In most cases it's a complete waste of time and sats. When people get something like BTC as a gift, it mostly reinforces the idea that it's a game and some sort of token to play on the internet. You have to make an effort to get to it, you have to take the time to understand, and you have to let your ego behind and free yourself from bias, that's maybe the most difficult part. And all that has to be on your own, no one can go through that path but yourself.
When people come to me with real interest I always take the time and try to explain, share resources and help, but never gift. People know I'm into it, and I always tell them we can talk about it if they like, but most simply don't want to.
This will be my 4th year giving out sats. I only give bitcoin to people I know have expressed some interest, so I will only give to a handful. I don't get fancy. This will be the first year the people I'm gifting have finally moved their bitcoin off exchanges, so I will be sending bitcoin directly to their cold storage. No LN yet. They have never used it. Baby steps.
Gifting money is weird. Giftcards are a copout gift. Fiat money is a weird gift. Actual real money is a weird gift. If you care about your loved ones put some goddamn effort in and make a real gift or do nothing.
On the other hand it seems to be a successful method for orangepilling. I don't understand why but from hearsay it sounds like it's true
Just like the teacher @datrhcoin says, only very selective individuals
maybe my mother, my wife and daughters, and nobody else.
I don't know anyone who knows about the use of bitcoin, much less who deserve any of it...
About 5 years back, I had what I called a million Satoshi Christmas. I gave out million sats each to several people, all on paper wallets. I kept a copy of each as a backup. Everyone of them lost it and I ended up just claiming the sats back for myself since they didn't seem to care. 🤷♂️
That is so funny. And so perfectly illustrative of the uselessness or thrusting sats on people who aren't ready.
Sats come to people when they are ready to receive them, as Gigi says.
Not sooner.
Why people don't 'get' Bitcoin and care about it... is a complete mystery to me.
I understand if people haven't heard of it, or if there weren't resources available to use learning about it. But it's not like that anymore.
It seems like it would just 'click' with people especially the last few years.
On a deeper level, people will not resonate with it until they have completed a certain part of their healing journey. All the pieces of the puzzle can be present but without realizing some level of some self worth and self reflection, they just can't open up to new things, like abundance. That's how I see it anyways.
omfg. everyone?! i helped someone load sats onto a satscard from an exchange, and she lost it one week later. she found the card in another week, but damn, really!? it's disrespectful to my education efforts; i was very direct and straightforward.
maybe i still suck as a teacher.
maybe i suck at picking the students.
maybe i cud be funnier.
maybe i cud learn to gauge better whether the student is ready for more.
maybe i need a lot more knowledge.
one thing is for sure: i will not stop spreading the knowledge, in whatever way it takes. we are in a spiritual battle for all the marbles.
How?
First they must learn basic procedure to save the fucking seed or if is a LN gift, at least backup the access to that wallet.
Otherwise... nothing will get. I will not throw away sats on papers, opendime or whatever crap custodial LN wallet and then they forget how to access it or just throw it away.
Fuck 'em. If they want sats, must prove they worth it.
Opendime is cool, I like it. But for own personal use case.
Many times you end up gifting them to noobs and they throw it away. There's no way to recover those sats.
So if you use opendimes as gifts, choose wisely to who you give them and teach them clearly all the aspects.
I would prefer some LN vouchers printed from a LNbits.
So if they do not redeem them or lose the voucher, at least the sats are still in MY OWN node.
Right.
I get your style of thinking.
I will only give the opendime to people who have that kind of interest.
Its pretty unique.
Not everyone will appreciate its simplicity.
They are pretty expensive, though.
Especially once you add bitcoin to it to gift to someone.
No, I'm not going to give anyone sats, but I'm setting aside a portion of my sats for my nieces education. Her father (my brother in law) died of pancreatic cancer, leaving behind my sister and her daughter. I still have a few bull runs before she will be old enough to need it.
Most of the few opendimes that I have given out have been lost or not used. I agree with other posters- only give to those who have shown some interest. I do like the idea of sats cards. I am not sure the fate of the few of those that I have given. They are so cool but for the most part wasted on normies.
