such a question is an abstraction of responsibility. ask not "what shud be done about it?" but ask instead "what wud i do about it?"
myself, i pick my battles. someone who i think genuinely wants to do good but is obviously misguided, i shall engage with, and attempt to help them with an explanation or a tip, without investing too much energy.
i strive to be as reasonable as possible. sometimes i jump ahead and skip much of the argumentation, otherwise the post/comment gets too long - oh well, i don't always have the time to "show my work!" i read and listen to hundreds of hours of new material a month, and stay away from regurgitated topics; i want my stacker.news voice to be a strong espresso shot of what i have learned =)
the path of true knowledge is a very narrow path; people stray away from it all the time. staying on the path requires mental clarity and focus.
wasting efforts on the users who police the path, leave trash on the path, and tell others what the correct path is, is not helping elevate the stacker.news consciousness. getting personal with insults and obscenities doesn't work, because vengeance can last a while and doesn't help anyone.
be responsible, clean up the trash in ur feed (mute), downzap, ignore, and think whether a post adds any value to u before zapping.
lastly, strive to add royal value, like kings! we want stacker.news nation to win!
Thanks for posting this. This is how it should be done.
Some of the new stackers get offended and just feed the trollers or pretenders and fall victim to or victimise someone. But either way isn't correct.
The best solution is to keep providing value and ignore everything else.

it's a good idea to have a short post like this every so often, as more people sign up, similar to the telegram's repeating posts of "beware of scammers!" in support channels.

beware of scammers
Are there scammers on SN as well?

Yes, see #786630

oh wow, i skimmed over that one! what was the scammer's mother teaching him...
reply
no, that's a neat part of SN. SN parasites still hurt, but not in the monetary energy. i had a friend who called people like that "zompires" (zombie-vampires)
reply
These words or phrases, damn!
I'm not American nir English, so I enjoy them but I also feel that they may seem funny but they may hurt.
Because you also used the word parasites, can you precisely define who do you think is a parasite on SN?
reply
the fundamental definition is that the parasite cannot survive without a host. so for example, when i was posting mining rewards under a bot's mining rewards post in the saloon. i wondered if i am being parasitic, but the bot disappeared for a few days, and i kept posting in the saloon, getting some sats anyway.
parasitism goes deep - this is not only about sats, but about people's psychic energies being wasted on meaningless activities that do not add value.
"zompires" is a pretty fun term, i like it. shakespeare created many new words, why can't we use our imagination to make some too.
reply
Okay now I understand your Saloon posts haha
reply
Yeah, I too like the word, pretty good.
Bots are definitely the parasites but do you recognise some of the real stackers as parasites here?
reply
oh yea - i can feel it if the post makes me angry, and if most other posts by the user make me angry too.
funny story - someone nice i met away-from-keyboard (AFK) got onto stacker news, and before i knew his SN username, his posts triggered me. however, after i realized who the user is, my attitude shifted, and it took me a while to recognize that i should have trusted my first impression of the online persona.
online persona may vary significantly from from AFK personality.
It's a fine line to walk deciding who is a parasite. I really don't think we need to do anything except bring the value and be mindful of where we spend energy. The incentives here are solid and that's all that matters. It all works out in the end.

the daily grind on stacker news haha

What could be better? I love it here in the wild west. Hanging with all the trail blazers.
reply
I want to be able to paywall any given username.
If they spam me, I increase their fee to reply to me.
If they add value, I eliminate their fee to reply to me.
Pay to post is what allows stacker news to function just like paying a miner fee to add a tx to the blockchain is what allows Bitcoin function.
reply
this an excellent idea to raise or lower the paywall in order to engage with a particular user! like a price of a backstage pass, rather than whitelisting or blacklisting.
shud be easy to code this feature - lkewise, it should cost sats in order to be able to do that, because it's like asking for help from the stacker.news devs to keep the annoying users away from ur posts.

100 sats \ 1 reply \ @Jon_Hodl 1 Dec
Truth. I zapped it a bunch, bro.
reply
No need to throw with many sats on me just for that. The votes on SN works from 10 - 100 - 1000. So if you want to "vote" is enough even 10 sats. Now, if you really consider that I deserve those sats for the proposal, then is another story. and I appreciate the gesture.
reply
I'm trying my best not to reply a well known abuser here. And now I've really made my mind that he will never get what he wants from me. No matter how much he harrases me.
reply
ohh poor boy... your sats stash is getting lower, right? You can't post anymore your copy/paste shitGPT.

I commented on a post about censorship yesterday, the gist that I was thinking about is improvement of the "Downzap". Today it's effective in down ranking only the post or comment, but not really the user (but I could be incorrect) as they can just keep posting or commenting and receive zaps there. If you prevent from posting it's censorship, but what if enough unique users of an undetermined amount down zapped the offending user over a certain undetermined value each, then some sort of temporary penalty is invoked for like a week or something as a timeout. For example, you can't take their funds away, but you can either increase the cost for a certain amount of time or increase the % of zaps that go to the reward pool instead of the user for a period of time. Thus reducing the zap farming that many attempt by flooding the zone with posts and comments. This still allows the user to engage and discuss, and doesn't censor, but reduces the financial award if collectively enough people agree.
Edit: id love to know the logical issues with an approach like this, I'll admit I haven't thought very deeply about implications of consequences of doing something like this.

You are right, many times I have seen comments or posts that have no value and do not contribute any value to the platform. I think that SN is and should be an integrated platform where we can share and grow in all aspects.
