you probably aren't making more than a couple bucks here and there on SN
you might be surprised to see these numbers
@Undisciplined and I are just wash trading our sats.
reply
Indeed, but even a couple hundred thousand sats isn't much when you consider the time the top stackers put into SN.
(Unless you think bitcoin is going to sat cent parity, but in that case you would get more sats if you just put the time into fiat mining and buying bitcoin.)
I'm addicted to this site because even though I've been posting things on the internet for decades, this is the first time I've made any money at it. And even though it really isn't much when you consider it by the amount of work put in, it's kinda magical. It's a bit of a mystery to me.

I definitely understand, but there are different types of work here:
  1. Post
  2. Respond
  3. Respond early
  4. Zap new (good content)
  5. Discriminate. If my post sucks at least I paid for it and later on if I'm doing more interesting things it can be discovered or I just move on. Discriminate regarding my tastes and interests via zaps. I might like something no one else does but at least I let the author know someone zapped to appreciate. Also I can pay to comment and help that person know what I think to help him out.
  6. Share on NOSTR or other social media - Automatically the share link has your user name and ID. If someone joins you get rewarded or at least you bring attention to a post you like. You may also share your own masterpiece.
  7. Donate. You are seeding the program so that Stacker won't need venture capitol funding. The more you put in the more you get out. The goal is for Stacker to not need outside capital. If you are no longer getting the value for your labor then it is time to do something else.
  8. Criticize - Someone might be a troll and you can be harsh, funny, encouraging or indifferent. At least the troll paid to troll you. Maybe you make a friend.
  9. Scoop - so the troll is an asshole. Maybe he had some good ideas. Scoop his posts and look for any redeeming qualities. Maybe he had some good ideas or he's just a spook funded by MKULTRA. Who knows. If there is anything good, zap it. If it's all bad. Let it go.
  10. Honesty - If you see something sketchy, point it out or ask questions. The better the quality of content here, the better your experience will be.
Looks up, convinced there are not too many mistakes and posts ☝️

People often compare SN to nostr and wonder why there's less zapping there. Your 10 points demonstrate all the jobs sats are doing here.

There is such thing as a vanity press. This has that element, too. There is also going into the casino with your money to the house and they give you tokens to play in the house. There is another aspect that as an investor you are allowed to sit at the table. Skin in the game.
It's brilliant.
I've been publishing since 1988 little zines and other nonsense. To me this is better than anything I could have dreamed up. The whole punk fanzine movement was DIY. Do it yourself. You paid to print and you sold zines to buy beer. Or you took the risk of printing zines at the office at night while no one was there.
True story.
My dad let me use the xerox machine to do my zine. His boss found out and was pissed. However, years later his boss actually did his own poetry book in a similar digest fashion and told my dad to give me a copy.
I actually planted a seed.

wonder why there's less zapping there
I have more reasons:
  • it's easier to zap on SN since you have a custodial wallet here
  • nostr has likes so people go down the path of less resistance to show "appreciation" by just liking and not zapping
  • SN has daily rewards which acts as an incentive for zapping. People are greedy and stingy by nature. SN works with human nature in this aspect while nostr doesn't. What do I get in return for zapping on nostr? A zap receipt that can be counterfeited?
The zap receipt is not a proof of payment, all it proves is that some nostr user fetched an invoice. The existence of the zap receipt implies the invoice as paid, but it could be a lie given a rogue implementation.
  • Posting on nostr has no fees1, so there might be less quality content there

Footnotes

  1. Assuming you're not limiting yourself to paid relays like nostr.wine but there, it's just a subscription and not pay per post so you can still post as much of anything as you want with no downsides after you paid the subscription. Or are there relays where you have to pay per published event?

I would like to see a nostr client that requires payment to post, has paid relays and makes zapping anyone easy. The client can be free open source software but it can encourage investing data via cultivated action.

I've pitched this idea too. I'd also like people to be able to customize what it costs to reply to their notes.

I think there is a way to post notes in nostr that you have to pay to read. Maybe I saw this somewhere else.
I think here on Stacker it works emotionally for me because I and everyone have to pay to post, like and respond. Also I don't see a shitty more rewards now and later cut down because....
The examples are Fold, Lolli, Fountain and Bitcoin Magazine paying 1000 of sats to get you hooked and then tapering down due to fiat inflation increasing expenses and while Bitcoin increases buying power but not that much.
Here seeing real price discovery. Once the power company, the network provider and expenses are covered it should profitable because it's its own complete product. We are being farmed, too and we like it.

Maybe that should be in consideration for the SN motto/slogan. At the very least, it's a good testimonial.
a way to post notes in nostr that you have to pay to read
That sounds vaguely familiar. It's not what I would be interested in. though. I want people to be able to read my notes, but I would like to put a minimal cost to reply. I was mostly thinking of it as a way to lure bigger fish onto nostr, because it would be a powerful monetization tool that also cuts down on spammy comments.
I hadn't thought about the zapping as the sole button on SN. I am definitely guilty of defaulting to shakas on nostr because, well, I can have the interaction and have my sats too.

I think the beauty here is that sats are freedom of speech and they are also protection of work. Metaphorically it is the 1st and 2nd amendment in action.
The choice of value to add is:
  1. I like so I pay you in an instant. (you just made 0.00001 USD which in an hour would be $2.44 in sats which is a deflationary currency) Combine that with 20 others and that's $40 an hour. Not bad. Meaning that you potentially could be compensated for your time by continuing your positive behavior. It you grew your audience you would have more zaps per second. It's farming.
  2. I like but I don't want to zap so I respond with good information that I have to pay to share!
  3. I like and I can't zap, or comment but I can share somewhere else where my handle is recognized of I bring a new user.
Any of the above activities I can earn sats back from because I am actively gaming the playing field by positive participation and not driving focus to garbage.
  1. I can do all three above.
All of this is net positive, volunteer communication.

It's crazy how slight differences like this (no likes on SN, only sats as a signal) can have emergent properties.
I like nostr as a protocol though. I just don't like how it's currently mostly used. I really think nostr crippled itself by embracing twitter-like experiences too soon. It might need a few years to recover from that.
But I am starting to sound biased I guess. Can't help myself though. I work on SN for a reason lol

Nostr is a monster. It's good because someone can get attention and earn a small amount of sats or at least use them in the wild. The next move, like bitcoin is to learn how things work and start to build or promote. If some person is a half decent writer she can come in with 1000 sats and apply nostr skills to Stacked and she can triple her stack in a few days.
She could read Writer's market from the library and apply that here, too.

I’m in the Philippines right now where some people make $6/day. For them they could make a living on here easily washing their posts through a LLM or even just copying posts from /r/bitcoin

Wow! I'd suggest at the donate page having the Stacker lightning address so people like @DarthCoin who don't want to take sats can send them to the Stacker News LN address via the automatic withdrawal.
Mechanically it should be easy to do unless the Stacker LN address is on the same LN node.
