I know a few non profits that I'd like to support but I'm interested in donating them sats and not fiat. I plan on instructing them to download lightning enabled bitcoin wallets and donating to them that way. So two questions:
  1. Which wallet is the most "newb friendly"? A wallet that's idiot proof i.e. handles channel management automatically for the user, is easy to secure, with a friendly UI and will attend to keeping fees low? (custodial or not is secondary importance)
  2. What's realistically the highest amount that can be transferred from one lightning wallet to the other, considering the state of channel capacities? E.g. would using an Acinq wallet enable the user to accept higher amounts?

Thanks. Submarine swaps seem interesting (I saw Alex bosworth post about it a couple of years back and it intrigued me but never delved into it). Looking forward to learning more...
reply
But remember: submarine swaps must be used only to regulate your own liquidity, not as usual payments. Submarine swaps are mostly used to refill drained LN channels. Is better to keep open a LN channel as long is possible.

  1. https://coinos.io/ is an custodial option that is super low friction.
  2. Lighting capacity is more mature then it was years ago. I doubt you will have a capacity issue. How much is the nonprofit wanting to bring in?
Also if it is a large amount, do an onchain transaction.

big fan of coin OS

I second this.

Coinos is really good.

Checking out coinos.io. thanks!

For noobs I would stick with custodial, the following are pretty solid:
  • Fedi
  • Wallet of Satoshi
  • Coin OS
For larger (onchain) amounts, Phoenix, due to their splicing feature
reply
Thanks. Looking into those options 👍👍 What's the "splicing feature" on one leg?
reply
For most self-custodial lightning wallets, every new channel is a separate thing (so a big lightning payment would have to be split into multiple smaller ones depending on each channels capacity)
With splicing, you can increase or decrease a single channel with each on-chain tx
This means you can always spend your entire balance (more or less) in one payment.

I would recommend AQUA as the best newb friendly wallet that allows the most seamless way of holding both on-chain and LN and swapping between.

CoinOS is also beginner friendly and supports on chain, LN and Liquid and eCash
reply
Nope. Is not Bitcoin. is just a garbage.

Why don't people talk about mercury more? I rarely hear it mentioned
reply
Because mercury didn't come out before LN. If would be already a usable thing in 2017-2018 or even 2019, maybe would have some traction. But now that LN took the place, is not interesting anymore and slowly will be forgotten. Why? Because LN is getting better and better every month. All other so called "solutions to scale" failed to appear when were needed.

I still can't find one uber driver or taxi driver who knows what a 'lightning' wallet is. What are they waiting for?
I personally think lightning is amazing... and I also believe it's easy to use overall with a little education and patience - however it's hard to 'get people there' unless they are natively interested in Bitcoin.
All these tools, wallets, apps, resources... they're great but do someone no good if they don't want to do the hard work and study why Bitcoin is special and how to use it. It's kind of a huge mystery
There's ONLY one L2: LN All the rest are garbage promises. Especially Liquid that is NOT a L2.

Naah, just noobies.

Prepare to lose them the moment you have to explain them that they need to pay money to receive money ("but just the first time lol")

How much we talking about?

I've been through that exact path just a few days ago! I'll dm you a couple of mails I exchanged with the magic grants foundation, you'll see that it's not just about the ease of use.

I feel that the Blink wallet is a great option.
Sometimes the transaction fee for WoS is ridiculously high; that’s why I stopped using it.
