Linux users continue to be ignored by Proton, with the company opting instead to develop new AI features on Proton Mail that nobody needs, and a new Bitcoin Wallet that no one with 2 brain cells will use.
Why bother implementing end-to-end encryption across all Proton apps if the operating system they run on will screenshot the emails, calendar, files, browser history, and employ AI to snoop through everything, then send it to Big Brother's Microsoft/Apple servers? It's utterly absurd.
Linux should be the top priority for Proton.
I feel ya, but at the same time Proton is a business first. I imagine the vast majority of their paying customers so not run Linux. They do probably have more Linux users than most companies but my guess is it's still the minority.
Why do I think this? Because Linux is a small sliver of the Desktop OS userbase. Because they are a business, if this decision is a mistake they will suffer.

Linux market share continues to rise, now at 4.45%, which is the highest ever. This figure likely underestimates the true extent of Linux usage, as many users modify their user agent for privacy reasons.
Building privacy/security apps on top of spyware operating systems is pointless, it's inherently contradictory.
reply
You get what I'm saying right. I am not disagreeing with you. Windows is a spyware platform. Linux is rising in usage. As it does we that use it will get more attention. This is just how markets and incentives work.

you can use it with thunderbird

Mind blown that the solution would be to use another app. πŸ˜„

Exactly. Or open in Browser. I don't see a reason to be whining here

How do you access your emails or calendar while offline? You can't. It's absurd that I need to open a browser just to check my calendar. But the worst offender is Proton Drive because there's no Linux support, and using the browser webapp to manage files is ridiculous.

And on top of all of that you can't even pay with Lightning!

It's been 6 years since this feature was first requested (https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/935538-accounts-payments/suggestions/33659026-lightning-network-bitcoin-payment-option), and unfortunately, we've seen radio silence from Proton on this.

Works fine on my brave browser running pop os?

We need proper native desktop apps. Having to open my browser just to check the calendar or access files is absurd.

Wait I am confused I do see a Deb and rpm file for Linux? https://m.stacker.news/43278 Is it the full suite that isn't available?
reply
Have you tried it? Spoiler: it's garbage. It feels like a web app pretending to be a native app. It takes 5 seconds to launch, and there's no offline support - so it's just the same as using a browser... useless.
reply
I have not and I just use a browser anyway. So I do see your point. Yea alot of companies are going the way of the browser apps. Which is unfortunate. Granted I was thinking of subscribing . But I atm I just run a home network with nextcloud and other services for connecting externally I use zerotier on occasion. But alot of stuff I am ok with just connecting and syncing when I am at home.

The proton bridge app sucks, I uninstalled it and am only using proton on my phone. Wouldn't have paid for proton tbh if I had known this.
How are Linux users ignored? I actually can't get it from the post.

The Proton VPN Linux app is completely garbage compared to Windows/Android apps. Furthermore, there's no Proton Drive integration on Linux (in contrast to Windows), which means we can't access our files through the file managerβ€”our only option is to open the browser...
Linux support for Proton Drive is the #2 most requested feature among user community votes on their site.
reply
Don't forget the mobile app removing Random server support, thus making anonymous VPN usage completely fucking useless unless you go in and change the server every single time.
Proton has been on a disappointment streak as of late, and I can't for the life of me figure out why they've decided on dropping the ball so hard.
reply
Maybe they want to "appear secure".
reply
Proton Drive years later continues with no Linux support, dispite it being the second most requested feature (as voted by the users).
reply
Most Linux users are security-conscious.

Left Proton a few years ago and couldn't be happier - why keep "spoon feeding " me more services when ALL I need a secured email...

What are you using for secure email and vpn?

Tuta and Mullvad

Hmm, what about storage?
reply
you mean cloud storage? I don't use any.

I use cloud (Proton) as a backup only, in case SHTF. I'm curious, what do you use to synchronize your files, notes, and media across your phone, laptop, and tablet (if applicable)?
I'm using Syncthing, which runs locally and seems to be working well. In the past, I used Nextcloud for about two years but ended up switching because I found Syncthing to be a simpler and safer solution.
reply
I don't really trust Proton or any clouds, I also tried Nextcloud before, but then I realized that I don't have so many things that need to be synced across laptop or phone.
I'm curious, what do you use to synchronize your files, notes, and media across your phone, laptop, and tablet (if applicable)?
files & media: USB with veracrypt notes: Standard note and physical notebooks

Yes, as far as I know, very few people use Linux anymore, let alone wallets that usually use Linux. In the past, I often watched several tutorials on using Linux wallets, it seemed suitable to discuss how to use Linux to store Sats from Stacker.
