Google Play is trying to shut down Bitcoin developers with open source applications.

Guys, always keep in mind: play stores are not the ONLY source of the OSS (open source software)! You can always go on the github repository of the app - releases and download the latest version. THAT is actually the original source of the software NOT the play stores one. You can also use Obtainium to get those apps directly from github repositories, as I explained in this guide.

This is a gross over exaggeration. 9 times out of 10 there's some minor reason or mistake for it. Other 1 time it is something easily fixable.

But to categorize this as open source is being attacked is rediculous. There's actual real threats to be concerned about. Yet another boy who cries wolf moment.

Stay vigilant and analyze all possible scenarios. That google shit could be just a testing ground to see how open source developers are responding to such "mistakes" or "easy fixable"... Nothing is a coincidence when is about Google.

Wow, that's crazy! Google Play is really messing with Bitcoin devs who make open source apps. 😡

But you're right, we don't need play stores to get the OSS we want. We can just go to the github repo of the app and download it from there. That's the real deal, not the play store version. 👍

Or we can use Obtainium, that sounds cool too. It lets us get apps directly from github repos, right? That's awesome! 😎

Good incentive to completely de-google. My next project is to pick an old android phone and read one of @DarthCoin 's guides.

This kind of reminds me of posts announcing the shutting of fiat on- ramps to buy btc. Short term tough, long term it's good news.

I actually de-googled a year or two ago, and it has been great. I use my own server for contacts and calendar, and open source apps for everything. I don't have any Google services in my phone, it's great.

Whoa scary. I just read your guide, it is very useful. I run CalyxOS and it's been an enormous pain in the ass to install apps because Aurora keeps breaking. I didn't think of downloading directly from Github..

Already happen to Blixt, few months ago, Apple decided to close the app repository until he setup company or something like that. And other open source devs had the same, not just Blixt. Almost 2-3 months without download for apple users... Not talking that apple users are always threaten by having disabled the apps directly from apple servers, remotely.

Apple users... buy a damn android device, wipe it and install a clean OS. Is just a matter of time until they get fucked.

I use as much FOSS as possible and on Android (GrapheneOS) Inise Obtainium to download and update them when possible. I miss a proper store and still use F-Droid for app discovery. Also I'm still force to use proprietary apps using Play Store, espacially banking apps until I can get ride of all or mostof my bank account for good and use mostly Bitcoin and cash.

Use a separate device for all those crap apps that require google services. Keep your bitcoin device CLEAN from shit.

Any app that still require google services, even with Aurora using a ghost mode user, it still have access to your IMEI, location etc...

The whole idea of de-googleing a device is to NOT install back ANY google services. Aurora still use those services and is installing them automatically.

I will NOT install any app that require google services. F-droid is another bullshit... all apks from F-droid are already from github. So why using a 3rd party, only for signing the apps and search them when you could just download them directly from the source, github or direct link?

Obtainium is very clean and easy. You just point it to the github repo, so you are sure is the REAL one and done, you are alerted when there's a new update. Clean, private, no bullshit.

The convenience of using F-Droid is that it will show you the updates of the apps you have already installed so that you do not have to check each of them yourself.

More OSS apps need to be on F-droid if for no other reason than a backup.

There's a upper size limit of new APKs that F-droid will include. If they're too big, they won't be considered...

Sometimes if an app (that's not too big) gets turned down by the F-droid team, contact Izzy via https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/ and he might be able to add it to his repository.

He's super friendly and helpful!

Plus, add his repository to your F-droid and you have Obtainium on F-droid via his repository!

Because Fdroid is nothing else than a another "store"... The ORIGINAL SOURCE is github. F-droid is simply grabbing the app from github, verify it and deliver it to you. Why would I use another intermediary instead of just taking it from SOURCE, github?

Ease of use, that is why. You are correct about getting the source but it seems like you are changing the criteria. The reason to put an app on Google play is for ease of install and exposure. Apps stores are great for discovery. You would use Fdroid for the same reason they use Google Play. Ease of use, ease of updates, and discovery.

Never said fdroid wasnt relying on github. Your comment derided using a third party like fdroid when someone could just go to github. I was simply mentioning that github is also a third party that requires trust.

Because they dont charge and everything they offer is open source. They are a store with values and integrity. You're asking people who are use to google play store to go straight to github, that's a big leapnfor many. Fdroid is a reasonable step in between, and one that respects privacy/open source ethos.
