SN recently improved its search functionality (#917048), but we also want to create a test set of search examples to use in future testing. Thus, I'm requesting your input to help us create this test set.

I'll zap 1000 sats to every post telling us about your search queries in the requested format. You can do it multiple times! Maximum 3 per stacker though. And I may cut off the bounty if I feel that enough data has been obtained (or if I run out of sats keke)

InstructionsInstructions

Think of a post or comment on SN where you kind of remember the details but not really. Then try to search for it, and tell us the following:

  1. Target: Describe the post you were looking for.
  2. Search query: What search query did you use, and what sorts and filters? If you had to use multiple queries to find it, tell us each query you used, and which query ultimately found the post.
  3. Result: Comment on how the overall search experience went. Did you find it quickly? Any issues you ran into? If you found the post, include the link.

ExamplesExamples

Target: @SimpleStacker's pleb economist on the gartner hype cycle.

Search query: @SimpleStacker pleb economist hype cycle. Default filters and sort.

Result: I found the post as the first hit. #909279

Target: One of @denlillaapan's posts on Eugene Fama, where it had a copy pasted image of a quote that Fama once said about Bitcoin

Search query: @denlillaapan eugene fama. Default filters and sort.

Result: I found it on the first page of the search, about the 4th item. I had to click through a few because I didn't remember the exact one and @denlillaapan wrote about Eugene Fama multiple times. The post title didn't actually have the words "Eugene Fama" in it. I also misspelled @denlillaapan a few times, so autocomplete on the search bar might be nice! #862916

Target: A recent post about bitcoin on Mars (I forgot who posted it)

Search query: bitcoin mars. Default filters and sort

Result: First hit. #912199
1,000 sats paid 13 times
SimpleStacker's bounties

Target: Assmilking. thought I would look for the post where the author explained how it has come about. Forgot who wrote it

Search query: as attached

Result: found it. Post #11. Scoresby wrote it

reply

Can you also link the specific post/item you were looking for?

reply
reply

Thanks! Oh, and I didn't see it at #11 when I searched "Assmilking" as you did above. Did you try a different search query or a different filter/sort to find it?

reply

NVM, I did find it after all.

note to self: the search query was Assmilking without quotes

the screenshot has quotes but they don't look like the regular quotes that would trigger a phrase-match search

reply

I have no idea what you are talking about haha

I don’t know if this is useful but I never thought about the purpose of these descriptions:

it took a direct interaction with @koob 1-1.5 years after I came here for me to realise that these descriptions are meant for people to find what they need.

I think my ignorance arose from the fact that I didn’t know what nym meant, so i never thought the descriptions were relevant for me

reply

It's kind of a technicality

If you search for something inside double quotes "<query>", i.e. "Assmilking", then the search algorithm will look for that exact word or phrase inside the quotes.

If you search without quotes, approximate and semantic matches are also retrieved.

However, your quotes are kinda slanted, which I think is not the same ascii character as the regular double quotes. It may be due to regional differences in keyboard design. So your search didn't actually get processed by the algo as an exact-match search.

That's why it retrieved the post you were looking for, which actually reads "ass-milking" and not "assmilking"... slightly different, and wouldn't be retrieved if you searched with double quotes!

Like I said, pretty technical...

reply

It warms my heart that I was (indirectly) able to aid in the technical betterment of SN with this post. Thank you.

You must be a good teacher because I understood the gist of what you were saying despite having no technical background. Thanks for taking the time!

Target: Zeus Wallet restore Search Query: posts by relevance Results: decent results by people who has issues similar to me. Ie I can’t access my sats on chain.

reply

Could you link one or more of them that you would consider successful hits?

reply

#472149

This was the second result. It is for the first round. The other results were for the third and second round. They would be the same type of post so I won't link all 3.

reply

Haha you responded in the wrong place but I'll give you the bounty

reply

That's odd. I clicked on your comment in my notifications and it took me here. I thought I was responding to you responding to me. Maybe when I went to the link and came back I replied to the wrong one.

reply

Yeah weird, there were two extremely similar comments from me asking for the same thing from different people

reply

I just edited my comment. I think it took me to the correct comment when I clicked it but when I went to get the link and came back it took me to the last comment and since it was the same I just replied. Probably was my error after all.

reply

Wow thanks, forward, let’s go!!!!

reply

Thanks for working on search.

The FORMAT of the search result output is hard to read.

I searched for @signal312 carnviore

  • The word that you're searching for is highlighted, everywhere. If it's a somewhat common word, it's a confusing read
  • The excessively bold highlighting of the search term obscures the difference between the different results. It's hard to tell where one starts, and the other begins
  • The title of the post is in a pale gray. It's hard to see, and distinguish between them.
  • The title is AFTER things that are less important. Like the sats, number of replies. Maybe those would be better on the next line, in a smaller font
  • it's not possible (or is it?) to be able to tell whether the search term shows up in a post, or a comment. Would be nice if you could.
  • Also - it doesn't look like search finds everything. I searched for this: @signal312 carnviore ... and it didn't find the article #335229. And I think more were missing.
reply

How did you eventually find the post (#335229)?

reply

I had it on a personal list, I was keeping track of some of my posts.

reply

Also one more thing - maybe you could limit (in the search results) how many lines you show, for each result? Instead of showing EVERY single time where the target word shows up?

The way it is now, the results are hard to visually parse. This is probably also because the title is so hard to distinguish from the rest of the results.

And then somehow giving an indication, visually, of whether the search result is in the actual post, or in a comment.

reply

I agree with your feedback on the ui/ux of search. Will open a github issue.

reply

Thanks.

One more thing...wouldn't it be cool to have a few more options in "advanced search" ?

The option would be ~PostOnly and ~CommentOnly. To be able to distinguish between the two in the search results.

Okay, just one more thing - the font that the word Filters is written in, in the above screenshot, is actively working against understandability. Maybe switch it out with something else.

It definitely has improved. I didn't have last year's March Madness Survivor Pool bookmarked and I wanted to review what we did before I rolled out this year's contest so I just searched March Madness Pool and the top 3 results were posts of various rounds of last year's pool.

Target: Darth's comment on a recent post on inheritance (this one: #926641).

search query: proof of work inheritance

result: mostly a bunch of posts from 2023 and 2024. the right thread doesn't even come up on the first try (my error, Darth's comment said "PoW" not "proof of work"... and when I searched for that it's the first hit)

I had to scroll through my own comments on various posts to even find the thread; very cumbersome

reply

Note to self: The target item was this #926649 and the successful search query was pow inheritance

Target: A post from at least a year or two ago. The poster had made some cool front end stuff showcasing different primitives in lightning and links to various tools

Search query: "Lightning tools". After some waiting for the yellow bar up top to finish loading, I got "empty" as the result.

Result: The end result was that I was unable to find the post using the search term "lightning tools".

Could I ask you to try again? Search was down this morning.

I would like to find the item because knowing the actual target (even if you couldn't find it) is an important part of constructing the test data.

Best I can say it was similar, but I don't think it was this exact post

Search is improved, but I think it still need "training". I tried to search specific terms from my own posts ( because I know what I wrote and also I am one with the biggest number in posts, comments and guides, so will hve more chances to find). But unfortunately is not finding correctly.

Yep this data collection is so that we can have at least a small training/testing dataset for future search improvements.

I search stuff like e.g.

darthcoin lightning guide

It doesn't return the posts and comments I expect. Because the posts and comments don't contain the words like that. But a Google search would work like that.

Or maybe it's my fault for being too normiebrained 🤷🏻‍♀️
