This is a question that has come up to me several times in the past. I've even discussed it with friends, and it's an interesting thought experiment. Imagine that only you and your small community are the only inhabitants of the Earth. Everything that has been built so far has disappeared. There are no houses, cars, tools, nothing. The day before this happened, you are the only one who can choose one object to take with you.
pull down to refresh
An axe.
https://m.stacker.news/20598
Is a tool that could help you do a lot of things:
I'll bring the beer then
THIS is how you start a new civilization π
This is getting out of hand π
you see? My axe is even bringing collaboration, not only provide shelter, food, defense...
But it was a collaboration with disguised interests, I also wanted to be friends with the axe guy π
It doesn't matter. He saw the potential of the axe and he knew that the beers will bring more energy to handle that axe. Beers contain protein.
Your books doesn't help me too much, maybe to make the first fire or wipe my ass when I shit. The knowledge about plants is not hard to learn "on the fly" and as I said, it takes TIME, that in such a apocalyptic situation you do not have too much.
What if immediately after you are released in that world, an animal is coming straight to you. What you gonna do? hit the animal with the book in his head?
not just any axe guy, but an axe guy know what he's doing. π
Looks like you guys have already been to the forest together. π
ππππππππππππ
no problem, can take the six pack
https://m.stacker.news/20637
Well, now it's all gone to hell in a handbasket π
LOL this discussion is getting crazy πππ
It started quite innocent, but not is getting complicated.
Should last until harvest, then we make a new batch
I have to agree with this, and not just because as a boy, the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen was incredibly formative
https://m.stacker.news/20677
I watched Primitive technology channel on YouTube and he started with axe too
I see that too, and I don't recall seeing it with tools other than his own. But I could be wrong because I don't watch every episode. I've seen him blacksmithing though!
cc @DarthCoin
https://m.stacker.news/20632 πyoutube.com
He started with axe, built everything with it and evolved eventually to blacksmithing. He is like a character from Age of Empire video game
I've only ever seen him use a stone ax to cut wood. Can't say I've seen the first videos though.
In most cases he built different houses with different kinds of roofs

From the entire small community, only you could choose an object.
But now I'm curious, would you actually take a pen if someone already had an axe? That sounds like poetry π

well done ! That pot also could have even more use.
LOL I should make a meme:
ππππ
yes, make hot drinks and even food.
waiting for the meme! πππππ
In exchange for an axe, which could be built, you would let all the knowledge in a book be forgotten forever. You must be trolling because otherwise I don't recognize you, is that you NatΓ‘lia? π

A pack of cigarettes. By the time I'm done smoking it, I will already have things figured out. Tobocca is the ultimate nutropic

now we talkin
Weed will make you unproductive in this situation. Save it for after you figure everything out. I could probably build myself a type writer from mining iron with my bare hands as a result of cigarettes
Cigarettes have chemicals, i prefer nature rolled in a tobacco leaf, good for creativity
The chemical in Marlboro Reds enhance brain function. Can't speak for chemicals of other cigarette companies. We all know that Virginia Slims are for pussies though.
conversation here is on another level. I'm too high to follow π
A good rule of thumb, let the Bugle think for you. It makes life easier
LOLOLOLOL
if you make good jokes we will accept you in our "axe community" πππ
I don't want to be in your community. You will just want my cigarettes
cigarettes are the best store of value in theese situations
That's why you have protect your pack.
insane π
No u
ππππ
I don't smoke but your cigarettes could be good to make smoke and fire.
You have the right of freedom of association, nobody is forcing you.
Trust me. The most valuable thing when society falls apart will be cigarettes. Maybe tied with water.
I will tell you another trick: in case you finish your packs, you can take @0xbitcoiner book and use it to make more cigarettes with it. We can find some weed to smoke in the forest, no worry.

If @DarthCoin brings an axe, I'll bring a bow. If I can also bring arrows, that'd be nice.
Maybe a rifle with a lot of bullets would be better but arrows can be reused π
Or maybe I should bring a trebuchet so I can use stones I find. Then I can sling stones all day and maybe people far away will see stones flying in the air and be like "that's where we should go" and bring more stuff
This post has definitely gone off the rails a long time ago. I'm calling it a day π
A horse for scouting would also be useful. Could even carry multiple people. And that horse only needs grass and water to survive afaik.
With a bow I could become a mangudai π
π Now, seriously, the question was just an object for the whole community. Which one would you choose?
If arrows are included in a bow, then a bow. If not, a horse.
But if I'm alone a good knife would always be my choice. That's what everyone recommends for survival.
A horse π This post should have been posted by birdeye21, for sure it wouldn't have gone off the rails and would have gotten much more attention an stack π
What's wrong with a horse? π
Or maybe I'll bring something that is powered by solar energy. Infinite energy!

118! haven't seen a post with so many comments for a while
we relocated the saloon today
SN is on fire today
what do you think the deep @nemo would bring
cats. I could say that are good for hunting and keep the cave clean from rats.
yes, we don't want rats around the beer and cigarettes
Memes
I would choose a book about plants and agriculture
That should be already in your knowledge "package", information is easy to carry... tools/weapons don't.
You never go to a trip alone, like in a survival mode?
Life out there is really dangerous. Just a book will not protect you.
yes, def not carrying books, those knowledge should be within you.
An axe would be a great choice and would be on my list if it were possible to add more items. It's true that knowledge could already be part of the luggage, but in all honesty, my knowledge in this area is limited. I choose the book from a long-term perspective and for the purpose of knowledge transfer. Each person will choose a different object because we are all different and have different levels of knowledge in various areas.
True it reminds me of that amazing survival story (book and film) .. wild something I think
true but just think about this aspect: planting and growing stuff, takes time and you can learn it yourself, just by observing nature, testing etc.
The cavemen didn't jumped from caves into agriculture without having first the axe made from stones...
Until a plant will grow and be ready to eat, you need: shelter, fire, food.
You said "There are no houses, cars, tools, nothing." that means not even plants ready to eat. Planting needs fertile soil so you need to find one first. maybe you are at kms away from it.
Taking a book with you... you will die after 10 days and you still didn't grow any plant.
Good luck with that.
Great minds think alike!

I think if you look at archaeology it will give you an answer. Probably the first things humans made were: arrows, axes, and pots
Don't sleep on pots as they enable certain things very difficult without: Water gathering + Cooking with water (soups/stews where bones are boiled are a great way to extract nutrients from rather meager portions of raw material)
I don't understand how this could be better than the knowledge of a book that has centuries, if not thousands of years of knowledge. You could build tools with whatever material you had, couldn't you?
yes, but it takes time and effort to MAKE anything π even just figuring out how and where to get the raw material already takes time, and then with all the cutting and burning, much work, how can you survive during this time?
It seems like we have different perspectives on this. You're taking a short-term view, while I'm focused on the long-term. This is similar to the different approaches to investing in Bitcoin - some people trade it for short-term profits, while others see it as a long-term store of value.
In the long run we're all dead
It's true, we must make the most of the wealth we create before our time is up.
Sur la table, le creuset
Hahaha....
The benefit of Le Creuset is it can double as a weapon!
The biggest most detailed survival manual I can find.

My brain. Knowledge and cognitive ability is the foundation for developing and reaquiring skills.
The brain was already there π you can choose an object for the whole community. Which one would you choose?
A knife
Books - whoud be my choice.
The Bible. God's Word is all you need
Matthew 6.31:33 (KJV)
