Whether you are a new Bitcoiner, or with more or less experience, for sure you have heard or used MUUN wallet at some point. Today I'm going to tell you my experience with that wallet and why I stopped using it.
Some time ago, in a galaxy far far away ...... Ah, no, sorry, that's another topic...
Some time ago, and following the practice of searching and doing my own research, looking on Youtube for the best Bitcoin wallets, I found that many Youtubers were recommending MUUN wallet as "the perfect solution" for Bitcoiners. So I decided to install it and try it out.
The first thing that shocks me is their way of recovering the key seeds, it is not the traditional way, sure you know that it is recovered with 8 combinations of random letters and numbers + a pdf that they provide you, which seemed to me, I do not know, very strange, I was very suspicious about that, because if they tell me that they are self-custody and on the other hand they give me a pdf + email recovery, it sounds not credible, right? I was a bit suspicious about that way of giving us our self custody, but I decided to give them a vote of confidence and start using it (always with small amounts of sats of course).
After 2 months of use apparently everything was going great when in this same year (2023) the news of the ordinals spread in the Bitcoin network. That's when the nightmare began!
When trying to send X amount of sats using the Lightning network (LN) as the service had completely collapsed! Unbelievable as it shouldn't (supposedly) affect the high fees on the main Bitcoin blockchain to LN transactions.
I took it upon myself to investigate further and the discovery is completely unheard of. In short: MUUN uses "submarine swaps" for their LN transactions, this means they are not purely LN, they rely on the mainnet to be able to move sats on LN.
With Onchain transactions it was worse all around. MUUN is supposed to do the conversions from the LN network to Onchain and vice versa, and of course charge its fee for its use, but it should not be as high as the amount it wanted to charge in those days when the Bitcoiner world was in turmoil when transaction fees were over 200 sat/vB.
The agony lasted several days with the service down or under maintenance, luckily I was just testing and didn't have many assets there.
That is my bitter experience with MUUN and why I decided not to use it or recommend it to anyone. I hope my talk was helpful and encourages you to do your own research every time.
Let me know in the comments which Bitcoin and LN wallets you use and your experiences with them, I'll read you and we'll learn together!

You were not the only one having issues with Muun. If more people will read my guides BEFORE starting to use BTC/LN wallets, their life will be much easier.
But yeah people tend to ignore my advice until is too late...

Noticed! πŸ––

I use Phoenix but I haven't tested many wallets. I only used Muun, WoS, BlueWallet and Phoenix so far.
Muun is not good for the reasons you mentioned, WoS is custodial and BlueWallet shut down their lightning service.
I am really happy with Phoenix so far. We also have @ACINQ on here :)

Thanks for your comment. Glad to hear the variety of wallets you use, and even though some with custodials they are still good options for someone starting out with Bitcoin or someone more advanced using them as a bridge to then take it all to OnChain. Phoenix I have only installed it but I have not yet decided to fill the sats channel, when I do I will tell you in another article.

I like Electrum wallet on mobile.
It looks like its from 1998 internet, but it can do all the stuff you need like set the TX fee you want, coin control, and of course open a LN channel.

plus easy on-chain/LN swaps!

Here are the wallets I use:
  • Blink
  • WOS ( might stop using this due to privacy concerns)
  • LN Tipbot: using it for Nostr only.
These are all custodial wallets, and I don't put much sats there.
  • Blixt
A really powerful node in your phone, works almost the same as a home node.
  • Zeus LN
a. Managing my Umbrel node with it b. Testing with the new LND node atm
  • Blue wallet
I use it for on-chain funds and watch only.
reply
I’d also recommend trying nunchuk over blue wallet (iOS & Android). It uses standard descriptor wallets which make it a great multisig watch only setup imho
I use Zeus for LN
reply
Thank you so much for responding! Awesome list of Wallets and options.

blixtwallet is custodial?
reply
yes, but it's the easiest LN wallet for beginners.
reply
Blixt is non-custodial, Blink is custodial.
reply
sorry, Yes - Blixt is non-custodial, Blink is custodial.
I missreaded the name earlier, just realized how similar the names are πŸ˜‚

I'm sorry, it is very much non-custodial. And you are not the first I have seen post the opposite. It is non-custodial, has the node on the phone, and is quite advanced actually.

Nice write up, thanks for sharing the knowledge and tips! I was on Blue wallet until i could no longer use it and had an exodus wallet so I moved there. But they shit coin, I need a better lightning wallet
reply
Thank you for your response! Blue Wallet has indeed been discontinued by many colleagues. Here in the comments they recommended Phoenix Wallet as an autocustody and that it is only for Lightning. Try it when you can and let us know how it went and your experience with the wallet.
reply
Yup just switched to Phoenix and love it! Took some work to learn about liquidity as it’s non custodial, but I’ve got it down now!
reply
Is phoenix the most recommended node on a phone without having your own node?
Has anyone had bad experiences with it?
reply
Thanks for your comment. As I said in another reply, I have only installed Phoenix but I have not yet decided to fill the sats channel, when I do I will tell you. So far what I have heard from other Bitcoiners is that yes, it works very well, although sometimes to open the channels the fees are somewhat high.
reply
They charge 1k sats when you first open a channel, and after that only charge mining fees if channel management is required. I think that's pretty reasonable.
reply
They do charge 0.4% for every send. I find it a bit expensive, but it works very well.
reply
Ok, thanks for letting me know πŸ––
reply
Well, if so, it is quite reasonable. I'm going to try it these days! Thanks for the tip my friend!

There is no "we"

The wallet works on a low fee environment but is horrible when on chain fees are high. Not a real lightning wallet, as relies on submarine swaps. Use Phoenix or Blixt if you want a "node on the phone" wallet. Or use Zeus if you run your own lightning node.
reply
Perfect those Wallet options you propose. Thank you very much!
reply
I think this was to be expected sooner or later. I used Muun for a while but it was known that their model would not last long under a high fee environment. I am using Phoenix now, but opening new channels to get more inbound capacity is expensive, so many transactions do not work. Not sure if this kind of wallets (I mean, LN non-custodial wallets) will fix it soon. Perhaps some kind of swaps with Liquid would help.
reply
The issue of fees is sometimes a bit disappointing in any wallet, that's why many people go with custodials.

Here's a nice post I just found to compare some self-custodial alternatives:

I agree with your overall sentiment but Muun is useful for securing your maker bond on RoboSats so that is one useful featur.
It can also be deleted with a couple of button taps so it makes for a nice burner wallet in some cases.
reply
I understand, the convenience it offers is incredible, but there is the issue that it is not a native LN and it fails when fees are high.
reply
There is no fee when using it to secure your maker bond on RoboSats. You initiate a payment and it is canceled when you complete your order or it expires after 24 hours.

but you can easily use other LN wallets for this.

I am aware that other wallets work but which wallets are you thinking of specifically?

What wallet are you thinking of? Can you provide me and the rest of this thread with the wallets that you are talking about? Also, when you say "custodial wallets", do you actually mean "non-custodial wallets"?
reply
I use Strike and Wallet of Satoshi most times at occassionally, CWallet. Never experienced any failures with these.
reply
With those wallets it doesn't happen because they are LN natives.
reply
Still have a few thousand sats stranded there. Determining if it's worth it rn to get it out :/
reply
Wait for the fees to go down and see if you can get them out of there.

Let's hope 🀞
I got into bitcoin while we were in a 1 sat/vB environment and learned too late that muun was unsustainable. At least it was a small burn

Jan good open source wallet is the Green wallet or samurai wallet but these don't have lightning network. For lightning network I recommend the phoenix
reply
Thank you very much for your response. Samourai is the best for Bitcoin Only. I will talk about it later.
reply
yeah, i've been using muun a bit. during high fee environment it's definitely awful experience. i would like to switch but muun is the easiest and quickest way i know to switch on chain sats to lightning network (sending to a LN wallet). i don't like keeping too many sats on a ln wallet.
i know there are swap services but there are more steps involved.
prob need to find an alternative.

Thanks for your response my friend. It's good to see the individual points of view and experiences of each person. In these days I'm going to do a write up on how to pass Bitcoin Onchain and vice versa as cheaply and quickly as possible, the way I do it. Stay tuned.πŸ––πŸ€“βš‘
