Hear me out.
I'm not dissing anyone, least of all SN. @ek 👀
I just finished muting a lot of territories just to see how it changed what was fed to me on the hot, top, and recent. And the thought crossed my mind, "how much of this is just really really bad or worthless content?" -- Subjective I know!
I don't have an answer to that question, and I'm relatively new here, so I thought maybe it could be a launching point for discourse about the current state of SN and what's being posted here.
This was recommended as similar if you want to check it out by @Scoresby

Regardless of what bad content is, content won’t improve until we start working on growth again.

just need to have broader parameters used for ranking posts

What does that mean "working on growth?"
Attracting new users?

Yep!

Fair enough, is there any public data for this? You're just relying on the incentives within SN? Are they being refined? How so? Any big changes that happened that I missed that have IMPROVED this element--growth--of SN?

How do you define sat farming garbage?
reply
Good question!
Probably up for debate. Me personally, I'd say it's something posted to farm sats that doesn't have value.
And the moment I write that I dig myself a hole, because as I think of examples, I realize that even if it is JUST an AI prepared summary of a video or article, someone might ACTUALLY get benefit from consuming it...
I suppose it's easier to say what IS NOT and CANNOT be sat farming garbage, which is something that took real time and energy and care to prepare. Or as @DarthCoin likes to say, PoW posts...

Search my old posts about some assmilkers on SN. Now is better but just few months ago was a nightmare.
I still stand my ground with my proposals I did in the past:
  • remove leaderboard and daily rewards.
  • separate upvotes (CCs) from zaps (sats)
  • separate ranking earned in a territory from the rest.
reply
wait, upvote? What's that? Oh, you mean, create the distinction, yet it's not distinct yet

The best example for your question is in the comment made on your tutorial about GrapheneOS: #884967 he never contribute with something useful, just rambling around and assmilking, gambling, betting, posting mostly garbage (also with his sockpuppet accounts).
That assmilker is using multiple sockpuppet accounts on SN. He's a deranged shitcoiner (see examples on his bio #788785).
Like you said, it must be some PoW not just posting bullshit links and shitGPT text just to grab some sats. Your guides for example, we all can see that you work on them and you know what are you talking about. Even that I do not agree with your position about monero, your guides are good and I appreciate them.

Thanks I actually appreciate that

I already told DarthCoin that when SN started, we did distinguish sats and upvotes and it sucked. It looked like this:
5 votes \ 10 sats \ 3 comments
Only the first sat was an upvote and the rest were just appreciation (just like DarthCoin explains his proposal now). Then we realized it's actually very good for ranking if someone can pay more if they find something more valuable and that this distinction is confusing for stackers so we got rid of it.
I don't know how exactly DarthCoin imagines his proposal will look like in the UI, but if it's anything like the separate buttons for likes and zaps on nostr, I suspect it's going to be just as bad.
Btw, DarthCoin should know this, he has been here since #166.

the idea seems good to me and you prevent this type of "sat-hunting" content, raising it to the top for votes and the Sats are like a tip from those who appreciated it even if they don't vote for it to be highlighted.
I know and was a good visual in the beginning. And now are even better to be distinguished upvotes from sats because we have CCs. Who wants to upvote with more ranking points then could use more CCs. Nothing wrong with that.
I want the separation to show clearly the "appreciation" in sats and the ranks from upvoting. That will give a clearer view of what is going on.
Example:
  • I read a post and I like a lot the PoW the OP did on it. But is not worth upvoting a lot to be pushed on top. But worth more sats from me, because I want to give him those sats.
  • I read a post and is very important for the community, so I will push more upvotes (CCs) and just few sats...
I hope you get my point now.
Even this post of you, I don't know now how I can do it, sats or upvotes ?
some articles I see really seem to be just words thrown around and organized into rambling by AI. I don't think it's possible to measure this in numbers nor whether it's really necessary. Let users regulate this with their Sats, bad content will die with little return and its creators lose incentive.

It's a high enough percentage that I suspect anyone who really enjoys SN is doing what you (and I) do and trying to control their feeds with mutes, subscriptions, etc.
That said, it's all a feeling and anecdata (for me, at least), and I'm not sure if the number is as high as my gut tells me.
(Also, of course, there's a chunk of SN that is not sat-farming, and might not even be garbage, but just are not for me, and both kinds of posts trigger the same "noise, not signal" reaction in me.)

I just finished my Bitcoin Beginners newsletter. I was surprised at how many really good posts the territory got this week, including one from the OP. Then I checked out overall top posts of the week for SN. I suggest everyone do this today. Lots of quality content.

All of it. At least until the great nerfening of January 3rd 2025.
Now it's compliance credit farming.

This is a fairly complicated issue, because although there is a lot of SN value, it is true that you also usually find empty content or garbage of people who only look for some Sats without even thinking a little.
When I learned of SN a while ago, I thought it would be a place to win Sats. Then I learned that it was not so, Decubri was a place to learn and where to connect with other minds, and additionally, if my content contributed some value to others, I possibly receive a value. And another main aspect that I liked of SN was the "pay to talk" model that led me to think that there was a lot of value content here to continue learned about Bitcoin.

Not sure what are thee parameters to have a post going to the top/hot, hope are not only zap/dowzaps. Would be interesting to have, for example, post-views, and time-spent-reading-post to be considered for the ranking: so when posts get zaps and views, it will rank higher than one that get just zaps.
