It's a weekend for the stars in the sports world with the NHL all star game and the Pro Bowl both happening this weekend.

I am not particularly interested in either game but I do like a good skills competition so I might tune in for some of the NHL skills competition. The NFL seems to have split their skills competition between Thursday (yesterday) and Sunday so unlikely I will catch any of that since I missed the first half. 

I am a bit old school when it comes to skills competitions. Give me fastest skater, hardest shot in NHL. 3 point and dunk contest and NBA. QB accuracy in NFL  and my personal favourite the Home Run Derby in MLB. But the leagues are always trying to come up with novel ways to get fans interested in these events. Although it was a bit corny, I did really enjoy the NHL skills competition from a couple years ago in Vegas where they made many of the events vegas themed. 

Shill me what events you like and dislike surrounding the various all star games (doesn't have to be limited to the skills competition- could be rookie games, legends games, celebrity games etc). 

Odd to not have a Friday without a pick 'em to do. Happy Friday regardless.

Ok, we won't get into that debate again but it's the first thing that came to mind when I typed day 23. 

There were a handful of NBA games last night. I did watch some of the Clippers v.s Hornets. How is it that the Clippers have Leonard, George, Harden and Westbrook all on the same team and they aren't the best team in the league. Guys not named Lebron get old quick in the NBA these days. I was somewhat disappointed I missed the TWolves v.s Thunder game, as those are the two teams I am most fascinated by this season. Besides being fascinated by what the Raptors will do to reshape the team at the deadline. 

The Jays re-signed CF defensive god Kevin Kiermaier. Great but the team can't hit. 

The World Junior Hockey tournament started yesterday and no surprise all the usual suspects- Canada, US and Sweden won their first games. I haven't watched any of the tournament yet but Canada plays this afternoon so I will probably try to catch a bit of that game. 

I learned yesterday that there is a professional women's hockey league starting up soon with six teams. Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, New York, Boston, Minnesota. They are playing at a small college venue in Toronto but apparently have sold out their season tickets. I wonder if this league eventually gets integrated with the NHL and we essentially get a WNHL. 

I can't keep track of all these college bowl games. I am just going to continue to ignore them until the big ones that are part of our Bowl pick 'em.

Fun weekend of sports. 

The NBA in-season tournament championship game was good, even though the outcome never seemed in doubt despite the Pacers consistently hanging around. 

Some good NFL games yesterday with a couple of upsets mixed in. Nice win for the Bills. Mahomes is way too talented and has been way too successful (not to mention the Chiefs afforded a lot of huge calls) to be whining about his player being called for a blatant offside. Bad look. The Chiefs are reeling and the Eagles are reeling but still four games to sort themselves out before the playoffs. How are you guys feeling about the MVP race? Currently it seems like Dak and Brock are neck and neck. Too bad it's a QB only award now because I think CMC and Tyreek Hill deserve some consideration. 

700M for Ohtani. He ended up where everyone initially expected but they extracted maximum value by playing the Blue Jays as pawns. Jays fans reeling worse than Eagles fans right now. 

Two Monday night football games tonight. I will jump on sometime during the game if anyone is around. Payout of the weekly pick 'em after the games. 

@siggy47 will be live on location tonight to witness the Islanders crush the fraud Maple Leafs. We are with you Siggy, we are all Isles fans tonight. May your Tavares and Maple Leafs hate fuel your team to victory.

The Saints didn't give the Rams as much of a game as I thought they might. Overall it wasn't a bad game but other than a small surge late by the Saints it never really was in doubt. Rams are hot right now, I think they get into the playoffs and maybe make some noise. I still think their D, especially the secondary, is a big question but they could be a tough out. 

It seems like the Dodgers want to own Japan. First 700M for Ohtani and now 325M for Yamamoto. The guy looks great but that's a lot of money and term for a pitcher, especially one who hasn't thrown a pitch in MLB. Maybe now that the Dodgers have completed their Christmas shopping some other teams can something. 

How about those Buffalo Sabres? Laying a 9-3 beating on the Toronto Maple Leafs. It's times like these I am reminded of the joy I used to get from the game of hockey. Strut your stuff @BlokchainB

Need some of our NBA fans to weigh in on the Pistons. Are they really the worst team of all time? I don't want to blame all this on Monty Williams but 13M for a coach of a 2-26 team.

Quiet week with no NBA games until Thursday. 

Meanwhile in the NHL, apparently the Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks were playing D like they were in the NBA all star game. 10-7 Wild. A lot of high scoring games in the NHL lately. I am not sure what to attribute to the scoring outburst, maybe just the time of season. 

Speaking of NHL. I will be rolling out the NHL Trade contest likely tomorrow. A bit short on time today as my wife and son are travelling to Texas and I need to get them to the airport this afternoon. But I will post it tomorrow. 

I also want to coordinate something for March Madness so any ideas would be helpful. I don't want to do a traditional bracket, It's too many games to pick and manage. We could devise some sort of survivor pool or I could just do a pick 'em for each round or maybe both. Please share your ideas.

An entertaining weekend of sports with the NBA all star festivities, UFC and a couple stadium series NHL games. The NBA all star game was the worst of the bunch to be sure. 

Congrats to @Kaffi and @Undisciplined for both winning the UFC 298 pick 'em. I did not have a contingency for a tie after the tiebreaker so I just paid both 2000 sats. Thankfully it was only 2, we were very close to having a 3 way tie. Kaffi has yet to lose a UFC pick 'em yet. I am hesitant to call it a 3peat since we essentially ended in a draw but definitely an undefeated streak. 

I would still like to do something similar to the NBA trade contest but with the NHL trade deadline. I will post something this week. 

If you watched any of the all star festivities on Friday and Saturday night you will have noticed the use of an LED court. Personally, I thought it was pretty cool for the events but I didn't like game action on it. Seemed like a far too real video game. The NBA also announced NBAI which seems to be some generative AI platform for basketball viewership. They did not do a very good job of explaining what it will be used for, just showed NBA highlights in spiderman style. It appears the NBA is really making a push to be the league at the forefront of the digital age and attract the tik tok generation viewers. Seems all a bit gimmicky to me but I am getting old.

Spring Training games start Thursday. I can't wait. I am sure I will be bored of ST games after about a week but it will be nice to have baseball back.

Shout out to @siggy47's Islanders for defeating the Maple Leafs in OT yesterday. Sorry @kr but Siggy is 2-0 against you this season. 

Last night was a night of lopsided victories in the NBA. Suns beat the Lakers by 18. Bucks beat the Celtics by 33 (and it was worse than that for awhile) and the Thunder beat the Blazers by a score of, wait for it, 139-77. A 62 point margin, which was the 5th worst beat down in NBA history. As you may know, Chet + SGA is one of my fascinations in the NBA this season but this team is more than just two good young players. They are playing some unbelievable ball. Is OKC a real contender? 

We had good response to the NFL playoff bracket challenge. I will be posting the first Playoff pick 'em for the wild card round shortly. 

Thanks to everyone who participated in our music x sports crosspost yesterday. I know if wasn't the most cleanly executed thing but we are throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. More to come from the Arena Anthem series in the future.

It looks like one of the fights for the UFC pick 'em has been cancelled. Thanks @BTC_Bellzer for the heads up. We will go forward with just the four other fights and the tiebreaker. 

Have any of you seen the Bye Bye Barry documentary on Amazon prime? It's the story of Barry Sanders and focusing in on his decision to retire while still in the prime of his career. The documentary is pretty good but what I enjoyed most was the sprinkling of great highlights throughout. After so many years you forget how incredibly elusive he was, making 4 of 5 guys miss on what looks like a broken play and suddenly he just ran for 30 yards. 

It's a bit of a shame what has happened to the running back position in the NFL. 

The more news that comes out regarding Ohtani's contract the more I am baffled by it. Apparently it has a provision that if either the Dodgers GM or principal owner leave the team during the contract term Ohtani can opt out. Very odd provision, amongst all the other odd provisions but I guess a highly unique contract is fitting for a highly unique player. It's a sad state of affairs that the free agent/trade market is so quiet that the baseball world is resigned to discussing contract provisions. Do something GMs. 

Raptors won last night. First time in awhile. Maybe this will spur their big turnaround. Some interesting trade talk yesterday here on stacker sports. I heard that Giannis guy might turn into something, maybe he is available. 64 points, not bad.

I will jump on tonight for some Thursday Night Football action.

Did any of you watch what TNT was pegging as the battle of the champions last night? Nuggets vs Warriors was a good and exciting game but in the end the Joke was on the Warriors who blew an 18 point lead and lost on a very long buzzer beater by the Joker. 

Jokic is incredible. Some of the passes that guy was making were just unreal, especially for a big. 

Congrats to the US junior hockey team on making the finals of the World Junior tournament. I wish them luck today in trying to take down the host Swedes. Let's not discuss what happened to Canada. 

Here is something I came across earlier today that I thought you guys might find interesting. NFL is not only sports king, it is pretty much king of everything when it comes to television viewing.

Stacker Sports- Day 32

The Browns are in the playoffs. The final TNF game of the season looked like it was going to be a blowout early on but it got a little interesting in the second half. Good thing the Browns D is outstanding because the second half looked a lot more like a 2023 Joe Flacco should look. I am sure the Jets would have liked to have picked up the W on the road against a good team to prove they aren't quitting but another L isn't the worst thing. Rodgers will be back next year. They have a good D, and a good coach. 

And how about those Detroit Pistons. Pushing their losing streak to 28 games in style. Taking the top team in the East to OT. They play the Raptors tomorrow night. I am not cheering for it but I am expecting a Pistons win and end of streak because that would be totally on brand for the Raptors. I think a poll might be in order to see what the community thinks will happen in this match of juggernauts. 

I actually watched a bowl game. Well, not a whole game, but I did watch some of the Alamo Bowl. Have you guys watched any bowl games yet?

Quite a bit of activity for NBA trade deadline yesterday. No blockbuster deals but a flurry of smaller trades with a number of contenders trying to solidify their lineups for the stretch run.

Time for an NHL trade deadline contest? 

NFL Awards were announced last night in what was actually a relatively entertaining show. I watched a bit of it. I was surprised that Joe Flacco won comeback player of the year and that Kevin Stefanski won coach of the year. Stefanski did have 4 different starting QBs this year so a likely deserving victory. All the other award winners seemed logical to me. 

I was surprised that Lamar Jackson got 49 out of 50 first place votes for MVP but he was definitely the right pick. 

Shill me who you think was undeserving and who got snubbed.

Well, we had our first big trade of the NBA trade deadline season. Spicy P, Toronto and Kyle Lowry's beloved, traded to the Pacers. @gnilma was the SN Woj of the day breaking the news. It was a bit of wild day in the NBA as we also learned about the death of Warriors assistant coach Dejan Milojevic. Only 46, very sad.

UFC 296 had some strong matches and a bit of drama. Congrats to our first UFC pick 'em winner @Kaffi. You are now the oracle of the octagon until next PPV where you will defend your title against all comers. Hold that belt with pride. 

There were a number of bowl games on Saturday and I did not pay attention to any of them. 

Some good NFL games yesterday and the playoff picture is starting to take shape. The AFC should be quite exciting to see how the seeding and final playoff spots shake out the final few weeks of the season. The Bills are surging at the right time and the Bengals are hanging around despite not having Burrow. 

Looking for some feedback from the community in regards to a baseball fantasy league that @needcreations_ is trying to put together for the 2024 season. He is suggesting a larger buy in of 50k or 100k sats but I suggested we might get more interest with a lower buy in. SuperBowl week finally kicked off with SuperBowl opening night and I watched the festivities so you didn't have to. 

Here are the highlights:
- Bruce Buffer introduced the teams (wasn't as cool as it sounds)
- Kelce got booed by 49ers fans and vowed that it was going to pump him up for the game (snore)
- Kyle Shanahan spent most of his clearly slightly "under the influence" press conference defending Brock Purdy
- Mahomes tried to be funny but sounded like an arrogant jerk. 
- The only thing worth watching was 11 year old Jeremiah Fennell asking the players questions and then stating he is picking the 49ers to win because he is a Raiders fan and could never pick the Chiefs. That kid is going places. 

I am glad I endured this misery so you didn't have to. I am not too ashamed to accept zaps as compensation for my pain and suffering. 

And no, I am not going to whine about the fact that the NFL has the 49ers practicing on a third rate field while the Chiefs practice in the lap of luxury in the Raiders facilities. Good. 49ers need to get back to playing with a chip on their shoulder. Hope they made them stay at a one star sleazy vegas motel instead of the MGM grand as well.

Stacker Sports- Day 63

We have a few people interested in joining a ***stacker*** ***sports*** fantasy baseball league this season. ... Finally, for those who have been interested in football (soccer) content, new ***stacker***, @WorldFootball

We have a new champ in the NFL pick 'em. The Rookie, @stargut, walks in and takes the title from a cast of veteran all stars with a perfect 3/3. The only person who had faith in the Seahawks or maybe just faith the Eagles late game luck has run out. I am sure our veterans will be back next week to ensure the rookie has a sophomore slump. 

Overall the game wasn't very good but the last few minutes were definitely exciting. 

The Lakers raised a banner for the in-season tournament championship. I guess it was well earned but feels to me more like a "tell me you aren't winning the nba championship, without telling me you aren't winning the nba championship" kind of thing. Thoughts?

Also in NBA news, despite their best efforts the Raptors did not lose to an undermanned, not very good Hornets team who lost by 53 points in the game prior. Last night's victory did not give me confidence this Raptors group can be anything more than a potential play in team. Maybe if they win the play in they can raise a banner (ok a bit too far- sorry Lebron). 

We have a few people interested in joining a stacker sports fantasy baseball league this season. I think I even SN pilled the one other Blue Jays fan on nostr with prospect of a league. We are going to make our best efforts to make it as straightforward as possible. Set your lineup once a week and go. So let me know if you are interested. I know we are still many months away but it would be good to gauge how many potential teams we will have in the league.

Any boxing fans lingering around ***Stacker*** ***Sports***? ... I took a night off from watching ***sports*** last night and played Nintendo Switch with the kiddos. ... I noticed it was on the same night as UFC so I was thinking of just having a combat ***sports*** pick 'em and

I took a night off from watching sports last night and played Nintendo Switch with the kiddos. I did catch a few minutes of the Raptors game and then later a few minutes of the Hawks vs Kings game before I turned on a movie (Equalizer 3- pretty good if you like action films). 

Any boxing fans lingering around Stacker Sports? @kaffi, who keeps dominating our UFC pick 'ems requested we do a boxing pick 'em for the upcoming Fury vs Usyk fight. I noticed it was on the same night as UFC so I was thinking of just having a combat sports pick 'em and include a couple of the boxing matches in with the ufc matches for that night but if enough people are interested I will run a separate one. 

@Undisciplined's NBA trade season contest is still running if you want to throw your hat in the ring with some trade ideas. Speaking of NBA, I am not a Joel Embiid fan but credit where credit is due the man is having an MVP season. He took Wemby to school last night and scored 70 points. 

Wow, the told you so, US hot take artist media knives are out for Brock Purdy after one lackluster playoff game in horrible weather conditions where he still led his team to a game winning drive. Going 6/7 on that game winning drive. If the point is Pudry is not Mahomes, Jackson or Allen that's fair. If the point is there are a couple other young QBs in Stroud and Love that may prove to be the next great QBs in the league that have more traits than Purdy, that's fair as well. But why these losers are so desperate for Purdy to fail so they can say I told you so, I will never understand. Keep it up I say, you are just firing up the whole 49ers team.

For the first time since the territories rolled out I almost wrote Meta Takeover in the title but I caught it at Met. 

The Monday Night Football games were much better than I expected them to be. We got two games that came down the final minute (final second in the Giants case) and two upsets. My dog was not pleased about the games going down the wire and her late night walk getting delayed. 

Congrats to @BlokchainB for notching another back to back win in the weekly pick em. This was the closest pick 'em we have had. It all came down to the Titans/Dolphins result with BlokchainB having the Titans and @BTC_Bellzer having picked the Dolphins. Both were set to go 3/3 with a victory in that game, BTC_bellzer had the tiebreaker right on and BlokchainB was off the tiebreaker by 1 point. Impressive guys. 

Thanks to @siggy47 for providing us with "Siggy onsite" last night from the Leafs/Islanders game. @kr is reeling today after the Leafs defeat and left only with the joy of knowing Siggy had to witness the jubilation of John Tavres' (Long island's greatest turncoat) 1000th point live in person. 

May the baseball gods bestow upon us a trade or interesting signing today.
