Have we seen any clients implement NIP-72 - Moderated Communities yet?
  • I see https://habla.news has a moderated group section.
  • Keen to scout what else is out there 🙂
If you want to be a founder but don't know what to build, consider starting an agency because people will pay you and give you ideas. I've heard many success stories of agency agents turning into successful founders. It's probably way less painful than the alternative too.

Messing around with the 3d printer again. Not sure if its just me, but I love working on something new, getting distracted and doing somthing else, and then coming back to it with fresh eyes. I'll probably print out a small chess set, a bag clip, and some gardening stuff for the wife...among other things.
This weekend should be fun,
  • 3d print stuff
  • Nostr dev course (finish section 5)
  • Replit (completed day 26)
  • Run a 10k
  • Upload and organize files in my NextCloud
  • Fiat side job applications
  • S9 pace heater upgrade research
  • Open couple of magma channels
  • Quality time with wife and dog
reply
I’m just not sure I have the patience for 3d printers. And ‘fear of failed prints’ could become a thing for me I suspect.
reply
Understandable. I'm having alot of fun with it though, If i didnt find it interesting or enjoyable, it would be a complete waste of time.

Roundtable feature enhancements thread. Going to write things as they come to me.
  • comment ranking priority should always be given to OP (mod of discussion)
  • while the roundtable is ongoing, it might be best to sort by most recent first
    • when the roundtable is over, sorting by top makes sense
reply
Some assorted thoughts from someone who couldn't be there until it was over:
  • Would be cool to think of some mechanisms by which the discussion could play out over time. This is probably not a technology solution, but an informal one, e.g., "come be a part of this roundtable, but the assumption is that you'll re-approach it over the course of the next few days"
  • Could there be a thing where people submit questions in advance, and the moderators choose some? In a pinch, this could just be a normal SN post. (Maybe this even happened and I missed it.)
  • Seems like a good opportunity to increase density on old SN posts / increase the evergreen-ness of the site. E.g., questions could link to older relevant posts; and roundtable discussion could be summarized / aggregated into new SN posts. I am v interested in the idea of having these different ways of engaging with content, esp over time.
  • In fact, combining the prev two items, this suggests a potential role for someone who is actively curating the site and creating higher-level content out of more atomic units; and some tools to help perform that role.
  • Is it desirable to have other roundtable discussions that are not "official" (e.g., blessed by the sysops?) What user-level tools would be needed to do that successfully for someone w/out admin access?
Would love to talk about these ideas more if anyone cares.
reply

The primitive might be allowing people to create lists of content kind of like pinterest boards or video playlists.
Is it desirable to have other roundtable discussions that are not "official" (e.g., blessed by the sysops?) What user-level tools would be needed to do that successfully for someone w/out admin access?
Anyone can create one. It's just a matter of forwarding sats to the roundtable participants. We don't give ourselves any special tools usually because we would prefer to not be In the Way.
reply
Perhaps lists is the answer. (How did you make that text red?) In my mind I'm thinking a bit of a mid-level structure note that people could compose like legos.
Some people who are really expert Twitter threaders wind up doing this, which is impressive given that Twitter is pretty much the shittiest possible interface for such a thing. But life finds a way.
reply
How did you make that text red?
Surround the text in backticks.
In my mind I'm thinking a bit of a mid-level structure note that people could compose like legos.
I'm still a total noob with this information mapping stuff, but composable/recursive is usually the thing that lets life find a way.
I believe when you first joined you mentioned your interest in information mapping (or maybe I'm misremembering). Is there any single greatest book on the subject?
reply
You remember correctly. I can only think of one book on the subject that I like, which is this one, but it is good. The best content tends to be not-books, which I guess isn't surprising. The site I linked to above is a treasure for that stuff. Maggie Appleton writes some very approachable things -- here's an example.
Another way to get an intuition is to Fuck Around And Find Out. The two best tools for this are probably Obsidian and Logseq. I've used both, but I mostly use this stupid thing I made myself that has accrued like geological time, hacked together out of emacs org mode and elisp. Org-roam is a more sensible variant of that approach that I keep intending to try, except my investment in my own arcane tool is so high.
reply
  • obvi roundtable guests should probably get ranking priority too ... I like managing this with ranking rather than segregating the spectators and the guests
  • a "waiting area" for AMA/Roundtables where they can announce when they start in advance and build up sats to be used for ranking when they go live and comments.
    • I've noticed AMA people wanting to not wait while comments come in, but by the time they arrive to answer, the AMA is too old to rank high
reply
I wonder if you could do something like "temporary ranking" for stuff like this? E.g., not sure what SN ranking the guests have, but, for the purposes of that thread, they should be the kings and queens of it. Which could be an interesting construct in other ways, maybe.

good idea. this reminds me of youtube where you can set a premiere time for a video, and your subscribers can see the countdown along with the thumbnail on their feed and can even leave a comment
reply
That's what I was thinking of
reply
  • could definitely use "live" updating comments either via websockets or polling
reply
Hmm it appears my notifications got even slower after last night’s update. That extra filter for mutes must be slowing things down
reply
Mutes table indexed properly? I haven’t looked at the code closely
reply
Yep compound index on the two fields filtered on.
I have A LOT of items relative to other folks so I'm probably pretty sensitive to these slow downs, but with the way the notification query is structured - every item driven query needs to do this mute anti join ... so one option is to just rewrite the notifications query to not need to do that but it's sensitive to changes because all columns need to match.
I'll take a look a the query analyzer. It might be choosing some obviously wrong query plan.

Speaking of notifications: Sometimes my check box goes back to the default (unchecked) after a few days. I'm not sure if it's a bug or if it's just my phone.

Howdy gang!!! Friday is here my friends and the weekend is about to setoff, this was a challenging week indeed, having a cold and teaching is absolutely brutal but managed to survive the week and all is good, payday today as well so time to do some DCA and hodl, rest and recover my health this weekend, perhaps I'll pamper myself with some homemade chicken soup and noodles, grandma's version, hope it works out. I wish you all a phenomenal weekend and may it be filled with love and joy, also may your endeavors be fruitful and successful, remember my friend, that you are important and you matter, thank you for everything and thank you for being, you're awesome!!! Be well and stay frosty gang!!

Was so looking forward to this weekend because I thought I would finish accumulating the 29+k sats that is necessary to buy my preferred gift card from Bitrefill
Bloody hell. I just realised that it charges a 3k network fee. Not daunted but bummed that my goal this weekend can’t be achieved
How do you guys cope with using sats amidst such high network fees?
reply
They charge that for Lightning deposits?
reply
Yes apparently!
But somehow the network fee doesn’t apply when I choose a smaller ($6) UberEats-style food voucher. It’s so strange!
reply
Channel opening fees?
reply
A few more @nemo inspired blasts and you're there
reply
That's sad buddy. I know you've been looking forward to buying the gift card. I try to stay away from projects that charges high network fees. I can't be wasting my sats on fees. They are too precious to me.
reply
I agree with you. Unfortunately I’m a parent with negligible me time, so I cannot patronize those restaurant that are listed on the btcmap.org website. Giving local merchants my sats is what I hope to eventually do
reply
I completely understand. You should have enough by tomorrow morning. Just have faith and everything else will fall into place.
reply
Haha I’m okay! Just zapping people away. I don’t want to turn into some Scrooge haha
reply
I'm glad. What's the gift you're planning on buying, if you don't mind me asking?
reply
A supermarket voucher. Haha. What can I say? I have two young children.
Also I have a digital bank account with my supermarket and if I make five purchases in a month, I will qualify for a higher interest rate tier. So that voucher will definitely contribute towards my goal.

Its raining again. My dog won't walk when it's coming down really hard. She'd rather hold it. I'm experiencing a Darth like frustration.

My dog's the same and she also won't go for a walk when it's hot. My daughter, on the other hand only wants to go out when the weather's fairly unpleasant.
reply
Wait till she starts driving. My daughter is taking a two hour drive to visit her boyfriend later today. Her father will sit and worry.

Thankfully, I'm pretty far out from dealing with all that stuff. Hang in there.

We are starting to get warmer days this side of the world. Winter was hectic with lots of flooding. On the bright side, we had plenty of rain. I remember a few years back when Cape Town in the Western Cape was on the verge of running out of drinkable water. I've always been grateful for any rain we get after such a horrible experience.

ᕦ(ò_óˇ) Day 14 of exercising everyday before the saloon opens
2 weeks! Some conclusions:
  • I sleep way better now
  • I have more energy
  • I feel like I'm on a good track in life
  • I'm stacking sats
  • some people were inspired
  • public accountability works but it's weird. Why can't I just be accountable towards myself? Are we that much social creatures? That we need other people to keep us accountable? A quote I'll never forget from an ASMRtist is this:
we're as much social creatures as we like to deny it
I woke up at 9AM, stayed in bed until 10AM, got up, noticed my body hurts from the workout yesterday and just went outside for some fresh air and sunshine.

I'm loving the progress you're making. You started inspiring me to get off my ass and start stretching at least in the mornings. Get the blood circulating again ;)
reply
Yeah, I think my initial idea was just to fix my sleeping schedule lol. Then I thought let's combine it with exercise!
But I want to get up as early as possible. My goal is something like 6AM. But need to do small steps as I noticed with my attempt to get up at 7:30AM a few days ago - again.
Mornings have a really nice feel. I am so much more productive in the morning. I just need to get up, lol

Is it a piece of coral?

What appears to be a white wooden window sill / or picture frame, is really throwing me off. It looks like the underside of an octopus arm, the belly of a starfish, or a dirty q-tip under high magnification.
In conclusion, it must be a piece of coral

It’s more localised slang… after a disgraced UK pop star.
Dog truffles is another polite term.
I heard of a guy who grew up thinking dog mess was called ‘Mind’. Every time they were out walking his mum would point out dog sh1t and say ‘Mind!’
