Writing longer form back and forths on SN, under the threat of being read and contested, has made me so much better at communicating. It's crazy.
At least I think that's the cause.
reply
I really like the book "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. I have re-read it a few times, lots of good advice on being clear and brief.

Great book.
Here are the book notes from Derek Sivers, a great mind by the way, highly recommended.

yes, Derek is cool - I quite like his books and writing style: short, clear, and fun.

I'll be honest, I find myself taking a few of the high signal links that are sometimes posted to "recent" and reposting it on nostr for more engagement / conversation around it. Sometimes don't really have an incentive to upvote the original along the way. High quality conversations here don't seem to happen like they used to. It's just community stuff now. Which is fine if that's what it ends up being and most people are happy with it.
Probably not a very good user but this is what the incentives align up for me atm. I'll upvote something if it's OG and I feel like adds signal but otherwise I think I'll lurk more and just scan recent for news to share opinions on elsewhere. Maybe it's from many more users, or maybe the comment rewards are gamed too much by the circle jerking in the saloon, but the high signal conversations have fallen off.
reply
Curious how you'd characterize the "high quality/signal conversations" -- I've actually had the opposite impression, in that sometimes (not always) there's really thoughtful engagement around here. I've never found it elsewhere. If it used to be even better, then man, that must have been something!

Thanks for the feedback, maybe personalized feeds will help in the future :)

Tony is describing a deeper dynamic (in part and in the first paragraph at least). While he's too humble to consider himself such, for stars and rising stars, Twitter-like experiences will always be more engaging and rewarding. Afaict forums are a relatively level playing field meant for "the rest of us" who aren't content watching the stars from the bleachers.
Perhaps conversations have become shallow as a result of there being more of them, which has so many inputs, but I haven't noticed much of an absolute downward change in high quality takes (I'd guess the opposite). Indeed, perhaps personalized ranking will allow us each to subjectively see our preferred signal band as noise increases.
Still it won't change that this format favors weak identities just as well as the strong and that's not going to be valuable for everyone and that's okay.
+1 on the excellent and thoughtful feedback

This is a pretty good analysis, will give it some thought.

Just a heads up that I'm trying something different today. I have been trying to orange pill everyone I meet lately, and I had a kind of funny experience recently. I'm going to post the story on SN. The basic plot is true, but I did exaggerate in parts to try to make it more entertaining. I'm going to forward any sats I get to Anita, but of course she had nothing to do with this. It is a little wacky, but what the hell? If I can't try wacky here, where can I?
reply
Highly recommend reading it, in my opinion you should make “Orange Pill Diaries” a regular series on SN

Cool - I’ll grab a stool. That’s what the Saloon is for isn’t it?

I'm making a regular post. Can't really cram it in here! @carlosfandango, I was thinking of you when I wrote it. You'll soon see why. It's pretty silly, but I had fun.

Spending the week building some workout equipment from a HUGE fallen tree branch that was unfortunately struck by lightning. I successfully fashioned a 20 lb bar from an appropriately sized chunk of the branch (via chainsaw, orbital sander and redwood stain).
Today I am going to carve out some smaller weights, and start working on my home -made squat rack and pull-up bar setup.
Any leftover wood will be used for future furniture projects. When nature blesses you with millions of sats worth of high quality wood, it would be a shame not to use the beautiful resource to its fullest extent, without waste. Working out by building workout equipment -exciting times!

Yes, I always ask people how they handle inflation; some buy houses&land, some buy cars, and some buy gold. Then I would randomly mention Bitcoin ( not actually random🤣 ) say here is how I solve this problem, with Bitcoin - it is the best solution in the long term. If someone is curious, I then explain more.

what did I do to deserve this 1111 sats? people on the internet are crazy these days 😂 and I like it!
reply
maybe you need to write another SN guide about zapping. Few knows that if you want a post to be more visible (upvote) is not about how many sats you zap, but how many other users are zapping (upvoting) and commenting.
The amount of sats in a zap is more like if you want to give a reward together with the upvote.
reply
yes, I noticed this one, most likely after two quality users commented and zapped, then the post ranking is like 🚀 slowly to the front page.

Yeah, but if there's a lot of spam why would I have to pay a lot just to remove spam, doesn't seem like a workable solution.
It makes sense to have this as a common good tax, basically using the revenue obtained through normal posts, etc.

I did indeed upgrade it last night. UX is not up to snuff yet though.

You’re right it’s dependent on your trust level. It’s exactly an upzap in reverse.
Outlawing threshold is kind of arbitrary, but it’s ~5 downzaps from average trusted stackers. It’s like ~2 downzaps from very high trust stackers.
Beyond outlawing, it’s worth downzapping because it severs (meaningfully reduces) trust between you and whoever upzapped it … meaning overtime we’ll all see less of that kind of content on the front page.
At some point I’d like to reward downzappers too. Kind of like rewarding zapping top posts but the reverse - rewards for helping to find the worst stuff.
