For me, there’s a lot of nonsense on Reddit and I’ve been a lurker for awhile. I only recently decided to post because my wife is interested in discussing bitcoin, but not to the level that I’d be able to chat about it on here. I went down the rabbit hole of money and health and she took the health baton and is making sure we eat steaks and dodge seed oils. But yea, it’s cool to be able to have discussions with a like minded community and get a few sats here and there.
I feel like it’s just a positive feedback loop. We get zapped sats, we zap sats to others on SN and Nostr. It’s all positive and that’s something I’m all for putting out there.
Recently I zapped a few friends that never had bitcoin, about 12,000 sats each and they were all like WOW, this is amazing and are now going down the rabbit hole. One of them being my 7 year old niece.

I'M HERE FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS!

ONE:
I THOROUGHLY ENJOY PARTAKING IN A BITCOIN-CENTERED, LIGHTNING-POWERED AND GROWING (HOPEFULLY, THERE'S ENOUGH LOVE AND SATS LEFT FOR A FEW MORE OF US) SOCIAL MEDIA / WILDLY BETTER REDDIT (IF TERRITORIES ARE HERE TO STAY, WHICH I HOPE).
TWO:
I'M ABSO-SATTY-LUTELY ENJOYING THE WAY ONE CAN ACTUALLY EARN SATOSHIS ON SN, AND THEN THERE'S THE REWARDS! OHH... THE REWARDS... 🥰🥰
THREE:
I ENJOY POSTING CONTENT HERE, FOR FROM WHAT I'VE NOTICED THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HATE / TOXICITY OR UNWANTED BEHAVIOUR IN GENERAL... AT LEAST I HAVEN'T COME ACROSS IT UNTIL NOW!
FOUR:
I'M IN ABSOLUTE ECSTASY THAT THE AFOREMENTIONED THREE POINTS CAN BE REACHED THROUGH USING ONE, I REPEAT ONE GENIUS APPLICATION!
I applaud @k00b @ekzyis @kr & more for their efforts and the masterpiece they already created ( and will make even better as time goes by!)

I chose "Here for the community, not sats", because that's the closest to what it feels like.
I do love how sats are used here, though, and I do pay attention to what kinds of things earn sats. However, I do that mostly because it's a gauge of what people here are interested in seeing and I don't want to spam content that only interests me.

Nope. But I confess that I used to focus on the trending Hot posts because I thought doing so would help me get back my sats’ worth.
Now that I have a bigger bag (and withdraw what I think is my fair share from here), I’m not calculative about “breaking even”. Sometimes I zap new Stackers’ posts or “obscure” posts to give others a lift up. It’s okay - I have enough haha

Maybe, but I also just think people are really stupid about money and this is probably another thing they're wrong about.
I am interested in why it works so much better here than it even does on nostr. Is it because the posts cost money that we want to tip the creator?
reply
Nostr was slow to have a client with an integrated wallet, so there was a bit more friction than on here (even if it was just a little. On SN tipping is SO EASY!).
Also SN has the rewards function which is genius.

I think it's also a micropayment and culture thing.
I think if people outside of bitcoin hear "internet tipping" they think about payments > 1 USD since tipping someone just a few cents is unheard of1. "Tipping" might also imply that you should tip because else you're a bad person (related to peer pressure). I think the US has a strong tipping culture where this is the case but I am not from the US so I don't really know from first-hand experiences.
Tipping also implies that you already paid for something imo. So that's like a double negative: it implies you should pay for something and implies that you should pay even more afterwards. I think that's why people think it would ruin the community: Everyone would demand to get paid and more and not paying will be considered rude behavior2.
But with micropayments, it doesn't matter so much that anyone would demand to get paid and everything is still basically free since just zapping 1 sat is also fine3.
It's the scale of micropayments by a lot of individuals that gives the ability to zap people the most value. Earning 1k sats on SN is not much in fiat terms, but knowing that enough people cared to give you 1k sats in total is the value. That is the true frontier.
Footnotes
  1. This might even be considered rude, lol
  2. Which leads to paywalls which leads to walled gardens which is basically where the (rest of the) internet is currently degenerating into
  3. Another nice effect is that you can express yourself more precisely by the amount of sats you give.
reply
Tipping is an awful term.
Micropayments is more accurate, but also kinda technical/financial services sounding. Not exactly fun.
Microtipping is claimed by the nano people (google it), and really isn't better than either of the above.
We do have the analogy of street musicians and busking. When you give them money it isn't usually called a tip. I don't think English has a word for this, actually. It sometimes gets called a donation--but that is awful. But the interaction is the closest I've found to what we are doing on here.
You hit on a lot of what I've been hearing, and I do think most people unfamiliar with zapping just fail to get the idea with the words we use.
I'm becoming a zapping maxi (not in the sense that I'm particularly good at it--im still too stingy, although I've definitely made more on SN since I've been become looser with that zap button--but in the sense that using money (bitcoin) to mediate online interactions is such a better way).
reply
You're making me think of a concept in economics called "moral crowding out". There are many things in society that are governed by social sanction rather than monetary fines.
Occasionally, when people try to levy a fine to reduce an undesirable behavior the result is more of the behavior, because the social disincentive was "crowded out" by the monetary disincentive and the social disincentive was stronger. Basically, if you tell me being late to pick up my kid costs $5 I might be more willing to be late than when I just know that I'm inconveniencing you and I don't want to be rude.
I think that's sort of what people have in mind when they say things like "money would ruin the community, or the interaction or something". It also reminds me of how many people don't like the idea of paying kids to do chores or homework. They want the behavior to be more intrinsically motivated.

Ohh, yes, this so much.
Since I don't care so much anymore about being everyone's darling (that was previously the case at least IRL), I actually started to think more in monetary terms.
For example, it used to scare me more to get caught and having to admit that I evaded the fare then actually paying the fine. But now, I am less scared since I would either just admit that I didn't buy a ticket (and get it over with) or even try to "talk" my way out of the situation by stalling and then running out of the train when it stops and the doors open since they probably don't care enough to run after me. And if they would run after me, I think I have the moral high ground again lol.

Yeah, I think the fiat system really fucked our relationship with money.

Is that what psychologists call "transference"? Maybe not, but what a great example of blame shifting. We collectively tuned out the part that carried some personal accountability and selectively heard the part that blamed an inanimate object.

Definitely the community then. If the community here at SN was toxic I wouldn’t stick around even for Sats.
reply
The sats are the community. It's the denominator not the numerator. It's a real scarce thing that must be worked for and it takes humans to provide that communication!
It's like buying drinks for all your buddies who will have sats later on instead of pissing your fiat reward away.
Fiat currency is so amazingly evil that we've forgotten how giving a tip (zap) here is really an amazing gift:
  1. Micro payments
  2. Settled on chain once you accumulate enough to warrant UTXO.
  3. SO CHEAP NOW but not for long.

Its probably tied into why I'm using SN. Its fun to zap and to get zapped.
Sometimes I feel like I've asked an interesting or unique question but it often goes unanswered. Someone might zap it early in hopes of getting more back if the post rises. So I'm not sure if that's a good incentive...
I've tried putting bounties but it doesn't always work (maybe not large enough).
Also I'm in a different time zone which I think effects engagement too.
reply
I don't think bounties are necessary. The thing here that is more valuable than Bitcoin is information, feedback, links, receipts and perspectives. All of us have been trained to give this away for the algorithms to mine. Then we've been trained to beg for tips.
Here there is no begging. Everyone has paid to post. Everyone can signal via zaps that there is a like instead of a stupid ❤️. If you don't like a post you can pay to comment or choose to find another post and reward that.

Indeed, but even a couple hundred thousand sats isn't much when you consider the time the top stackers put into SN.
(Unless you think bitcoin is going to sat cent parity, but in that case you would get more sats if you just put the time into fiat mining and buying bitcoin.)
I'm addicted to this site because even though I've been posting things on the internet for decades, this is the first time I've made any money at it. And even though it really isn't much when you consider it by the amount of work put in, it's kinda magical. It's a bit of a mystery to me.
reply
I definitely understand, but there are different types of work here:
  1. Post
  2. Respond
  3. Respond early
  4. Zap new (good content)
  5. Discriminate. If my post sucks at least I paid for it and later on if I'm doing more interesting things it can be discovered or I just move on. Discriminate regarding my tastes and interests via zaps. I might like something no one else does but at least I let the author know someone zapped to appreciate. Also I can pay to comment and help that person know what I think to help him out.
  6. Share on NOSTR or other social media - Automatically the share link has your user name and ID. If someone joins you get rewarded or at least you bring attention to a post you like. You may also share your own masterpiece.
  7. Donate. You are seeding the program so that Stacker won't need venture capitol funding. The more you put in the more you get out. The goal is for Stacker to not need outside capital. If you are no longer getting the value for your labor then it is time to do something else.
  8. Criticize - Someone might be a troll and you can be harsh, funny, encouraging or indifferent. At least the troll paid to troll you. Maybe you make a friend.
  9. Scoop - so the troll is an asshole. Maybe he had some good ideas. Scoop his posts and look for any redeeming qualities. Maybe he had some good ideas or he's just a spook funded by MKULTRA. Who knows. If there is anything good, zap it. If it's all bad. Let it go.
  10. Honesty - If you see something sketchy, point it out or ask questions. The better the quality of content here, the better your experience will be.
Looks up, convinced there are not too many mistakes and posts ☝️

People often compare SN to nostr and wonder why there's less zapping there. Your 10 points demonstrate all the jobs sats are doing here.

There is such thing as a vanity press. This has that element, too. There is also going into the casino with your money to the house and they give you tokens to play in the house. There is another aspect that as an investor you are allowed to sit at the table. Skin in the game.
It's brilliant.
I've been publishing since 1988 little zines and other nonsense. To me this is better than anything I could have dreamed up. The whole punk fanzine movement was DIY. Do it yourself. You paid to print and you sold zines to buy beer. Or you took the risk of printing zines at the office at night while no one was there.
True story.
My dad let me use the xerox machine to do my zine. His boss found out and was pissed. However, years later his boss actually did his own poetry book in a similar digest fashion and told my dad to give me a copy.
I actually planted a seed.

wonder why there's less zapping there
I have more reasons:
  • it's easier to zap on SN since you have a custodial wallet here
  • nostr has likes so people go down the path of less resistance to show "appreciation" by just liking and not zapping
  • SN has daily rewards which acts as an incentive for zapping. People are greedy and stingy by nature. SN works with human nature in this aspect while nostr doesn't. What do I get in return for zapping on nostr? A zap receipt that can be counterfeited?
The zap receipt is not a proof of payment, all it proves is that some nostr user fetched an invoice. The existence of the zap receipt implies the invoice as paid, but it could be a lie given a rogue implementation.
  • Posting on nostr has no fees1, so there might be less quality content there
Footnotes
  1. Assuming you're not limiting yourself to paid relays like nostr.wine but there, it's just a subscription and not pay per post so you can still post as much of anything as you want with no downsides after you paid the subscription. Or are there relays where you have to pay per published event?
reply
I would like to see a nostr client that requires payment to post, has paid relays and makes zapping anyone easy. The client can be free open source software but it can encourage investing data via cultivated action.
reply
I've pitched this idea too. I'd also like people to be able to customize what it costs to reply to their notes.
reply
I think there is a way to post notes in nostr that you have to pay to read. Maybe I saw this somewhere else.
I think here on Stacker it works emotionally for me because I and everyone have to pay to post, like and respond. Also I don't see a shitty more rewards now and later cut down because....
The examples are Fold, Lolli, Fountain and Bitcoin Magazine paying 1000 of sats to get you hooked and then tapering down due to fiat inflation increasing expenses and while Bitcoin increases buying power but not that much.
Here seeing real price discovery. Once the power company, the network provider and expenses are covered it should profitable because it's its own complete product. We are being farmed, too and we like it.
I hadn't thought about the zapping as the sole button on SN. I am definitely guilty of defaulting to shakas on nostr because, well, I can have the interaction and have my sats too.
reply
I think the beauty here is that sats are freedom of speech and they are also protection of work. Metaphorically it is the 1st and 2nd amendment in action.
The choice of value to add is:
  1. I like so I pay you in an instant. (you just made 0.00001 USD which in an hour would be $2.44 in sats which is a deflationary currency) Combine that with 20 others and that's $40 an hour. Not bad. Meaning that you potentially could be compensated for your time by continuing your positive behavior. It you grew your audience you would have more zaps per second. It's farming.
  2. I like but I don't want to zap so I respond with good information that I have to pay to share!
  3. I like and I can't zap, or comment but I can share somewhere else where my handle is recognized of I bring a new user.
Any of the above activities I can earn sats back from because I am actively gaming the playing field by positive participation and not driving focus to garbage.
  1. I can do all three above.
All of this is net positive, volunteer communication.

It's crazy how slight differences like this (no likes on SN, only sats as a signal) can have emergent properties.
I like nostr as a protocol though. I just don't like how it's currently mostly used. I really think nostr crippled itself by embracing twitter-like experiences too soon. It might need a few years to recover from that.
But I am starting to sound biased I guess. Can't help myself though. I work on SN for a reason lol
reply
Nostr is a monster. It's good because someone can get attention and earn a small amount of sats or at least use them in the wild. The next move, like bitcoin is to learn how things work and start to build or promote. If some person is a half decent writer she can come in with 1000 sats and apply nostr skills to Stacked and she can triple her stack in a few days.
She could read Writer's market from the library and apply that here, too.
you would get more sats if you just put the time into fiat mining and buying bitcoin

One more thing to think about here at Stacker verses NOSTR.
NOSTR is open and closed. If you don't have anything at all regarding Bitcoin you can get set up there and start to work for zaps by positively reinforcing others with relative information.
Eventually you can join a Stacker civilization with hundreds of sats and start your journey to more focused V4V posting.
Here Stacker might also sponsor a NOSTR personality with a new membership by having a territory of non Bitcoin people who need to be Bitcoin people.
Seed and seed and seed.
Yes, I want a job working for Stacker. So I'm doing it! 😂

I will be posting what I want and zapping content I like, find useful and/or want to see more of. But I think there is a system to be gamed here and suspect there is behaviour that ends up lifting up certain posts or certain user's posts, which is reminiscent of big tech social media and, in all honesty, puts me off investing my time in posting. For example, being rewarded for zapping top posts and top comments early will inevitably lead to people trying to second guess which those posts/comment might be. This could leave decent content sitting in the doldrums with not as many zaps because it's predicted as not being worthy or "top". I very strongly suspect that is what is happening. I see people saying that if someone doesn't get zaps it's because it's not content people are interested in and I'm sure there's an element of that but I think there are other things at play here.
