@ek your well intentioned effort to drive engagement on SN has gotten out of control. My notifications have become completely inundated by utter nonsense one word, one character comments. It is all spam now. This is not improving the SN experience, it is ruining it.
I applaud your efforts in running this contest. I think next time if we do something similar the parameters for what will be accepted as a legitimate comment should be stricter.
Can you mute the thread? Does that clean up your notifications?
reply
Oh I guess you can’t mute posts. But you can unsubscribe from threads

No you can't mute posts. How do I unsub to a thread?

Ok. I see. I am not subscribed though. I am just getting notifications because I was involved in the thread at some point so it notifies me everything that is said after that point.
reply
Yea, but you can unsubscribe from those sub-threads. It’s cumbersome though
It's true. I've been posting some longer comments but the replies were all spammy.
He can change the parameters for this one as well. Just need to set that unworthy one word comments will disqualify the participant.
reply
Or may be some penalty like when someone spams the comments for the first time, he'll get a minus, for the second time a bigger minus and for the third time all his previous comments become void.

Hard to police I guess. His script can count comments but it can't determine whether they are legitimate or not.
reply
Yes, hard to police. However I don't think anyone would try to spam if there's a "Rule of Disqualification".

I don't know if he wants to do it at this point since they have been allowed for two days now. I don't mind this idea but probably the contest probably shouldn't have been a week and should have discouraged spam. It's fun but the point is try and make SN better not have everyone's notifications filled with nonsense so they can't even see legitimate posts and comments. I zapped a couple of your posts from earlier today that came into my notifications but I wouldn't have even noticed them if I didn't scroll down all the way to the rewards notifications to make sure I didn't miss anything. Must have been 100 comments, almost all garbage.
reply
I agree. Two of my posts yesterday went unnoticed and I blame the spam comments on this post.
One of the two was about a Bitcoin course. I'm pretty sure that stackers have interest in such a news. But it was buried, not a single zap!!

At the very least, it's a pretty neat social experiment. But if the single word spam gets too bad, I'll probably tap out.

Agreed. I think it was a good idea. Should have just been shorter and have some clearer rules to at least try to preserve the intent of the thing.

You are right and I’m sorry but I will fix the notification spam this week if not today, see #951622
