I don't mean like... grab their phone and download Phoenix Wallet while spitting ORANGE PILL facts at them!
I mean more of... watching a few videos together and discussing and then ordering an affordable Hard Wallet like Trezor or Jade and then sending them a little and showing them what's happening (mempool, blockexplorer etc)
Or maybe a Book Club?
What are your ideas and advice?
It''s a full and long process. Is not so easy just by opening a wallet and done. That is the wrong approach I think. They must delve first into some "previous" information in order to understand what the fuck is Bitcoin... Here I put together some steps, please pay attention to them, contain a lot of information and links:

I gifted my brother $50 worth in sats and set up a Phoenix wallet for him. Then, whenever we need to even up on birthday/ or mother or Father’s Day gifts, I just use Phoenix. He hasn’t bought any himself (because I still haven’t been able to convince his Keynesian brain that an inflationary monetary supply isn’t needed…but that is another story! So, he is technically off zero!

Afaik Phoenix wallet is bad for stacking

There's an awful lot to dislike about the Bitcoin Standard book (it veers into cultural criticism with extremely sketchy history, just google "degenerate art" to see what I mean).
BUT it is the best structured intro to the problems with money and how bitcoin is the solution.
Based on this, the best orange pill approach is open to conversations about money first and foremost. When people understand the problem with money, they can finally see the solution in Bitcoin. Without this foundation it's too easy to dismiss everything about the project.
As an outline:
  • Discuss the problem with Fiat money
  • Introduce how Bitcoin solves the problems of centralized issuance and debasement
  • Now you're ready to talk where and how to buy sats, perhaps introduce kyc considerations
  • Final step is the importance and practice of self custody

I agree fully. Saifedean often posts distasteful 'hot takes' and namesalls etc on his social media. Doesn't come off well IMO. And the content gets a bit subjective in the book but you're right... they way it's structured tells a strong story.
reply
Saifedean pretends to be toxic, then blocks people who disagree lol.
@real_vijay book or free article is easy to understand
reply
I consider the Vijay article very accessible and the best option. Short read only but introduces you to the basics and can mos def blow minds.

It seems like the easiest on-ramps are switching to Fountain for podcasts, using Zebedee for mobile games, and sMiles as a step counter. Just make a little Bitcoin for doing stuff you were going to do anyway. I'd also encourage them to look into a Fold card, so they can earn some pretty good Bitcoin rewards on all their purchases.
Then gradually nurture their interest as it emerges.
If they're up for a book club or watch party type of thing, though, that would be an awesome place to start.
reply
Interesting. I don't personally like any of the 'games'... but maybe people want a gimmic,
reply
Learning game is one thing...
Let me consider this longer. haha.
reply
I wouldn't recommend starting to play mobile games for the sats. If someone already spends time playing games on their phone, they may as well play Zebedee games.
It also comes with a wallet that connects pretty easily to other apps that earn Bitcoin and it has a social media feature that connects into nostr. Also, they recently introduced taking surveys for sats.
It's a pretty good starting place.

In general I approach the problem of orange pilling someone as explaining fiat money, not bitcoin. I mean the barrier to understanding bitcoin is understanding money in general first. Since almost everybody has some issue with money that they cannot express correctly, I tend to help them do just that. So I don't use bitcoin as a conversation starter, I use money.
As for books, I have high hopes that Lyn Alden's new book, Broken Money, could be just the ticket, as it doesn't have bitcoin on the cover. (I haven't read it yet). :)

  1. fix the money.

I got my wife to watch videos about the history of money and central banking (which is like the appetizer to the orange pill) by offering to buy her a literal crystal ball.
It was a bit tongue and cheek and she was interested in econ anyway, but the fun+incentive made it more tolerable I think.
reply
You’re lucky! Mine tolerates me doing all this bitcoin stuff but could careless about anything economic related from the technical perspective that I enjoy learning about it.
reply
I mean mine isn't much different. It helps to frame it in their own terms sometimes.
My wife is a literal clown so the last time we seriously discussed bitcoin was how it might be used to busk.
reply
my wife: fulltime work and raising 3 kids under 8 > bitcoin
i think people only learn about bitcoin - when they are ready to.
reply
THIS! This is 100% why I posted this. My blindspot.
You've suggested to gamify it and make it FUN with something unrelated that the person is already interested in. Love it!

I might have a good idea to help onboarding the ladies 😂😂 I mean, a better direction is to think about what most women like to do.!
reply
She is literally like in that meme:
  • "honey, let's buy a new sofa"
  • me: no. we don't need a new sofa, we need more sats to save. the old sofa is just fine (I was using the mind trick force here, heheheh)
reply
LOL! I always joke that out of principle a lot of us don't ever want to sell! hahah. "make them all pay!"
reply
Don't get me wrong. I want to spend my sats, but ONLY on things I really need, when is really needed. Not just for the sake of spending.
reply
there we go, and what do women like to buy the most?
reply
EVERYTHING ? Maybe I have the wrong wife ? 😂😂😂😂 But she wants to buy all kind of useless things.
reply
😂 I used to like buying things too, but after I learned about Bitcoin, damn, I need to stop buying useless things! but now I have graduated to make my own things - better quality and more fun.
Just got my new clothes from tailors this evening, and they turned out so good; I'm so going to walk around with my own designs instead of being told what's popular each season.
reply
Tim Draper (Bitcoin super OG) was predicting a Price Pop when women are more able to purchase daily items with Bitcoin and Lightning. His predictions never are accurate but this was his thesis at least based on demographics and purchasing.
Maybe I would share all the processes like how you build your Citadel in a bit, but I am not sure how many people would even think to make clothes themselves because buying is so much easier and even cheaper... not to mention the majority of plebs are male 🥸
reply
Yes! My educational business partner in teaching finance and Bitcoin is a lady and we see a huge disconnect in the % of women in STEM and finance.
Elaborate more for me...
Also Krista from Access Tribe is really honing in on this...
Which videos did you guys watch?
reply
Hidden Secrets of Money is what we started with which was a @Darthcoin recommendation IIRC.
reply
indeed. If you do not know the roots of the money, the roots from where the evil comes, you will never understand the true power of bitcoin.
reply
The only thing you can truly offer to help your friends and family benefit from Bitcoin, it's to make your self available for any question they might have in the future.
It's a personal journey and you cannot force them and everyone has different needs, interests and priorities. Just try to don't dox yourself that much...
reply
Whenever I have hinted to people that I have some knowledge of Bitcoin and they can ask me about it, their only question has been "So do you think the price will go up?"
They're not aware there are other questions to ask.
reply
Yes. I wasn't suggesting to force anyone
reply
I found out that it is pretty hard to help on others even if we are talking about family. Most people are very skeptic and create nonsense thought in their head. Which most of that has nothing to do with reality. I don't get why so hard for many to be open and listen to other and then verify (DYOR) the information.
reply
I have not had much success OP'ing people but my one mate who is a stacker now, dudes a gym bro type, he liked Robert Breedloves stuff, and thats how he got down the rabbit hole
While my other friend who is an engineer preferred Saif's stuff
For the love of Bitcoin podcast, I recommended for my more casual OP'ing and had some success there
Lol, no one wants to read, and even getting them to listen to a poddy is so hard.
But I do think a Book Club is a cool idea, why not a finance club? Everyone put say X amount away and they choose what they want to put it in, and you do your DCA and rek everyone in real time and watch them come around
reply
Among other things, you could also share this link which has an intro to BTC as well as how to earn some sats.. hope it helps https://blog.zbd.gg/zbd-presents-internet-magic-series-vol-1-2/
reply
  1. wait for them to ask you about bitcoin (hopefully before the next halving lol)
  2. let them watch The Internet of Money volume 1 by @aantonop
