pull down to refresh

A lot of typing has been done comparing various right wing figures and people like Donald Trump and Elon Mush to Fascism and Nazism. It is frankly pretty absurd at this point. I'd be with them if they were just talking about these people being authoritarians. They clearly are in many ways. I'm not a fan.
But very little is said in a "non-partisan" way about the left. This is gonna be short and is meant to peak your curiosity to go and do some research for yourself.
The economist Milton Friedman famously said.
"After the fall of communism, everybody in the world agreed that socialism was a failure. Everybody in the world, more or less, agreed that capitalism was a success. And every capitalist country in the world apparently deduced from that what the West needed was more socialism."
This was said a long time ago and it is still the case. People espouse socialist ideas without even a concern about being called out for it. The same is NOT true of fascism or even traditional American patriotism.
But many of you may not realize just how deep the rot of socialism goes. Most people agree that the USSR committed terrible acts and was a failure. Before the creation of the USSR two socialists movements fought for power and control, the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks. The primary difference between the two groups was how to bring about socialism. The Bolsheviks led by Lenin favored a more radical revolutionary force led by a small group. The Mensheviks, led by Julius Martov, preferred a larger, more democratic rise to power. They supported a more gradual rise of socialism. In October of 1917 the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in a bloody revolution.
Even to this day there are two different minds around how to bring about socialism. In the US the Menshevik approach is the one more popular. People like Bernie and AOC are this type of socialist. But make no mistake. They want to bring about a socialist utopian society. The type of system we have seen fail time and time again.
A few years ago I heard about another socialist movement and was frankly shocked that I had never heard about it before. In 1890 Britain a group of socialists formed an organization called the Fabian Society. The Fabians were/are socialists. But they believe in gradual incrementalism to bring about socialism. So what did the do you ask? They were at the center of the founding of the Labour party in the UK. Now, you might say. Big deal. But here's the weird thing. The Fabian Society's coat of arms was literally a wolf in sheep's clothing
They sought to bring about socialism covertly through democratic processes by presenting themselves as more moderate politicians. They have worked for decades to bring about socialism in the UK. If you don't count Margret Thatcher's era they've done a pretty great job. The UK is a mess.
So what does this have to do with May Day or Labor day for that matter? Well, socialists are at the center of every labor movement and celebrations like May day. Socialist ideas have been pumped into the government textbooks in the US for decades. Teachers are instructed in Universities full of believers in this wolf in sheep's clothing movement of democratic socialism.
Socialism leads to death and poverty. I'm not here to say that the US economy is the example for what the world should do. I'm a free market guy. We live in a corporatism led economy where the state partners with corporations to screw many in the US as well as the world. But I can tell you this. Socialism would be even worse.
The famous and infamous Russian anarchist Emma Goldman upon returning from her visit to the USSR was broken hearted. She had been a supporter of the revolution, but when she saw it with her own eyes she had a change of heart.
The compassion that seems to be a part of socialism is a lie. You can't institutionalize compassion. It has to come from the people, not a system. We should care for our brothers and sisters. But WE have to do it. We can't take from one group and give to another. We can't surrender our liberties to those that say they will take care of it for us. We have to do it. Capitalism is amoral. The free market is amoral. Both require us to be moral and show the way.
I hope this sparks your interest into looking into the history around socialist movements across the globe. I don't doubt that some have good motives, but the results are disastrous for the masses.

These days, socialists are seen as defenders and bearers of all virtues — almost like saints. I live in a country that’s socialist to the very edge of what could be called communist, although I already consider it as such. What I see is victimhood being rewarded and reinforced by politicians and the so-called defenders of those virtues.
Criminals, freeloaders, and illiterate people are rewarded with money stolen from all “citizens.” The constitution itself is a crime against any free individual.
Strangely enough, many people here do run their own businesses and hate taxes. But they’re tied to a system that claims to protect them while it robs them. It’s nearly impossible to have a productive conversation with anyone here about ending the state or achieving sovereignty — it almost feels like you’re saying something illegal.
And so I carry on, stacking my humble sats and planning a sovereign life a few years from now — doing everything I can to loosen the grip of the state.

Is profit sharing socialist?
In the early 1980s I worked for what ended up being a highly successful restauraneur (Italian) and Subway franchise owner who shared profits with employees based on the store's gross sales, considering food costs. Anyhow for a minimum wage worker at $3.35, for every $1000 the store made over $10k in a week he gave us another quarter an hour. So every employee was a sales rep, service rep., cost monitor, and sales coach to each other. It was awesome. There were weeks I made $5/hr and got overtime, so it could be highly motivating for the time.
I've seen nothing like that since. In fact he stopped the practice by the 90s. I knew because by then I'd been at GM a few years and was talking to him about partnership on a store. You don't really hear of profit sharing on that level these days. Although some get nice options packages, it ain't the lower end.
So, is it socialism?
reply
If the sharing is based on CONSENT and a contract, then no, is not socialism (call it communism). If a profit is taken by force or coercion, then is communism. Sharing profits with consent is voluntarysm.

CONSENT
Yes!

I don't even have a problem with workers uniting and forming a group to collectively negotiate. The issue is when the state gets involved really. As long as its voluntary its fine.
Here's the eye opening thing. Socialist reject voluntarism. They want to force everyone to live under their rules. There is nothing stopping people from creating their own voluntary socialist societies within the US or other countries. I have no issue with this. I would never live in one but it has been done and can be done.
I think this is the way forward. Voluntarism. The thing is, the free market will win. Free trade and exchange will destroy any socialist system. The only way socialism wins is it uses violent force. And by win, I don't mean works. It doesn't work. Its like poison.
The US and other western nations take a little poison (socialism) and because they have so many wealthy productive people the poison doesn't kill the system fully. But if we were to remove all of the poison how much stronger could we be?
Of course we do need charity, good will, and morals. The problem is socialism seeks to provide that and it can't. You need faith traditions and kinship of man to do this. You need a culture that cares for each other. You can't make that a state system. It will destroy itself.

uniting and forming a group to collectively negotiate
I wouldn't join one though. I'd rather do my own negotiating. I've worked in union jobs over the years and I can tell you it is better for slackers than it is those that are motivated.

@Car, thought of you as I was writing this. Maybe a year ago you were talking about there being communists in the US pushing things in certain directions. You are correct. Its been going on for a very long time. They are just usually in hiding about it.

Really describes the reality we find ourselves in as Americans, its time to own the mess we've made and not lie to ourselves anymore. Our future depends on it.

The communism NEVER fall... it just evolve in more sinister forms... and sadly even people from so called "capitalist" places are embracing it. Wherever a government exist and interfere into people's life and more important giving them subsidies and funds, there's communism.
So let's say it clearly: all around the world there's no capitalism, but just another sinister form of communism disguised in a fancy pig with lipstick. Real capitalism is when a government do not exist or have no influence at all.
Yuri Bezmenov was right...
