When I first learned about Bitcoin in 2013...it's painfully vivid.
Was on the highway inbetween cities on a drive back home with my family. Mid afternoon, watching the grass fly by me outside of my window.
I can't remember why we were talking about real estate at that time, but nonetheless my father was talking about how he heard of this new technology called the "blockchain" that can "intermediate the payments between real estate brokers and home buyers, without any need for the brokerage!"
Bitcoin wasn't even part of this conversation.
It was vague head nods and a "huh, cool! I wonder how that works." "I don't know, but apparently you can use it for any payment, not just real estate." "Hm, the government and banks probably wont allow that though right?" "Yeah, probably, but it's a cool idea!"
-- and then the conversation drifted elsewhere.
Knowing how life is now...sigh..
the only moment I truly remember is 9/11. Which is probably similar for a lot of people here. I was walking from first period to second when the kids in front of me were talking about hearing about a plane crash in NYC. When I got to class the world was different. I was at a military boarding school with people from all over the world.
reply
Yeah this. I was in NY and saw the 2nd plane go into the towers. Visceral.
reply
Other than big moments in my personal life, 9/11 is the only one I can think of too.
reply
9/11, and I'll always remember where I was when my employer announced it was shutting down for COVID.

First blowjob. Will never forget it. Took 3 shots of tequila to get the taste out of my mouth.
For real though it’s when I fully grokked bitcoin- couldn’t sleep for weeks because it hit me so hard.
Saw an article on my phone early January 2020 while scrolling through those crappy recommended ones on the Chrome homepage: China pneumonia outbreak raises spectre of Sars as number infected jumps to 44
Then, when they wanted to quarantine an entire city... Wuhan’s 11 Million People Face Quarantine as Virus Fears Spread ...I remember sitting in camping chair that I used for gaming in front of the TV, thinking about the phrase "Never let a good crisis go to waste"
reply
I remember seeing some early charts and trying to explain to people the significance of an exponential curve. It was clear to me how quickly it was spreading. Everyone else thought I was insane.

no lie i feel like i remember this exact headline too, saw it on my phone while on a walk out in the snow. Had just heard talks of it from a friend recently before then.
I vastly underestimated how large of an ordeal it would grow to become..

I even worked in a science/medical field and couldn't get it through to anyone how big a deal it might be, absolute morons, and with PhDs and Master's degrees.
And then the news finally gets to them, after however much manipulation, and they're down at CVS giving their 3 year old a vaccine that just came off the assembly line.
reply
were other professionals in your field oblivious too or did all of you pretty much get it?
reply
It was a mix of obliviousness, not wanting to offend Chinese people (I remember going to the r/wuhan_flu sub everyday until it was quarantined lol) and just utter disbelief that something big like that could happen, like Normalcy Bias.
Needless to say I was a bit flabbergasted that everyone there was basically just waiting for the news (and W.H.O.) to tell them what to do, and they call themselves scientists.

9/11, Space Shuttle Challenger, & J6.
Which one is a joke? First right answer wins 100 sats

9/11 I was representing a driving while intoxicated client. The courtroom was locked. A guard came out and told me to come in and to send my client home. I then sat with a group of cops, watching the news. We all watched the second plane hit. At that moment, they all leaped up and left, leaving me alone. Frightening. I just wanted to get home to my wife and infant daughter.

The birth of my son. We had a very challenging road of infertility issues and IVF. I felt like Lance Armstrong would injecting my wife with all those drugs.

Congratulations :) paid off more than lance’s efforts….

First broken bone. Fractured my left ankle at 12 requiring 2 screws.
As far as information memories, probably when I was halfway through Atlas Shrugged and realized my model of fairness and governments was all wrong.
I was sitting on a curb outside of SaveMart on my lunch break. I'd keep the copy in my apron often using store receipts as a bookmark. It was spring turning to summer and the days were getting longer but early evenings were still cool and in twilight.

how about the sexy lady behind? If it's your wife then you have to let her know that all of the internet now knows her bum :D
reply
Is that a Dali print?
reply
Good guess!
It's a print of Not Guilty by Jose Manuel Capuletti who apprenticed with Dali.
It's really hard to find his prints, but he did a run in the 1970s and I gambled on this one on Etsy. It appeared like a partial/damaged print but the framer's original tape had just come loose.

A car bomb going off, killing tens and injuring hundreds of people, half a mile from where I was sitting. One tends to remember such moments.
reply
horrible, i can't even imagine. Sorry to hear that

Let me try and counter that with an awesome memory:
Witnessing my first (and only) total solar eclipse. Weeks of planning ahead for the event. A friend even drove all the way out to the "perfect site in a deserted area" to see if we'd be able to camp there from the day before, as the eclipse was to happen early the next morning. (Google Earth wasn't a thing back then, btw.)
On our arrival there a few days later, we discovered the whole area cleared and practically taken over by NASA! We managed to find a spot to set up camp, though.
The eclipse was awesome. Well worth the effort.

I remember that recent one too (2016 was it?)
Didn’t get as good of a view as you sounds like but that was a distinct memory for me too, was a very cool day
reply
Can't remember the exact date, but it must have been at least 20 year ago.
reply
Thanks. The perpetrators also lost their lives in the blast, so there's that...

Berlin Wall and 9/11 for me, was there for both.... I swear these things chase me around...lol

Remind me NEVER to hang out with you o.O

Deal....lol Those things come in threes, and I'm afraid for the next one... gotta get me that cabin in the woods now...

I remember those early days of excitement about how blockchains were going to revolutionize real estate.

Thinking about top ones, guess it's 9/11 (was sitting in Internet cafe [home Internet wasn't common thing yet back then] when news started to arrive) and when Latvian national football team qualified for Euro 2004. Ok, also when my daugther was born, but it was obvious, I was at the hospital.
