pull down to refresh

I noticed myself spending more and more time on Stacker News lately, as this is one of the most refreshing sites I have found, and I would like to share what I have learned after hanging around for a while - sharing is caring.

⚡️ Starting with The Basics

How to create and safeguard the account

It is as simple as using an e-mail address or scan with an LN wallet to register, and I linked my account to both e-mail and LN wallet ( I am using Blue Wallet for it ) in case something happens to anyone of them, just need to make sure I do not lose this account.
Freedom comes from self-responsibility, even in small things.

How to start posting

Your first post is generally your bio, take some time to think of a good bio. And be aware here have quite some toxic Bitcoiners who can smell BS miles away. ! Imagine your first post is like the first impression when you make new friends. And choose the user ID you like, something easy to remember, like how you prefer your friend to call you.

How to post content

There are generally two options: sharing links or your thoughts; hidden options are posting a poll, bounty or job.
1. Sending interesting links
Posting links is encouraged, as It's a news site. But sharing scammy links or creating noise would be flagged. However, sharing links to your content or unpopular gems is great.
2. Writing as proof of work
Writing original and useful content might be one of the best proofs of work since the internet is full of junk. SN uses markdown format for long-form posts. Maybe it would be a bit confusing for anyone unfamiliar with it. I recommend using a markdown editor, so you do not need to bother with the formats but focus on the writing only. I use a markdown writing tool called Typora, clean, minimalist and livepreview available.
Some extra thinking: I noticed myself occasionally searching on SN before hitting any search engine. Is this what the web of trust means? Once I found something related to my search, I would click on the profile to have a look, too.
-. Is this person a bot? -. How much did he/she stacked -. Quality of history posts&comments
As SN is still in its baby stage, I think it might end up being more than that, as this is the first time I can focus on writing and providing value to others without dealing with many annoying middlemen or things like running a paid group or selling subscription, but focusing on creating itself, which is pure joy for me!
Also, one more personal observation: most links' lifespan is generally 24 hours here. If you are a content creator, you might want to get some traffic and sats whenever you post, but side note: personally I wouldn't risk clicking any links from a random person if his/ her profile is EMPTY and has 0 history, especially when there is 0 common. It is fine to post links once you have earned your trust.
However, I prefer to do one extra step by copy and paste from markdown to SN instead of just sharing a link, not only to create a better reading experience for fellow stackers but also to make it easier for later discovery. ( wink wink )

How to share photos

There are two tools that I tried and worked:
1. Postimages. (courtesy from @Darthcoin )
How to use it? Easy breezy, just directly upload.
Here is our cat model:
2. Pasteboard ( courtesy from @nerd2ninja )
How to use it? Upload - go to the image - right click "open image in a new tab" - get the magic link.
( Note: If you upload the same photo or something similar, this tool will flag it by showing: Image deleted due to content policy violation )
By comparison, the pasteboard seems to have better quality but feel free to suggest even better tools.

Some hidden features

  • Subscribe
This one is really good if you want to follow/stalk someone, but it could be overwhelming, like the notifications dot would always be there; Subscribing 1-2 interesting brains you enjoy is good.
  • Forward sats
One post can forward sats to up to 5 other stackers; it could act as an appreciation for other's input or even do a fun fundraising like here.
This post is the first time I am experimenting with this feature. Before you post, go to the options at the bottom, simply input the user ID of the person you want to forward sats to and choose the percentage. Done!
  • Boost
Boosting your post in order to gain more visibility, the minimum amount is 5000 sats.
  • Bookmark content
Simply click the three dots in any great content you like and choose bookmark.
  • Hide your cowboy hat
This is a trick if you want to remain in the shallow: go to setting - privacy - hide, and you can also hide many things else. But I did an experiment on hiding my hat for one day, clearly fewer interactions, I guess the hat kind of shows some POW in a sense.
There are still many hidden or new features to be discovered and of course, many great content.!

⚡️ Levelling Up the Fun

How to stack sats

I guess this is the most asked question when browsing history. But it all comes down to offering value to others, which is exactly what money was for in the first place, as a medium for value exchange!
Value comes in different forms. It can be from posting fun memes, sharing useful information, asking good questions or offering solutions to people's questions, and the best strategy is always sharing your first-hand experiences, aka skin in the game. If you know something or have done something, share it; if you don't, it is better to say, "I don't know."

How to send ( customer ) zaps

Zapping is fun, and to be honest, 1000, 2000 sats is not much in a real-life sense, but comparing with the value you receive from others is like a steal, and not to mention it takes a long time to write a good post. From my understanding, zaps is more of a token of appreciation and encourages more people to share valuable information.
And with a fun side acting as a way of building relationships; For example, if I like someone's content, I naturally pay more attention to him or her, and my time and attention are the most precious things I have. Zapping is my way of saying thank you.
As @ekzyis mentioned here
Content determines the base value and relationships are multipliers
Wow, you might be wondering so how to zap? Simply clicking the bolt icon ⚡️ would zap the default amount that you set, and here are the two options for sending customer zaps:
1. Long-pressing and then choose from there.
For example, I set my default tippping to 121 sats; if I found something I like, I then long-press it and choose a different amount that I feel like zapping.
2. Enabling Turbo Zaps mode: every click is 10x.
For example, if the default zaps are 10 sats, two clicks would be 100 sats, and three clicks would be 1000 sats, as every click is 10x sats. This is quite handy, but it might result in some accidents if you click a few times.! But even with this mode on, you can still use the long-pressing and then choose from there.
And one of the most interesting laws in the universe is generally that the more you give, the more you would receive.
As below so above and beyond, I imagine
In short, more value is being shared, more zaps, and more fun. Here is my personal input, but I'd recommend everyone go read the FAQ and Guide, as you can discover more hidden fun there.

Lastly, I quite like the idea that everyone starts from zero in the Bitcoin world; it doesn't matter how many Bitcoins you hold or how well-established you are in the fiat world: trust needs to be earned, value needs to be proved.
You can't just do a lot of empty talks like in the fiat world, and this is the way.!
AMAZING POST! Natalia you should get all the credit /zaps from this. Just for taking the time to write all this you deserve a lot of sats. I will send you some anyways for this work.
@k00b please add this to the "guide" page, will be good for new users to read.
reply
guys, please don't zap this comment! All sats are going to Natalia and then fw to me, is like a continuous loop FFS! This is pure madness!

wow, so when you zap someone in the comment section, the ones being fw would have the cuts too? that is so cool, so does it mean everything in the post is shared?
I do not quite understand - isn't it normally when you zap someone, all the zap goes to that person? how does the cut work? eg If you are zapping 210 sats to @hq in the comment section, what would happen?
reply
pure madness

it's called a paid experiment, maybe some new findings will end up in one of my future articles 🤣

@k00b please add this to the "guide" page, will be good for new users to read.
My personal opinion on this is that I would like to avoid any official endorsement of anything even if it's great content. We should just make great content better discoverable.
I think it's part of the "SN spirit" that we're all equal and the community decides what is great :)
But yes, making old but great content better discoverable has been a long issue. @Natalie also mentions this:
Also, one more personal observation: most links' lifespan is generally 24 hours here.
imo, not only links but everything

so nice that this post is still hanging on the front page after two days 👀⚡️

And you will be featured in SNL !

And it's still getting zapped
Maybe that's why
I really need to make a SN blog post about how the trust algorithm works
Will also be good for me to understand it properly with concrete data

Yeah we suck at surfacing the archive.

Imaging when great content is easy to be rediscovered, this would encourage more people to create evergreens.! because bad content is short-lived = no ongoing sats 😂😂

One of my favorite things about SN is that we can each discover where we fit into the ecosystem: i.e. where we are adding value to the community.
Some people make great original posts, like this one, and others drive engagement by responding and keeping the conversations going. Other people are great at surfacing valuable resources and sharing those, while others help out with development of the site itself.
So far we manage all of that with very little toxic internet culture seeping in.
It's no surprise that many of us find ourselves spending more and more time here.
reply
Who could have thought the supposed most toxic place where toxic Bitcoin maximalists hangout turn out to be the funniest place to spend time on 😂

definitely, still crazy to think about that I just started as a contributor here not even a year ago
This is really helpful. I'm curious if you'd say more about what you noticed when you hid your cowboy hat? I haven't really noticed anything about having it or not having it, but maybe I haven't been paying the right attention or doing the right things.
reply
I generally felt less interaction; maybe people assumed I was just a "passenger" without any contributions 😂
You could also do an experiment: try commenting or even posting with or without the cowboy hat.
reply
I usually look to each new stacker profile, what they start posting, what they say, what they comment etc. For a while I monitor them and take notes, making their "profiles" to know with "who" am I talking.
You weren't just a passenger from the beginning you start putting interesting questions here. So I knew you are gathering info to know better this community. And I wait always to see your next post. Good posts!

The only problem with creating discussion posts where mostly what you are doing is just sharing a link is the duplication checks are not giving feedback to the user that the video, article or whatever was already shared. I can't remember if the search function was updated to also search links from link posts, but many times I have tried to verify that my link was not already, an then ten minutes later when browsing I see another post for that (sometimes same link, other times different link but same article / video, after redirection) existed long before posted mine.
But yes, discussion posts are a more natural fit for SN, whereas link posts are just HN or Reddit with zapping.

Interesting, this shouldn't be the case. Would be nice if you could give examples for links that are already posted but do not show up as duplicates.
reply
yes, search engine is not so well trained in SN. Sometimes I do searches for my own posts (without mentioning my alias) just to see what results will get somebody that doesn't know me or just search a simple guide. I know for a fact the title and the content I posted and if I put it into the search term is not showing up, only after deep scrolling.
Maybe it took time to index, who knows.
reply
yes, search engine is not so well trained in SN.
also, specific comments are hard to find.!
Eg. if I was looking for a specific comment, even if I remembered half of it, but I couldn't search it back; but I have learnt a trick on this because I usually zap the stuff that I like, and I end up finding it in my statistics! madness.
reply
Searching for specific content is something different from the dupes check in the link post form. I wasn't sure which one OP is talking about but I assumed the dupes check.
Did you search only for posts when you entered the title? By default it searches everything which includes random comments. When I use it, I always need to tweak the filters to find what I am looking for.
reply

I input all the keyword I remembered, then searched it with filters comment + match and couldn't find it 😳 so strange.
reply
SN does a pretty decent job of determining dups for Link posts. When creating a Link post, you will see that the Link had previously been posted in another Link post.
My reply above was addressing how creating a Discussion post that has a Link, there is no dup checking as far as I am aware, to indicate that a Link post (or another Discussion post even) already exists for that Link being added to the Discussion post.
reply
There's an upper echelon of SN content that makes it into the evergreen category -- just always maintains relevance no matter what.
Your post makes it there! :)

Excellent work @Natalia. SN is a special site. I've really enjoyed being a small part of the community here. Learned a lot and hopefully others have benefited from me contributions as well.
So I can get more Sats if My News is related and helping people? 🤔 interesting 🫂
reply
The logic is more like if you can add value to others, be helpful or solve problems, then you might stack more sats. Sats are merely people showing appreciation and hinting: I would like to see more from you.!
And maybe share things without any expectations - I don't think the main point of hanging out here is to stack sats TBH, but to learn and have fun, sats are a happy bonus.

reply
maybe about the amazing feature of cowboy hat. Many people still don't understand the importance of it. Hear you that @car? Is the most powerful thing on SN and few knows how to use it.
reply
My understanding of the cowboy hat so far is that it is signalling this user:
  1. continually spending some time here
  2. understanding the value of good content or showing appreciation to others by zapping
what else?
Thanks, but about what exactly? lol
reply
Curious, what is your understanding of cowboy hat ?
reply
I think it started as a gimmick (I think it was introduced before I joined SN) but the community liked it so much we need to think how to build on that
I also feel the cowboy hats are similar to "ranks" in old-school forums (like bitcointalk) where you can immediately see who is "trusted" and who is new.
However, the hats are more concise and hidden since a individual comment does not have as much screen real estate like on these forums. Also, you'll need to use SN for a while to "get them" (not only in the literal sense but to also understand what they are conveying) :)
reply
gimmick 🤣🤣 I like your honesty.

please don't reveal the secret, you swear an oath! The oath of cowboys...

Found this post today. To be honest, I've started off with a misunderstood Bio. Got some negative replies on it, ( as you will see when you visit my profile). So after some time I changed my bio to something just straight forward simple. Now my reason for this reply is to ask if it is possible to Remove those first couple replies which I feel now keeps making me look like a bad person or bum or whatever anyone like to name me. I'd appreciate it if there is any way to remove those reies please. I'm not here to bum or beg or anything of that sort. I'm here to learn from the community & to share my thoughts and content. I also in short want to thank those whom have been good & polite to me since I've joined here.

when @nemo did the beer fundraising fun, I was like, how did other users zap different amounts? like bigger than usual ones.

Feels good that SN is attracting more and more content creators. Especially since I really like your content about your life as a (former?) digital nomad and craftsmanship :)
Very helpful since I am thinking about "making the world my home" more myself recently
