Thanks for indulging my obscure question from yesterday. I promise I will try to refrain from discussing roster construction of individual teams that no one on here watches except me. Last night, I was watching some highlights from the MLB all star week festivities and it had me thinking about a discussion I had with a friend last year around all star break: Would you rather be able to hit a ball 500ft or pitch a ball 100mph? He said hit, I said pitch? (maybe I was wrong because every team seems to have at least 1 guy who can throw 100 now but it was a subjective thing). Anyways, with that in mind, but not wanting to limit it to just baseball:
Shill me the one elite individual athletic feat you wish you could achieve.
10 sats for every response. More for the best ones.
Cheers, GR
Cricket one. To consistently hit 90 metre shots from medium to fast pace bowlers (a fast bowler is around 90 mph) as 90 metres would allow you to clear the boundaries at Lords Cricket Ground in London (the home of cricket) and do that and you will never have to buy a drink in an English pub again :)

I have never played cricket but I really want to try. It looks quite fun.

It has a lot of similarities to baseball…. Just remember the ball gets to bounce first though! Hard to see games in the US, sometimes they put one-offs on in Canada.
Assuming you aren’t familiar with Test cricket (apologies if you are); at the moment England are playing Australia in the Ashes in the UK (the trophy is a tiny urn of ashes - long story)
5 test matches at 5 different grounds around the UK. Each team plays 2-innings (they go into bat twice) attempting to score the most runs before the other side gets them all out (takes their ‘wickets’)
Each match can last 5 days. It is currently 2-1 after 3 matches to Australia. The next test is on the 19th July. England are playing a new form of very entertaining, aggressive cricket which has breathed new life into the game and ignited the fans.
More usual games are one day affairs or limited numbers of balls bowled with 1 innings per side. The decision as a captain is always do you bowl first, get the other team ‘out’ and try to score more runs on your go. Or do you bat and get as many runs as possible…. Usually the condition of the pitch / the ground dictates as it most influences the bowlers ability to get people out. And the condition changes over the course of the day with the weather…..

I had heard of these matches that last multiple days. Thanks for giving me the run down on some of the nuances of the game.

That’s just ‘how’ the games themselves are played…. But ‘how’ it’s played is best picked up by watching the game or better still having a go.

On your specific debate, I'd prefer to be able to hit a 500ft ball. When I played baseball, I always found a great hit far more satisfying than a great throw.
I was generally able to do most things at a high enough level to enjoy it, but having the court vision and passing ability of Magic or Jokic would be amazing. I've always played point guard and love play-making, but I definitely can't do anything like that.

I think most people would prefer to crush a 500ft homer but I love pitching. I am just amazed at the power and spin these guys can generate.

It might be that I was never a good enough pitcher to really appreciate it.
I can kind of imagine the feeling I'd get from fooling a batter with a brilliant pitch, but it's more abstract to me than thinking about absolutely lacing a ball out of the stadium.

Pitch a perfect game.

Yes that would be amazing. I threw a no hitter in rep ball when I was 14 or so but I also walked 5 guys and my team made two errors as well but we won so I will still file it in the Glory Days folder. Haha

Justin Jefferson's catch against the Bills. Stefon Diggs catch against the Vikings (same game). Stefon Diggs catch against the saints (Minneapolis miracle). Those are the things I wish my body could do.
reply
Yeah some of these catches elite receivers make are just absurd when you think about it.
