Why is getting prominent libertarians (i.e. Tom Woods, Dave Smith, etc.) into bitcoin like pulling teeth?
It seems like they'd get it, and I know they are tepidly pro-bitcoin, but why don't they see what we see and support it enthusiastically?
reply
407 sats \ 2 replies \ @TheGuySwann_nostr OP 9 Sep
LMAO, I think its sometimes because libertarians have built a social identity around complaining and defining problems, rather than building or understanding solutions. And i don't even mean that in a super negative way even though it kinda sounds that way. They tend more towards defensive mindset and the kinda of "natural world alternative" so to speak, rather than the cypherpunk technological "solution" to these problems.
Short version: I believe they think more in the framing of politics rather than technological systems.
reply
35 sats \ 0 replies \ @Bell_curve 10 Sep
Agree 1000 percent
They can point out problems but someone else has to implement solutions
No solution is perfect
I have a friend who is very smart and knowledgeable but he focuses too much on the past. Hindsight is perfect vision. The problem with complaining about the past is you fail to see the future. Do not let perfect be the enemy of good.

I saw a few including Woods and Jeffrey Tucker go down the cRyPt0 road, most with Bcash, and it has made them gunshy about bitcoin.
In fact I think some of those old guard libertarians are still bcashers today. Just sad.
THIS is the thing that cryptocurrencies are doing to harm Bitcoin.

Interesting. I don't recall Woods talking about this, but it makes sense considering his attitude towards Bitcoin. He clearly got oversold on some scaling or speed solution.

Woods has had Peter St. Onge and recently Mark Moss on his podcast, both good on bitcoin. So that's reason to be hopeful. He does ask the same basic questions over and over which is frustrating. Tucker seems to be a full blown bcash shitcoiner sadly.

It would be better if it improves and we have things I would like to see as a technological solution, but it's not going anywhere if we don't get those things. Never discount the fact that it fucking works and it seems there's nothing anyone can do about.

As a fellow bitcoin podcaster, I would love to hear your big-brain thoughts on what this recent Nostr+Fountain integration will mean for us long-term.
Get cosmic with me. How will Nostr integration into Podcasting 2.0 & V4V change this industry?
reply
107 sats \ 0 replies \ @TheGuySwann_nostr OP 9 Sep
Cosmic Version:
We've seen the rise of the "side gig" in the past 10-15 years as an increasingly normal and almost required part of the economic system. Nostr, Bitcoin and V4V is going to aggressively build toward solving problems for this market (because people will build it for themselves), which will only continue to grow, and in another 10-20 years the majority of small business around the entire globe will exist in this ecosystem in some form or fashion. Like not having a website eventually became a really stupid thing for any business in the 2000s and 2010s, not having a Nostr ID and social graph, not having bitcoin integrated into what you do, and not connecting to the networks that leverage these tools will look like using a fax machine. It'll be leaving seriously good money on the table, imo.

Nah never went full carnivore, but I've been "paleo" (or something basically that) for a really long time. Meat and animal fats are certainly my dominant source of protein and energy. When i deviate i notice it very quickly too. A couple of days eating like crap and I pay for it quickly. I always end up going on a steak cleanse to get back to baseline, lol.
My diet staples though are bacon and eggs, steak, lots of fruit, some grain free "breads" from time to time, almond milk/butter (occasionally), sweet potato, and some sort of yogurt on occasion.

Favorites when i was younger:
Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley, 311, Nirvana, a lot of alternative rock and some classic 90s pop is always a go to.
Today i listen to a larger variety of music, but less often. Probably my favorite band right now is Twenty One Pilots and we listen to that a lot in our house, but I also love orchestral music, film composers and soundtracks, and more electronic mood music. I can binge that stuff for hours while I'm working on ideas and/or writing.

You arrive in a new city and you go to a small grocery shop to buy some drinks. You have cash, fiat cards and bitcoin with you.
What kind of shops you are looking for (in terms of what kind of payment accepted)?
a - it doesn't matter for you
b - those willing to accept BTC, but not yet
c - only those that already accept BTC
What would you do when is about to pay to the cashier that is also the owner of the establishment:
a - just pay with visa card, no questions asked
b - pay with fiat cash hoping that will be accepted
c - (you do not see any sign they accept BTC) you ask nicely if they accept BTC payment.
If they say "no, they do not accept BTC":
- you just pull out the visa card and pay
- you insist to help them learn more about BTC
- just pay in cash and no further talk If they say "yes":
- you still pay with visa card
- you pull out your LN wallet and pay

first part:
a. I don't really focus on it alot, but if there are places that i know accept bitcoin i will always go there and try them out. But i don't specifically avoid anything else because they dont, and i very often bring it up if there is any opportunity to when i go anywhere.
Second part:
c. and then i just use my visa. but i always add a little comment about why btc would be more convenient for me or why they should accept it. Never pushy, just cordial and/or playful. I think being pushy will associate being annoyed with hearing about bitcoin, and I think that works against us. If its just a tool out there that it seems like people are using, then they are more likely to look into it, imo.

I ask questions or make comments that lead to talking about money, inflation, and the general discourse of the world today, and then talk about how the design of our money contributes to it (as long as there seems genuine engagement), and then it ends up at bitcoin pretty quickly. I mostly just talk about how life is living on bitcoin all the time, both frustrations and benefits. Mostly my goal is to normalize it and make people feel that it's not odd at all to live on/with bitcoin.

"The bitcoin standard is when you do not use anymore fiat..."
That's not true, its when you don't use fiat for your standard anymore. I do not measure my wealth in fiat, I do not think in fiat gains. The dollar is simply the payment network with the widest reach. A bitcoin standard is when you simply stop having fiat as the default and its no longer how you weigh the value of anything in your financial or personal life, imo.
reply
21 sats \ 3 replies \ @TheGuySwann_nostr OP 9 Sep
Also specifically in response to the "whether you use visa," yes i have normal banking and a visa card. I simply cycle it every month into/out of btc. Nothing in fiat stays in fiat unless its needed where i can't use bitcoin within the period of this month.

Both. Can't choose.
The Pear Stack and Nostr but have enormous potential and for slightly different reasons. I really kinda think that the more time goes on, the pear stack will be a dominant way of delivering files, resources, and building your own networks between devices, while nostr will serve largely as a global identity, social graph, and payment directory on top of it.
In other words, I think both are trying to be the entire stack, and I think each will settle into their "optimal place" in a combined stack... at least it intuitively seems taht way to me right now.

First "smart" is very hard to define, but let's say I'm thinking "intuitively smart." As in, able to adapt, take in new information and merge it into current worldview, immediately understand and expand on the implications, etc... first come to mind Dhruv Bansal, Jeff Booth, maybe someone like that. But there's so many different kinds of smart and reasons or levels on which to value someone's input. I don't think there is a hard way to compare people on that metric. The list could easily include like 30 people I know for different reasons, imo.

I listened to your recent chat with barak. It was mind numbing and almost like listening to someone talk fiat technical analysis. Why are these soft forks needed when bitcoin is still early in its adoption? Lighting already does a decent job at handling scaling for the early adopters of bitcoin. Where do you stand on the soft fork proposals.
reply
131 sats \ 0 replies \ @TheGuySwann_nostr OP 9 Sep
lol, yeah i can get that. Honestly as much as CTV and CSFS would give a lot of cool benefits for building novel systems, its not necessary. Bitcoin is fine with or without them honestly and we haven't nearly exhausted the potential for the technology that is available to us today.
I really think its just because its fun to talk about new things we can build and new ways we can solve problems, and doing the grueling work to REALLY get the previous era of tech working in the most robust and complete fashion is less exciting... thus the soft forks get more attention and buzz, rather then the hard work of building out what we already have.
But i don't think its an emergency or some disaster that we don't get it, or even that it just takes 7 years to get some basic covenant proposal that is both very low risk and highly desirable. Probably makes sense to actually build out full working versions of things that need CTV before any serious discussion of a soft fork should be considered anyway.

reply
52 sats \ 1 reply \ @TheGuySwann_nostr OP 9 Sep
hmm, probably in building the alternative networks to make the bitcoin ecosystem more robust against corporate or state capture. This is where I think nostr and the pear stack will play a massive role.
People forget that a huge part of Bitcoin's security is ensuring that the narrative and perspective around it can't be manipulated. Social media is an attack vector at the social layer. Building routes around central points of control and manipulation in simple information propagation is really important.
Luckily I think we've understood this intuitively, even if not in the explicit context of defending Bitocin, and we've made huge leaps in a very short span of time.

The Name of the Wind
Mistborn
and honestly maybe The Martian, i really loved that book. Great pacing and very cinematic in structure.
But this is also an impossible question, because i also consider "best" "favorite" and those terms to be hard to pin down. For example, the films and books I respect more than any other because of the sheer depth of the story and novelty of what they tell, also aren't often the ones I read or watch over and over again. So are they my "favorite" or are the ones I've seen 20 times, and maybe even think are a little stupid in some ways, but love that about them, are they my favorite?
Tons more could make the list that I've loved but only read/listened to a single time; Foundation, Dune, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Dresden Files (silly at times but really fun series), numerous Brandon Sanderson books, etc.
I also find myself diving into fantasy more than sci-fi most of the time. But as is the common trope, "sci-fi is just fantasy with rivets." So hard to say one or the other most of the time, lol

I agree and disagree in a sense. For someone to truly be on a bitcoin standard, they shift the mindset to weighing everything against the bitcoin cost and potential, and using bitcoin as their dominant monetary tool. But I also don't agree that someone not using bitcoin directly, "isn't really using it," simply because they aren't getting the value out of it.
Analogy, my grandmother is using the internet when she calls someone on the landline, but she doesn't know it and doesn't get any of the real benefits that the internet offers, but she definitely is using it and no longer has to pay long distance rates because of it.
So part of me agrees in a sense, that there will have to be a big shift in mental framing, and I think it will happen naturally, but it will never permeate to everyone. We are social creatures by our nature. There will be plenty of people who "adopt" bitcoin without knowing or caring why, they will simply use it because its the largest network of people demanding it for trade and unwilling to accept fiat trash.
