Jefferies and he played the match of the 20th century.

We should create a seperate list for before 1950s, I think. There were many greats from that era too. Jameson might be called the pioneer of black boxers as well.

The match I mentioned was done in 1910, I think so I know but because you want to Galveston, so you might have felt all the vibes that the legend left behind. He was culture and history of racism in the United States.

Oh yeah. The first Frazier fight you couldn't watch live. There was round by round radio coverage. A week later the fight was broadcast in the US on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. I have to admit I was a Joe Frazier fan. It pissed me off when Hunter S Thompson described Frazier as a "human hamburger."

Ali was one of the first of what I would call "hot dogs" in sports. He was brash and braggy, and very funny. He used to talk about how ugly Frazier was.

It really comes down to the same issue as in all sports -- comparing non-contemporaries just never really works. See all the Jordan/LeBron debates, or especially some of the comparisons in MLB and NFL that crop up.

(Don King also undermined the entire sport during Tyson's time, which doesn't help.)

Mike Tyson absolutely deserves a place in the top 10 but probably not top 5.

I also think Canelo should be on the list but maybe you want to wait until he retires.

Tyson is probably the most powerful puncher of all time. He has 44 knockouts in his 50 wins. He was also lightning fast in his prime.

I don’t think he had the style and technique of most of the guys on your list but power is a part of boxing too so the most powerful puncher should be in the top 10.

Have you heard about George Foreman and Earnie Shavers? They are much more powerful punchers than Tyson. But you see they haven't made it to the list. While Shvers wasn't good technically, Foreman could make it to the list had his fight against Ali went in his favour.

I think there is an argument for Foreman being on the list as well.

I like this analysis on a comparison between Foreman and Tyson.

I think you have a good argument about Shavers being a more powerful puncher but he never won a title so he can’t be in the top 10.

That's why he's not. Foreman isn't there as well but they both are more powerful a puncher than Tyson. Tyson can be at 11 but not in the Top 10, though I accept it's subjective and we may have differences. Will you please give me your list of top 10?

Shavers can't be top 10 because he didn't win a title but Tyson held the title multiple times and so did Foreman. I would probably put both in the top 10.
