I know this has become a little obsession with me, and I know many stackers think this is a pointless endeavour. Still, @k00b and @ek have put a lot of work into developing SN as a non custodial site. Now that we have more options, I'm curious to know the rate of adoption. Indulge me.

I cut the cord.

First I used LNC besides payments failing from time to time it worked great until LNC went down for me for some unknown reason

Then I switched to NWC using alby hub. And it works for the most part but I always get 5 to 10 failed payments it seems like per day or every few days

The auto withdrawal feature worked like a charm. Works great. As someone who doesn’t get a ton of lightning payments it’s often cool to see tiny payments be made to my node.

On one hand I see Darth’s argument but I side with you. What’s the point of LN if a node can’t consistently handle 1 sat payments a few thousand times a day. The more we use it the better we can improve the protocol to meet the needs of the users.

Do you have a channel open with our node? I very rarely get a failure unless I zap someone with a Zeus lightning address (and they don't open their app in time) or I'm zapping @ek 1 sat which tends to fail going to phoenixd.

Many routing nodes will start (if they didn't already) to limit the min_HTLC routed. Especially in high fees environment. And then you will see how many of the stackers will complain about their failed 1-10-100 even 1000 sats zaps on SN.

Yes, a direct channel with SN maybe could fix somehow the issue, but that is not the main problem here.

Yes. Very soon we will have to if we still want to use sats on the site. With your mining setup it should be easy. You can hook up to a node using NWC (nostr wallet connect).

Alright. Thanks to @k00b help I have broken free. Using coinos for sending and receiving now. What's your thoughts on crowdfunding and ponying up some sats for bounties for anyone that wants to put together tutorials on each of the viable external wallet options and they can be posted in bitcoin beginners. I am in for 10k sats.

I think SN was already planning something like that. If not, sure, I'm in. The only issue might be quality control. Someone would have to test the guides.

Is there a hard cutoff coming? I visit the site pretty regularly but can't say I'm fully aware of what's happening with the wallet situation. It's possible I missed an announcement or maybe wasn't paying enough attention.

In short, this is my way of saying there are still some of us casual visitors who don't know what's happening. :)

Any sats in their account at the time of the switch will stay and always stay available for withdrawal.

I feel the same way for my blog. Embellishing the design and adding a subscribe button may perhaps bring me more views, but I feel that doing so drains and distracts me from my writing. To me, writing on SN isn’t work, but learning how to figure out non-custodial solutions is.

I've set up NWC with Albyhub but it's not working as it is meant to be. It stays with the custodial wallet send/receive even though I have NWC green light connected.

@ek walked me through it the other day. You need to choose "read only" option for permissions when setting up your receive connection.

Sending is much more straightforward. Just pick a budget and copy /paste your pairing secret into the SN NWC connect send box.

You need to make two separate NWC connections. I call mine SN Send and SN receive. (Clever, huh?!!)

Is pointless to have 1-10-100-1000 sats zaps back and forth from numerous self-custodial LN nodes. That's why also I do not like the nostr zaps. It creates too much friction for nothing. Node runners zapping on SN in a non custodial way, will put more pressure on their own nodes: force closing channels, cheating, errors, liquidity, fees etc...

And comes the question: for what? For a meaningless zap?

You are the one who teaches us that each sat is important and valuable. As time goes on that will be more true. The LN was built to handle small transactions. You may be right that LN can't handle it, but we should find out. Also, someone on SN recently bought a canister of gas to cook for her family with what she earned here on SN. That's not meaningless. Even a few sats will soon buy a cup of coffee or maybe a whole breakfast before too long.

That's why I am saying that cowboy credits are better way to use SN. A poor guy that do not have enough liquidity to run a proper LN node and to pay fees for each zap will made on SN, will find out that is better to use custodial "cowboy credits" until a reasonable limit and then move out, or move in (deposit) is they need more credits.

Let me ask you a question that's related to this. What if a stacker just used either his own node setup or Alby Hub, or some easy neutrino node, and just opened one big, private channel with SN. Would that be pretty frictionless with little risk of closure?

Also, maybe we are talking about different things here. I was under the impression that cowboy credits can never be converted to bitcoin. They seem valueless to me. If you're right that cowboy credits can be converted to bitcoin, I agree with you completely.

Remember what is a HTLC (a LN payment): a not yet broadcast onchain payment that is bigger than 540 sats. Anything else is dust.

Yes, it cost way too much to cheat stealing this HTLC, but still remain as dust. Yes, in some cases, when we pay let's say 100 sats for a slice of bread, it probably make sense, but sending zaps back and forth between users on a public forum, with no practical gain other than upvoting, it doesn't make sense to me to use a non-custodial node.
