This is a question that has come up to me several times in the past. I've even discussed it with friends, and it's an interesting thought experiment. Imagine that only you and your small community are the only inhabitants of the Earth. Everything that has been built so far has disappeared. There are no houses, cars, tools, nothing. The day before this happened, you are the only one who can choose one object to take with you.

An axe.

Is a tool that could help you do a lot of things:

cut wood so you could get warm
build stuff
hammering stuff
hunt animals to get food
build traps and get food
make fire, with a simple stone you can have sparks
defend yourself, is a powerful weapon

It doesn't matter. He saw the potential of the axe and he knew that the beers will bring more energy to handle that axe. Beers contain protein. Your books doesn't help me too much, maybe to make the first fire or wipe my ass when I shit. The knowledge about plants is not hard to learn "on the fly" and as I said, it takes TIME, that in such a apocalyptic situation you do not have too much.

What if immediately after you are released in that world, an animal is coming straight to you. What you gonna do? hit the animal with the book in his head?

In the beginning, there was no paper or pens. You would have to pass on knowledge by word of mouth. And, not to belittle you because I don't know you, your knowledge must be inferior to what a book has. Or don't you think so?

Even that is inferior, you can learn, just by observing. But until then, you need a tool. Without a tool, you are dead in few days or even eaten by a large animal because you cannot defend yourself. Or @Lux is coming and kill you for the book.

If @DarthCoin brings an axe, I'll bring a bow. If I can also bring arrows, that'd be nice.

Maybe a rifle with a lot of bullets would be better but arrows can be reused 👀

Or maybe I should bring a trebuchet so I can use stones I find. Then I can sling stones all day and maybe people far away will see stones flying in the air and be like "that's where we should go" and bring more stuff

If arrows are included in a bow, then a bow. If not, a horse.

But if I'm alone a good knife would always be my choice. That's what everyone recommends for survival.

That should be already in your knowledge "package", information is easy to carry... tools/weapons don't.

An axe would be a great choice and would be on my list if it were possible to add more items. It's true that knowledge could already be part of the luggage, but in all honesty, my knowledge in this area is limited. I choose the book from a long-term perspective and for the purpose of knowledge transfer. Each person will choose a different object because we are all different and have different levels of knowledge in various areas.

true but just think about this aspect: planting and growing stuff, takes time and you can learn it yourself, just by observing nature, testing etc.

The cavemen didn't jumped from caves into agriculture without having first the axe made from stones...

Until a plant will grow and be ready to eat, you need: shelter, fire, food. You said "There are no houses, cars, tools, nothing." that means not even plants ready to eat. Planting needs fertile soil so you need to find one first. maybe you are at kms away from it.

Taking a book with you... you will die after 10 days and you still didn't grow any plant. Good luck with that.

I think it’s also about toxic plants to avoid. Testing is already done (thousands of people died for you, it’s called empirical knowledge) why not just take that with us!? Tools can be built easily with a good survival book. I would not spend a unique choice on an axe.

You will not survive not even 3 days with that book. You will put all your faith in that book and your mind will not be able to distinguish between the true plants and the ones from the book, because you are too hungry, reading and wasting time. Also keep in mind that books are referring to specific regions and maybe you are in a different region where those plants do not grow.

I think if you look at archaeology it will give you an answer. Probably the first things humans made were: arrows, axes, and pots

Don't sleep on pots as they enable certain things very difficult without: Water gathering + Cooking with water (soups/stews where bones are boiled are a great way to extract nutrients from rather meager portions of raw material)
