rewardsrewards

  1. Rewards are distributed to more than 100 stackers per day (like pre-march).
  2. Large zaps, even if late, are rewarded more. Early, large zaps are still the most "valuable" zaps but large, late ones weren't rewarded proportionally prior.
  3. Rewards are no longer dictated by a fixed distribution (like pre-march)

We'll probably continue to tweak rewards, including communicating the categories you're earning rewards in, but this is the start.

@rblb implemented nip-46 which allows you to login with nostr without an extension using apps like Nsec.app or nsecBunker.

This is more of a behind the scenes feature than anything, but this basically allows us to fail unresponsive wallets faster. (via @ek)

receiver fallbacksreceiver fallbacks

We didn't do a release announcement for this, but we previously shipped receiver fallbacks. Meaning, like with sender fallbacks, if you have multiple receiver wallets configured, we will try to pay each in priority order until one succeeds. (via @ek)

I'll pin a post today, but the more fyi's the better.

I'll pay out bounties for all the fixes in this release after posting this.

Since starting the Open Source Contributor Award Rules (OSCARs), we've paid a total of 13.9m sats to 39 contributors for 163 contributions! View an up to date list of contribution awards here: https://github.com/stackernews/stacker.news/blob/master/awards.csv

We are hiring.

I was going to ask if the changes to the algorithm were already in place, the leaderboard updated ahead of time! Well done, I think it's fairer. Good job sn team!

reply

That's the idea. I have a few more tweaks that occurred to me after these changes that I'll back test and deploy soon.

Nip46 works, awesome!

Very long in the making 👀

What constitutes a large zap? 1k or more?

Also can you elaborate on "rewards are no longer dictated by a fixed distribution".

reply

Large is relative. So, if a post/comment is good, and you zap more relative to others, you'll be rewarded more than others all things being equal.

Also can you elaborate on "rewards are no longer dictated by a fixed distribution".

For MSM, we gave each spot in The Rewarded 100 a fixed percentage of the rewards pool. Now, you're simply rewarded relative to other stackers that day, e.g. if you provide twice the "value," you're rewarded twice as much.

reply

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

like pre-march

Where can we get information how was it pre march? I don't know/remember how that was.

reply

It's just like I described: not limited to 100 and rewards aren't given on a fixed distribution.

@siggy47, can you satisfy my curiosity?
Are you the king of the hill on the leaderboard? 🤠

reply

Yes I can, and no I'm not. Some mystery guest has been atop the board lately, and it's not me.

reply

Thanks. I was betting it was you, but if you say no, I'll believe it.

reply

Sometimes it is. Lately two or three of us hidden accounts have been jockeying. Maybe this new system will improve things. I really think rewarding larger even if later zaps will improve things here.

SummarySummary

Stacker News recently improved its rewards system, distributing them to over 100 users daily, prioritizing larger and earlier zaps. They've also implemented NIP-46, enabling Nostr logins via apps like Nsec.app or nsecBunker without browser extensions. Wallet timeout issues during invoice creation/payment have been addressed for improved responsiveness. Receiver fallbacks were quietly added, allowing payments to multiple wallets sequentially until success. A non-custodial switch is planned for January 3rd. Finally, the platform highlights 13.9m sats paid to 39 contributors since implementing the Open Source Contributor Award Rules (OSCARs). They are also currently hiring.

Let's see how it works out in future but I'm already seeing some heavy cut in sats for lower ranks.

Yesterday I recieved 1483 sats onn rank 23 but today rank 23 is going to get half. And the real change is at the top that you made top heavy.

I don't know what you intend but the top is going to be fixed to those who can zap large. For zapping more, people really need to have surplus of Sats. What about people like me? I don't have much stack to zap large. But I used to zap and read top content daily.

I think small zappers are out of equation from rewards now.

reply

You can still earn with good content! Lots of people do well without zapping at all. Rsync is a great example.

I'm not saying it's perfect (also I need to nerf myself out of ranking high), but it isn't fair to generous people to reward people that aren't generous more than them. We all want the big zappers to continue to have more sats, because they'll actually spend them!

I like this and I think it’s fair this way.

I like how you keep us on our toes by making changes ever so often. It keeps SN fresh n forces us to adapt regularly!

reply

It is pleasant to see how the Platform continues to be continually updated. Everyone who does the hard work to make SN last and improve has my thanks👏
