I've noticed certain user(s) posting lots of links every day but essentially responding to none of the questions I raise about their posts. This seems cheap and clutters my feed. Here's my vote to more users. If you post links to hog screen space, that seems like gaming the site. I don't want to see your posts at all in that case. @darthcoin comes all the way down from the mountain to respond to people, and someone at their computer ALL day posting links can't respond? I call bullshit.
I agree, but some people who post links are not necessarily the authors and often have no idea about the subject. So I think it's better if they don't reply instead of spreading nonsense, or even better if they start learning about these topics instead of sharing a lot of (cheap) links.
reply
If someone shared something because they wanted to learn more from the community, wiring so in a comment seems rather obvious. Ignoring comments, on the other hand, seems rude.
reply
Absolutely. If you post a link you should post a comment with your thoughts on the article. (Guilty of not doing so sometimes, but I'll endeavour to do so going forward). And then ask the community what their thoughts are or if anyone can elaborate on a concept you didn't understand.
Perhaps our current format of posting links has some room for improvement. Currently it's title, link. Click post. Perhaps we should move to a title, link, discussion box, click post. Format @k00b what do you think? Perhaps adding a 3rd field to fill in would stop link spamming and force (at least the poster) to open discussion. Whether they get discussion is then up to the community.
reply
I guess it has to do with this site essentially copying the format of hacker news, a website I've never used. I encourage the change though because this isn't hacker news.
reply
If you've spent time on nostr or r/cc you'll find a lot of users just link spam hoping for zaps/upvotes for moons or whatever. It is lazy honestly. But I don't think it's a problem unique to SN. I think it's a problem with rewarding people for posting on social media. Cast your net wide enough, you'll catch fish.
reply
that's why i hope this site would take a note from reddit, and allow us to make our own substackz. :)
reply
I agree, a short bulletpoint list of key takeaways would be nice at least, if not just a common courtesy, especially if the OP is not the author of the link. I think the best approach is to just ignore these posts though and let the market weed them out
I still love the idea about setting your own custom fee amounts too
reply
I think it's particularly useful when someone posts a link to a technical article and non-technicians would like to understand better.
reply
This could be solved by raising the cost of posting. Not viable at the moment probably because SN is still kind of a PoC (not in terms of the tech stack and implementation, but in the sense that the concept of value-for-value on the interwebs is cutting edge) and scaring away users would slow momentum significantly, but I do think that down the line the cost of getting my attention should be more than 1 sat. Or maybe this can be implemented in custom feeds - have people "bid" by deciding how much they pay to post, and people can set a filter to only show posts that put down more than x sats, or have been zapped more than y sats, etc. What do you think @k00b?
reply
Totally. I also like the framing of paying for others' attention. It's all kind of fair game and I'm certain we've barely scratched the surface.
reply
The filter, would that not just prevent any post from getting off the ground without the author boosting it first?
Eg filter posts by "show me all above 1ksats" you wouldn't see fresh 2minute old posts if that filter was applied. So many decent posts wouldn't get off the ground and would get lost in the sea of shit ones.
reply
I consume posts chronologically and generally avoid the "hot" or "top" tabs. I would catch those posts, the same as I catch the stupid link-posts that the poster doesn't pay attention to.
reply
Ah I see. I tend to consume via top or hot first and then if I have time I'll scroll through new so I hadn't considered how using only new (or mostly new) you have to wade through the quagmire of poor quality hoping to find something of value.
reply
Your bid/filter idea seems like a great one to me
reply
I agree in general -- the comments are what make SN interesting, way more than the links. But some of the issue is, I think, that SN is sort of a hybrid: Twitter-like (e.g., transient links and comments) and blog-like (e.g., evergreen pieces and discussions). It will be interesting to see how it evolves when there's 10x, 100x the number of users, and how different sorts of incentives will tilt it in one direction or the other.
reply
I tend to agree that SN has multiple use cases. I have found that SN is my first goto for breaking Bitcoin news. Reason being that someone is bound to post any important news here and very quickly it will get zapped to the top.
I am likely one of the "offending" SN users that the OP (@premitive1) is referencing.
Sometimes I have nothing useful to say but "hey here is a link that might be interesting."
reply
Do you post the link without reading the article first? (Not accusing you just checking) I am wondering if due to not wanting to duplicate posts (always check related before pressing post) we have users posting a link they haven't read because it's breaking news in order to be the first poster so they can have the zaps for that content. A sort of post first read second mentality?
reply
Do you ignore comments to your link? That's really what I decry. As long as you respond to comments then I think it's okay to post links.
reply
I like how SN currently has it labeled when posting:
Link or Discussions
Sometimes a user whats to spur on a discussion and other times it is just "hey here is a link that might be interesting."
reply
Interesting things cause discussions. If it's not interesting enough for the probably poster to actually engage the discussion, maybe the link wasn't interesting and it didn't need to be shared. This is a social website.
reply
make zaps only apply to comments and they'll stop.
reply
Not necessarily.
Many people post to help spread awareness of something, and SN is just one of those targets where a post will help further boost the signal. Any sats received are just icing on the cake.
reply
If you want to spread awareness, at least include a comment to the post explaining what exactly you want people to be aware of. Link spamming spreads annoyance.
reply
I don't want to go that far, as there are high quality posts I want to boost. Compromise: no sats on links, only discussion posts.
reply
good idea
reply
Agree.
Of course I can't (bother to) prove this, but it's probably fair to assume that a good portion of such links haven't even been read by their posters.
That doesn't imply these links are all useless, though. I've found interesting stuff among them.
I seem to recall that it's been debated here before that simply posting a link without any comment/summary should be disabled?
reply
Speed is of the essence.
If I find althat I need to go to r/Bitcoin in order to learn what's current, because nobody so motivated had read the article or listened to the podcast, etc, and thus couldn't post, then that harms the utility of SN, for me.
And all that would do is have people ask chatgpt for the summary /tl;dr:.
reply
Fair points.
And all that would do is have people ask chatgpt for the summary /tl;dr
In fact, that may actually have been raised the last time this was discussed as well. Thanks.
reply
I don't have a problem with someone asking chatGPT to summarize their link for the audience. I don't have the same compulsion to get Bitcoin news as quickly as humanly possible and I think most others could tolerate getting news ten minutes after people like you.
reply
I feel like this behavior is worse on nostr than here, but I agree it's annoying.
Even if you're cynically spamming content to get zaps, it'll be better in the long-term to make people want to engage with you.
reply
The default to global feed is one of several reasons I'm not in Nostr yet. If I want to see posts from strangers Twitter and stacker news already exist. I want to see posts from my friends and collaborators!
reply
Mine defaults to "following". I haven't looked at the global feed in weeks.
reply
I don't really want to touch a client that even has a global feed yet. Unless the only relay connected is my personal relay, why would I want to consume everything there?
reply
I haven't messed around with the settings, but I'm pretty sure Iris allows you to control how extensive your global feed is, in terms of relay connection distance.
reply
Does Iris have default relays?
reply
I'm not sure. When I started using it, I had no understanding of the technology and honestly I still understand it way less than most people who use it. There were definitely a bunch of relay options that I didn't look into when I got started.
reply
Ironically, no OP answers in this post comments đŸ˜…
reply
be patient my friend
reply
Good forbid I work for a living. I'm talking about comments that never get a response, not those that have to languish for a few hours.
reply
Just some innocent joke :)
reply
I've discovered a bunch of new information clicking through the links (hacker news style) and really enjoy when a poster also provides an evidence of understanding we'll call it, which is just a short tl;dr, and maybe their own take on the linked material.
reply
We are deeply sorry for "cluttering your feed".. lol. Maybe they just have nothing to say... They probably better off not saying anything. I agree, it is polite to answer or add something of value (don't just post for posting, have something to say/add) but people stopped being polite long time ago, so there is that... Other than that , let them be...
reply
Let it be, let it beee, let it beeeeee, let it be. She whispers words of wisdom, let it be!!
reply
I think some of those people are just hoping to earn some sats by curating content they find that has not yet been posted and don't really have the chops to engage in discussion.
Also if you're going to post an opinion on SN, get ready to be made to look like an ass when SN'rs tip apart your argument, its not for the faint hearted
reply
There's a difference between an opinion and a description or summary. Point taken though
reply
Or just sat harvesting by reposting others’ content without anything to add lol
reply
Agree. Spamming links is poor form. Hands up I am guilty of posting links to articles I found either relevant or interesting. What I had noticed is these links are usually my lowest engagement generating posts. I may find them interesting but clearly others don't. As a user further down states there's a lot of people taking "the Nostr approach" could also be referred to as the "r/cc" approach. Where you throw enough shit at the walls and see how much of it sticks. I'm unsure I fully back the notion of making it more expensive to post as the solution to this problem. So far my understanding of how SN works is that the community decide what they want to see by zapping that content. Content with zero zaps should be telling the writer, they're wasting their time flogging that horse.
I do wonder if perhaps we have a bot problem? Bots crossposting? Could explain why they don't respond to any engagement as their only job is scour "crypto new site" copy link, paste link. Move on. Is there a way we can test for/identify bot accounts?
reply
I wish the person/people I thought of in the original post were bots. The people who run the bots actually respond to posts made by the bots!
reply
Call it whatever you want but I don't like to repeat myself over and over and that's why I answer with my guides links. Those guides have more than enough the answer. If more newbs will read my guides their lufe will be much easier.
I am sure you didn't read all my guides. You will understand why.
Why don't you answer with long posts over and over the same thing? Let me know when you are tired.
reply
I mostly post links and don't reply to most unproductive comments.
There are a few users that comment on stuff while obviously not having watched/listened/read what I posted. Bonus points for just saying they don't like it or don't have a productive solution or original thought for presented problem/topic.
reply
Yeah, but if someone asks a question, do you ignore it?
reply
Abd what is wrong wiyh answering with a link that explain it in more details and also could be bookmarked for later? Do you really think you will learn more about bitcoin by saving random posts from reddit or SN? No. You save documentation. This is how I learned: I read documentatik and save it fir kater too.
reply
I don't think there's anything wrong with using a link as a response to a question. I think there's something wrong with creating a new post that is a link, and then ignoring that post there after.
reply
@darthcoin responding to questions with links is definitely appropriate and is always extremely helpful in my experience. When people initiate a brand new post with nothing but a link, and the article is highly technical / looks like a Greek textbook to me - that’s normally when I ignore the post and leave them Zapless
reply
I don't understand your point.
reply
Obviously. This has been the problem since your first comment. My post used you as an example of reasonable and productive behavior. Not as an example of unreasonable and unproductive behavior. As for your comments...
reply
Most of SN users think that I am here to "earn sats" posting on SN. They are all wrong. I am here to help them, even if that in the beginning they will not get my "attitude". Later they will remember my words. Always.
reply
Other than your defaulting to impatience and aggressive language, I think you provide great service.
Genuine question yes, obvious bait question no
reply
95% of my questions are genuine, and the rest are totally snarky.
reply
It's similar to how r/CryptoCurrency became (even more) unreadable once they launched the MOON tokens. It's a classic case of perverse incentives leading to a degradation in quality.
People were basically spamming the subreddit with tons of copypasta low-quality links from aggregators like Crypto Panic; they would dump these crappy links to collect MOON but not engage in any way.
I realised that there is little point in bothering to check it any more.
reply
I've noticed the same on X and nostr with a slightly different take: people posting questions but then never responding to any comments.
reply
Don't tip them
reply
reply
I like how you are pissed of for my links to my bitcoin guides but you are not so pissed of for all the shit load of bullshit crap links posted from twitter or other crap sites. You are pathetic.
reply
Pull your head out of your ass, @DarthCoin, I was applauding you for responding to people despite being being. I have no problem with your posts or guides, just your attitude :)
reply
I don't give a shit about people that don't like my "atitude". It's your problem not mine if you don't like it. I don't care about snowflakes and will never kiss ass to nobody.

You give a shit about getting tagged in a post though, or you wouldn't still be commenting on this post.
