LNC centralizes NAT transversal over 2 mailbox proxies. Sure, you can self-host one, but if you really care about privacy and sovereignty, you should connect to your node directly through wireguard.

I have been struggling to reconnect to my node all morning after the update. At the risk of incurring wrath of some here (@DarthCoin), I am running umbrel through tor. I have really gotten used to Zeus so any hints would be appreciated.

You should stop to use TOR to access your node, it's not reliable at all, and even when it works it's slow as fuck. Use LNC, zerotier or Wireguard.
I don't know umbrel sorry.

I no longer focus on routing, but I still agree that I want to get off tor. I'm looking to use a VPN on LNC. One problem I foresee is the need for a static ip address, which is pretty pricey with my provider.

You can use Tailscale to establish a clearnet connection over VPN.

I am happy to say I have made a little progress. Today I set up Tailscale and am now running my node clearnet. I will note any changes I observe. Down the road (maybe 6 months) I do intend to lose the Umbrel training wheels.

That is an excellent suggestion. Can you recommend a good guide to do that? Ultimately I intend to get rid of my raspberry pi and umbrel set up, but I need to live with this for now due to my upcoming travel schedule.

I’d recommend what I did. I kept the Umbrel node running for lightning, but also run Bitcoin Core (pruned) on my laptop with Sparrow for on chain funds.
Once you’ve done the initial sync, you don’t actually need to keep Core running 24/7 for cold wallets.
It’s funny how running Core is often the last step in many bitcoiners self sovereignty journeys, when it’s actually so simple to do (the biggest barrier I had was learning the steps to verify the download, but even that is simply a matter of following the step by step instructions and takes a matter of minutes!).
