pull down to refresh

I am almost through the first season of this new Paramount plus show Landman.
It was created by Taylor Sheridan (the guy behind the Yellowstone series). It stars Billy Bob Thorton and he is quite good in it.
There are two episodes left in the season that have yet to be released, which I did not realize when I started watching the show, but they are coming out the 5th and 12th.
The story is based in West Texas and surrounds the exploits of Landman (Billy Bob) who acts as a defacto operations manager for a mid-tier oil company.
I think it is a fun show, albeit a bit sensational. I hardly doubt a true oil company Landman's life and job is this filled with crisis and intrigue. But it is entertaining.
Is anyone else watching this show and if so what do you think?

I think this is what Siggy must have been referring to in his comment #832728

Yep. That was it.

We let our Paramount subscription lapse a while back, but next time we re-up (probably when Strange New Worlds comes back), we'll check this one out. Sheridan's a bit hit or miss for me -- never got into Yellowstone, but I really enjoyed the movie Wind River. Thornton's always good, though.

I have Apple TV back for one month because my kids wanted to watch Charlie Brown's Christmas. Any recommendations? I am definitely going to watch the second season of Silo but didn't really see much else of interest on there.

Have you watched Severance? I really enjoyed season 1, and the next season drops soon (though since it's weekly, not soon enough to binge). Slow Horses is a lot of fun, too -- largely inept spies often in over their heads (and a fantastic theme song). I also really liked Bad Monkey (with Vince Vaughn). My mom keeps telling me to watch The Morning Show, but I don't think it's my cup of tea.
(Also, I think they have a new Fraggle Rock show for your kids.)

I loved Fraggle Rock as a kid. We will have to check that out.
I will check out the other one's you recommended as well.

Where's Wanda?

I’ve heard good things but haven’t watched it yet. I am excited to check it out. Currently watching the Fargo series

8.3! not bad, added to my list to watch when it's finished! Aahhah

I haven't seen it, but I read about it. I don't remember where, but the review made the case that this show represents the beginning of media companies embracing narratives with a more right wing, conservative perspective. Examples included highlighting onerous government regulations and far left climate narratives. I'm going to check it out.

There is an element of that. Similar to how it was covered in Yellowstone but I think it is pretty measured and just reflective of the world these guys live in rather than being preachy. I can't stand when shows get left wing preachy so I wouldn't like it if it went the other way either.

I wouldn't want that either. Even handedness will stick out like a sore thumb nowadays. The point the reviewer was making was that there might be a viewer backlash against all the woke crap. Bottom line profits decision.
reply
I definitely think there is a backlash against being lectured instead of entertained. It had gotten so ridiculous. Trying to inject political views in everything.

We've been watching it too: #782343
It's probably my favorite series that's airing right now.
Taylor Sheridan has really been tapping into something recently. I've taken to thinking of it as Americana fiction. No one was really doing that before - making the "other half" of Americans heroes.
His background is pretty interesting too. He came to writing as a failed actor. He hasn't acted in Landman yet, but he plays the prize horse trainer in Yellowstone. (So sad the last half of the last season of Yellowstone blew up over Costner's conflicts making Horizon).

Didn't see this post.
Taylor Sheridan is on fire right now. I believe he also did Tulsa King which is a fun spin on a mafia guy coming to Oklahoma. Sylvester Stallone is in that one.
I do think he is tapping into something showcasing parts of the country and characters Hollywood wouldn't typically portray.

Who shot J.R. Ewing?

Billy Bob is fantastic in that role, pretty good show anyway showing hard life of Texas roughnecks and true picture of the oil industry. I'm not in the business, so can't vouch for accuracy but it doesn't seem far fetched from possibility.... if you looking for something to watch you wont be disappointed, Good call @grayruby
