Email isn't private.
Gmail/Outlook exist to monetize communication, not protect it. Proton uses PGP between users; Tuta uses quantum encryption for contacts, calendar, and archived emails and allows users to password-protect emails. Both fail when emailing non-users – messages get decrypted and stored indefinitely.
Your email address is a tracking ID. Reuse it, and attackers build your profile. The solution: every account gets its own email address. Disposable aliases work, but custom domains (e.g., you@yourdomain.io) are better: create yourbank@..., yoursocialmedia@..., and disable compromised or frequently spammed addresses instantly.
One side benefit of the method below is that you can avoid the normal spam box hell that occurs when emails accumulate from entities that do not include an "unsubscribe" url at the bottom of the email. Banks seem to have this problem the most. My doxxed email address still gets emails from old bank accounts that are impossible to unsubscribe from.

How-to

1. Myprivatenym.io: acquire domain

Go to myprivatenym.io and get a domain.

2. Go to proxysto.re

3. Tuta: acquire an email address

  • Go to Tuta and sign up for a free email.

4. addy.io

Information can be found here, but is summarized below
  1. Sign up for addy.io using your Tuta email
  2. Redeem your gift card and upgrade to Lite.
  3. Go to "Domains" > "Add New Domain"
  4. Paste your Myprivatenym.io domain (e.g., janesmith@privatedomain.io)
  5. Go to the "DNS Management" in Mynymbox.
  6. Back in addy.io, click "Verify Domain" - takes 2-15 minutes. It will look like this in addy.io ⤵️
  7. Then add these four records from addy.io into the Mynymbox DNS manager:
  • You can check the records for your domain using mxtoolbox.com
  • NOTE: DO NOT MARK EMAILS AS SPAM, BUT RATHER DELETE OR DEACTIVATE THE ALIAS!
Can I mark emails forwarded to me by addy.io as spam?
No, you must not mark messages forwarded to you by addy.io as spam as this can damage the reputation of the mail servers and is against the terms and conditions.
If an alias is receiving spam messages then please deactivate it or delete it.
addy.io is signed up to multiple feedback loops (FBLs) that trigger a notification when any messages are marked as spam. Repeatedly marking messages as spam will result in your account being disabled.

Here is what my addy.io dashboard looks like after a few years of use. My spam box is EMPTY.

Regarding growth, @k00b nobsbitcoin linked to my email guide. I thought it was to my blog which I've fixed a few errors that people mentioned here. Actuaaaaally they linked to this SN post! Also cool! Glad to (maybe) bring people to SN

Apple offers a similar feature with iCloud+ through 'Hide My Email', allowing you to generate unique email addresses for added privacy. Otherwise, they offer up to 3 free aliases with a regular iCloud account.

I find it less than elegant. The email addresses they give aren't exactly aesthetically pleasing. I prefer my set-up. Plus I don't want to rely on Apple... I'm not always using an Apple device. I need more control.
reply
I see your point, but for a basic user, it's affordable and secure! I believe Apple is at least a step ahead of Google when it comes to privacy.
reply
One problem. It assumes you're using an Apple product... That's unacceptable for me. But definitely fair to point out that it exists.

Apple product... That's unacceptable
damn right, who is still using Apple in 2025 is a brain dead.
reply
lol "icloud" is a privacy tool. Are you serious?
reply
It’s not about Apple’s privacy, but about creating a unique email for each site or app. That’s the point.
reply
Correct actually... Email isn't really a private thing... The main benefit is having a unique email for each account such that you can disable at will. So I'd call it more a security thing than privacy. Security in that if an attacker attempts to create a dossier on you, it's harder for them since they'll not be able to use your email and password from one place (attained by purchasing from dark net) and using it somewhere else, like your bank account, assuming you still use those fiat institutions. I personally just wouldn't want to use Apple for this... I find their UX to be sub-optimal and requires you to use Apple universally. A major flaw.
reply
Exactly, it's more about security and making it harder for attackers to link your accounts. I get your point about Apple, though. I have to admit that being tied to their products can be a limitation.

run your own domain, self-hosted, with your own email server and you will get infinite aliases as you like.
reply
I don't think we were talking about self-hosting here, but rather services that let you avoid giving out the same email to everyone. Besides, managing an email server isn't something everyone can handle.
