I've noticed certain user(s) posting lots of links every day but essentially responding to none of the questions I raise about their posts. This seems cheap and clutters my feed. Here's my vote to more users. If you post links to hog screen space, that seems like gaming the site. I don't want to see your posts at all in that case. @darthcoin comes all the way down from the mountain to respond to people, and someone at their computer ALL day posting links can't respond? I call bullshit.

I agree, but some people who post links are not necessarily the authors and often have no idea about the subject.
So I think it's better if they don't reply instead of spreading nonsense, or even better if they start learning about these topics instead of sharing a lot of (cheap) links.

If someone shared something because they wanted to learn more from the community, wiring so in a comment seems rather obvious. Ignoring comments, on the other hand, seems rude.
reply
49 sats \ 3 replies \ @Public_N_M_E 17 Aug 2023
Absolutely. If you post a link you should post a comment with your thoughts on the article. (Guilty of not doing so sometimes, but I'll endeavour to do so going forward). And then ask the community what their thoughts are or if anyone can elaborate on a concept you didn't understand.
Perhaps our current format of posting links has some room for improvement. Currently it's title, link. Click post.
Perhaps we should move to a title, link, discussion box, click post. Format @k00b what do you think? Perhaps adding a 3rd field to fill in would stop link spamming and force (at least the poster) to open discussion. Whether they get discussion is then up to the community.

I guess it has to do with this site essentially copying the format of hacker news, a website I've never used.
I encourage the change though because this isn't hacker news.

If you've spent time on nostr or r/cc you'll find a lot of users just link spam hoping for zaps/upvotes for moons or whatever. It is lazy honestly. But I don't think it's a problem unique to SN. I think it's a problem with rewarding people for posting on social media. Cast your net wide enough, you'll catch fish.

I agree, a short bulletpoint list of key takeaways would be nice at least, if not just a common courtesy, especially if the OP is not the author of the link. I think the best approach is to just ignore these posts though and let the market weed them out

I think it's particularly useful when someone posts a link to a technical article and non-technicians would like to understand better.
reply
192 sats \ 5 replies \ @mudbloodvonfrei 17 Aug 2023
This could be solved by raising the cost of posting. Not viable at the moment probably because SN is still kind of a PoC (not in terms of the tech stack and implementation, but in the sense that the concept of value-for-value on the interwebs is cutting edge) and scaring away users would slow momentum significantly, but I do think that down the line the cost of getting my attention should be more than 1 sat. Or maybe this can be implemented in custom feeds - have people "bid" by deciding how much they pay to post, and people can set a filter to only show posts that put down more than x sats, or have been zapped more than y sats, etc. What do you think @k00b?
reply
98 sats \ 0 replies \ @k00b 17 Aug 2023
Totally. I also like the framing of paying for others' attention. It's all kind of fair game and I'm certain we've barely scratched the surface.
reply
13 sats \ 2 replies \ @Public_N_M_E 17 Aug 2023
The filter, would that not just prevent any post from getting off the ground without the author boosting it first?
Eg filter posts by "show me all above 1ksats" you wouldn't see fresh 2minute old posts if that filter was applied. So many decent posts wouldn't get off the ground and would get lost in the sea of shit ones.

I consume posts chronologically and generally avoid the "hot" or "top" tabs. I would catch those posts, the same as I catch the stupid link-posts that the poster doesn't pay attention to.
reply
26 sats \ 0 replies \ @Public_N_M_E 17 Aug 2023
Ah I see. I tend to consume via top or hot first and then if I have time I'll scroll through new so I hadn't considered how using only new (or mostly new) you have to wade through the quagmire of poor quality hoping to find something of value.

I agree in general -- the comments are what make SN interesting, way more than the links. But some of the issue is, I think, that SN is sort of a hybrid: Twitter-like (e.g., transient links and comments) and blog-like (e.g., evergreen pieces and discussions). It will be interesting to see how it evolves when there's 10x, 100x the number of users, and how different sorts of incentives will tilt it in one direction or the other.

I tend to agree that SN has multiple use cases. I have found that SN is my first goto for breaking Bitcoin news. Reason being that someone is bound to post any important news here and very quickly it will get zapped to the top.
I am likely one of the "offending" SN users that the OP (@premitive1) is referencing.
Sometimes I have nothing useful to say but "hey here is a link that might be interesting."
reply
13 sats \ 0 replies \ @Public_N_M_E 17 Aug 2023
Do you post the link without reading the article first? (Not accusing you just checking) I am wondering if due to not wanting to duplicate posts (always check related before pressing post) we have users posting a link they haven't read because it's breaking news in order to be the first poster so they can have the zaps for that content. A sort of post first read second mentality?
reply

Do you ignore comments to your link? That's really what I decry. As long as you respond to comments then I think it's okay to post links.

I like how SN currently has it labeled when posting:
Link or Discussions
Sometimes a user whats to spur on a discussion and other times it is just "hey here is a link that might be interesting."
reply

Interesting things cause discussions.
If it's not interesting enough for the probably poster to actually engage the discussion, maybe the link wasn't interesting and it didn't need to be shared.

Of course I can't (bother to) prove this, but it's probably fair to assume that a good portion of such links haven't even been read by their posters.
That doesn't imply these links are all useless, though. I've found interesting stuff among them.
I seem to recall that it's been debated here before that simply posting a link without any comment/summary should be disabled?

Speed is of the essence.
If I find althat I need to go to r/Bitcoin in order to learn what's current, because nobody so motivated had read the article or listened to the podcast, etc, and thus couldn't post, then that harms the utility of SN, for me.
And all that would do is have people ask chatgpt for the summary /tl;dr:.

I don't have a problem with someone asking chatGPT to summarize their link for the audience. I don't have the same compulsion to get Bitcoin news as quickly as humanly possible and I think most others could tolerate getting news ten minutes after people like you.

Agree. Spamming links is poor form.
Hands up I am guilty of posting links to articles I found either relevant or interesting. What I had noticed is these links are usually my lowest engagement generating posts. I may find them interesting but clearly others don't. As a user further down states there's a lot of people taking "the Nostr approach" could also be referred to as the "r/cc" approach. Where you throw enough shit at the walls and see how much of it sticks. I'm unsure I fully back the notion of making it more expensive to post as the solution to this problem. So far my understanding of how SN works is that the community decide what they want to see by zapping that content. Content with zero zaps should be telling the writer, they're wasting their time flogging that horse.
I do wonder if perhaps we have a bot problem? Bots crossposting? Could explain why they don't respond to any engagement as their only job is scour "crypto new site" copy link, paste link. Move on.
Is there a way we can test for/identify bot accounts?

It's similar to how r/CryptoCurrency became (even more) unreadable once they launched the MOON tokens. It's a classic case of perverse incentives leading to a degradation in quality.
People were basically spamming the subreddit with tons of copypasta low-quality links from aggregators like Crypto Panic; they would dump these crappy links to collect MOON but not engage in any way.
I realised that there is little point in bothering to check it any more.
