Interrupting the ordinary MONEY CLASS programming on ~econ (#733580, #737272, etc) for urgent reporting on a stupid mistake.
Possibly, a decent candidate for ~spirituality, too.

I wake up early. Body feels good after yesterday's long walk and tough abs workout. Get to the kitchen, start doing the morning routines: prep some small piece of meat, grind coffee beans, do some stretches, listen to podcasts.
I feel happy. Giggly, even. Day progresses, and I get some reading done and prepare the day's work. At 10 am or so girlfriend joins me, and she remarks on how unusually happy I am. Nothing special, I say; just feel good. It's our last day before I'm going on a five-day trip.
It was, of course, too good to be true.
About two hours later the universe knocked me down a peg or two.
"Where is my passport?"
Fuck. It dawns on my that I never packed it from home. Never occurred to me. And thanks to the megalomanic overlords ruling our lives, I must have this piece of gov-stamped paper to pass the gatekeepers.
I rummage through my bags and my piles of things at her place. Nothing. I call a friend from home who, luckily had his day off and wasn't doing anything so he could go over and check whether I indeed had this piece of expensive government membership card at home. Yup, laying there in my drawer, precisely where I had stupidly left it.
Can I used the old one (that technically hasn't expired yet)? Can I go through the machines anyway? Can I use a drivers' license?
After a few googlings and calls to the embassy -- and consulting the Wisdom of Dad who, busy painting the walls in my sister's apartment, laughed at me for such a rookie mistake -- later I learn that the answers to these questions are big fat "NOs!"
My flight is tomorrow morning.
Only solution? Borrow girlfriend's car, drive the 4-5 hours to my house just to turn around and drive that same distance back again. I can think of a hundred better ways to spend 100,000 sats in gas and an entire day.
So yea guys, enjoy the ridicule, I hope you got a good laugh out of this -- and if you pitty my unbelievably stupid mistake, feel free to zap to help out with the gas fund.
If not, maybe there's a recent podcast episode you could recommend?

Now, your turn: tell us about some mindlessly stupid thing you did recently that cost you a lot.
Not that recently, but missing a flight due to heading to the wrong airport is similar to your adventure. A whole citytrip down the drain and ridicule from friends.
Getting robbed of my passport while sleeping at the airport is another one.
Not realizing from the beginning I'd keep the ~science territory... this has cost me 10 months of monthly billing already, while I could have already paid of nearly 1/3 of the lifetime billing with it, i.e. 1 million sats. It's for the good cause, so not feeling bad about it either. I wasn't sure either 1 year ago I'd still be around.
reply
ooouwww man, yea I can FEEL your pain, that's for sure.
Also, who robs people at airports?! The place is littered with sec cameras

My memory lapses from time to time and I tend to forget things that are right in front of me. That has led to a lot of situations but the last one I remember I went to buy something in a grocery that's right in front of my house while I was coming back from somewhere so I was in my bike. I locked it outside, bought something, and absolutely erased any trace of existence of my bike from my mind for two days. I keep my bike right in front of my bed for I live in a very small apartment, so I had that chance to notice the elephant was not anymore in the room, yet for two days it stopped to exist. It could have been weeks, but thankfully I needed my bike for another reason so by muscular memory my hand tried to grasp something that wasn't there anymore and then and only then I was able to make synapsis again: there was a bike. Ok, good, first step! Well done champ... Now the second problem was that I had absolutely no record of where the bike could be. I spent the entire day lurking blindly through the unfathomable halls of my memory until the lost memory crossed me by sheer accident and I had the second synapsis: the grocery store! I was deeply agraciated by the fact it survived so long in the open unscathed, for this is not a safe zone.
I have made the habit of always being one step ahead of my own stupidity. Many times future me has thanked past me for taking pre-emptive measures.

I have a travel related one, too.
The first time my wife and I went on a cruise, we flew in the morning of boarding. Of course, our flight was delayed, which almost led to us missing boarding and did lead to us not having our luggage for the first three days of our vacation.
reply
fantastic, I'm so sorry!

Live and learn. Now we enjoy a couple days at our port of call before and after the cruise.

My stupidest thing was to believe someone to enter a college for regular course ans wasted my 3 years before dropping out.

My stupidest mistakes in life have always been relating to taking things or people for granted.

Yep, that’s a good umbrella description that fits for me as well

A friend and I decided to go see an outdoor concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center 2 or 3 years ago. Unfortunately, his dog died the day before so he wasn't up for going. We tried to find someone else to use his ticket, but no luck on short notice. Even though it was a long drive, I decided to go alone. The woodsy park where the concert venue is located probably has 20 different parking lots spread throughout the acreage. I forgot to check what lot I parked in. After the show ended around midnight, I trudged along in complete darkness along with younger, spacier, altered patrons wandering through the woods. It was surreal. I am an old guy who needs his meds. I wasn't alone. It seemed as if everyone was lost. People just sat down and started crying. It was getting late. I walked over to a cop car and explained my situation. The nice officer drove me around for over two hours trying to find my car. At one point I told him I felt bad putting him through this, and he said "don't worry about it, I'm on overtime." Gotta love civil servants at times like these. By the time I found the car the sun was coming up. I should not have:
  1. Gone to the concert alone
  2. Forgotten where I had parked
  3. Left my meds in the car
reply
FUUUUCK, that's soooooo crazy... typical too, because whooo pays attention to which parking lot they park at, really??

You’re not paranoid if it does happen sometimes!

Honestly, I only have one real big regret in my life. When I was 16, I started smoking, and spent the next 15 or so years smoking roughly a pack a day.
I quit over a decade ago now, but I hate to think about the years I've taken off my life.
There's no financial mistake I've made (and there's been a ton) really holds a candle to that for me.

You’re a fool of course if you don’t listen to the Trump Joe Rogan podcast. Sounds like u have 3 hours! Just great to get a sense of him that breaks thru the noise
Sounds like you’re in a long distance relationship. Which makes sense until I remember where you live! How big is that place?!
I try so hard not to step on my own Rakes, but yea changing a newborn baby boy’s diaper too slowly can result in a golden shower 😭😭

decently big: the size of Pennsylvania, give or take -- with winding freaking roads, and a ton of nasty weather

I just learned it’s possible in CA to vote in person, early!

you can also request a ballot in a foreign language in case English is your 'second' language

I voted against all the props except for 36
Prop 36 will actually arrest and prosecute smash and grab, stealing, etc
Definitely vote early, don't wait until Nov 5
Voting early is BS but we have to take advantage of the 'rules'

I particularly like your questioning of needing passports and such. Isn't it such an odd thing to request from a person?
You need to show proof that you are who you say you are and we take that piece of paper that we will trust, but we will not trust you.
Seems to me that passports should be sued when one decides to commit crimes overseas.

Once, I think in 1997, 3 friends and I decided to go to the beach, at the house of the older brother of one of these 3 friends. The older brother was already there to welcome us, so we hurriedly packed our bags and went to the bus station, but when we got there, it was crowded! I was the smallest among them, and I must admit... I jumped the queue and managed to buy the 4 tickets, but I bought it for the wrong beach which was more or less 10km closer to our destination. We drank on the bus and became completely drunk. When we got there, as it was a small coastal town, there were no buses to get us to the right beach. So... we waited there until dawn or walked. What do you think we did? We walked, but my friend started to feel sick because he was so drunk... we were in the middle of nowhere, in the early hours of the morning, we didn't know what to do, so we stopped so he could rest. He slept and woke up better, thank God. We waited for dawn and took the bus

There has been lot of them. I have played the fool frequently all my life. It's amazing I am still here. If I had to choose one, because there are LOT... it would have to be the silly mistake I made of believing there are mistakes. Now I see every experience as a lesson. The best I can anyways. After all, we all make mistakes. 💚

It would be easier and far less to write sharing examples where I didn't make silly mistakes.

Hahaha your story is very particular, I'll tell you mine once when I was 10 years old I slept with my mother upstairs (the third floor) and when I woke up I had to go to school but my backpack 🎒 was downstairs ⬇️ where my grandmother lived, it turns out that instead of taking the key 🔑 to look for my backpack I had taken the ones in the garage and had already closed the door on the upper floor (Of course I was half asleep) which had left me practically outside of both houses and unable to go to school. Luckily my grandmother went out to buy bread, noticed and gave me my backpack.
