the new 'upgrade' of macbook and macbook pro called 'ventura' restricts you as a user:
after the upgrade completes, it deletes your bitcoin core entry in the dock; also other entries like electrum.
you can restore those entries by going to the application folder and clicking on the bitcoin core or other apps and they will open, but you cannot install an upgrade like bitcoin core 25. it will refuse to install. on the previous distro you had to open settings/security and create an exception for the installation of non-apple software. with the new distro ventura you need to execute this terminal command: sudo spctl --master-disable
then you can go to settings/security and choose installation of all software. standard is now that you can only install software from apple or allowed by apple.
it started with the iphone which became a spiphone many years ago. users could 'jailbreak' the iphone and enjoy their freedom as the name says. for many years now apple has made a 'jailbreak' impossible. spiphone owners get traced and tracked without any possibility of stopping it and they can only install software on the phone which is approved by big brother apple.
it looks like the new complicated way of enabling free software installation on the mac is the first step of making free software on a mac impossible to install. i would not be surprised if there will be a permanent block of installing free software on a mac in the next release. as we know, apple hates free software.
i like the macbook pro for the sturdy built and even for the functions. having said that, linux is superior because it is foss and it can do the same as the mac. i wish that linux could run smoothly on a mac. i know that older macs are capable of it but not the modern m1 or m2 macbook pros. therefore i will max the useage of the macbook out, use it as long as possible, will try not to upgrade and when it becomes obsolete, i will migrate back to linux.
Might be worth keeping an old bootable version of MacOS X handy... ...or better still wipe and reformat as Ubuntu, when they inevitably force-upgrade more recent versions.
Remember the latest MacOS will automatically install "security updates only". Soon there won't be the ability to override in the UI (currently hidden) and this will extend beyond minor updates to major ones. What constitutes a security update is changing by the day. Just read the latest legislation out of the UK.

If you're on the fence and want to get your feet wet with what Ubuntu feels like on Mac...it's so easy to create a partition.
Disk Utility makes it really easy to create one. This video is a great overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIgxEEzT9ek

It makes no sense... really? Can you not install Linux on M1 and M2 machines? Sound's weird... they had the bitcoin paper hidden on their OS since forever, unknowingly spreading the orange...
reply
Yes you can install Asahi Linux

We as bitcoiners should be thinking in migrating to other os like guix/nix os. Creating demand for bitcoin company/developers what he user wants/needs

What? I have Ventura 13.5 on intel macbook, I was able to install Bitcoin Core v.25.0.0, it works no problem. I don't know about the system upgrade process, this indeed sometimes brakes some stuff like you say e.g. "disappear" app shortcuts from the dock but I highly doubt they specifically target Bitcoin Core.
reply
I think there's a difference on how you install it.
I have seen Bitcoin Core simply disappear from macOS. Not sure what happened, but it was all gone. This was using the "normal" installer.
When I tried simply downloading the console app, it stayed fine.

linux > apple > windows
graphene phone and qubes desktop is the best combo imho
reply
Linux/BSD on computer, and GrapheneOS on mobile is pretty much the only way to have full control of your own devices.
I think in the future hardware vendors will start to remove the possibility to run alternative OSs, and that's when we will need some kind of open source hardware. RISC-V has a lot of potential.

Apple = Big Goverment. That's what the Epic Games company was warning us about when they show that ad.

I don't think I've seen that ad, but sounds interesting.
Do you have a link to watch it?

Thanks, powerful stuff.
Here's the original ad in case someone hasn't seen it.

Here is the other ad from Epic Games that refence the original Apple ad link on Youtube

Too many professionals use MacBook to run free software.
This is FUD.

Google uses macs for their devs, so no chances of that happening.

Apple = monopoly Monopoly = control Control = no privacy I might be wrong, I hope I am lol

Using apple products while also using bitcoin takes some cognitive dissonance to begin with, I think.

Hardware still not fully supported but they are making huge improvements.

No more apple for me too
They have taken enough of my money

Mainstream OSs like Windows and macOS are getting more restrictive in every iteration.
They make it really difficult to create a local account only, and they are restricting more and more the applications you can run in them.
And it's all because of your "security". Seems like the real world is slowly getting into the OS, you know?, all this erosion of privacy from governments, because of your "security"...
At least we still can run open source OSs like Linux , BSD, etc, but I can see that at some point they will make the hardware locked to the mainstream OSs.
I wonder if using a RISC-V CPU, the open source instruction set, would be actually a good way out of this nightmare.
reply
Are they specifically targeting Bitcoin or are they restricting everything that doesn't go through the app store?
Either way, fuck Apple
reply
Everything by the sound of it. If we want to be cynical, it seems like they are slowly boiling the frog until the desktop OS is as locked down as iOS. If they keep going they will kill the Mac's Silicon Valley demo. Most SV tech folk I know use Macs.
reply
FWIW the M-series SoC architecture was very well designed to allow running other OSes (like Asahi Linux) so if anything they're shooting themselves in the foot by making MacOS less usable
reply
I wasn't aware! I haven't recently attempted an alternative OS boot.
That'll probably be what I do if this slope ends up any slipperier. Their hardware is just so good imho.

I strongly recommend trying Linux out on a second computer (e.g. a used Apple laptop) before trying it on your main Apple computer. That way, you can comfortably hammer out any hardware/driver issues and experiment with Linux -- while still being able to do work with your main computer.
reply
As long as the bootloader does not break, which is highly likely, you can have both OSs on your main computer and progressively boot into Linux as you feel more comfortable.
If you're running on M1/M2 I believe the only option atm is Asahi who are developing all drivers for these specific models, so you won't be hammering out driver issues, instead you will be waiting for support: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Feature-Support

Same here. MacBooks are very common in this industry.

I don't trust proprietary software with any more value than the license fee, hence effectively have no use for Windows or Mac with Bitcoin.

plot twist: bitcoin's security would improve if core devs could get apple to sign their release

FUD.
This is a security feature and has nothing to do with Bitcoin. As you described it, it can be turned off. Why are you complaining?

I remember having problems also while installing Bisq. I had to enter sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Bisq.app in the Terminal in order to solve the error "Bisq is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash."

I'll just leave this article here as well:
Basically, you are having less and less control over your own device.

MacOS is not being crypto friendly.
I am not surprised. I'd stick with linux or windows. If you do media on MacOS-only software, keep a separate Mac for that purpose.
Apple is a waste of time; some bent unix system pretending not to be a computer using authoritarian rules on how you can maintain your own system/s.

going from apple to windows is a weird move
