I'm watching Captains Courageous tonight. People have been telling me to watch it for years. Now I know why. Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore. Great old movie (1937) If @carlosfandango is around I would like to hear his take.
reply
Haven’t seen that in a while. A wonderful film which goes so very deep. It’s of its time - not sure the accent helps Tracy in an otherwise great performance - but thoroughly enjoyable and does go for the heart strings.
reply

Yes. Very sentimental. I have not seen many Spencer Tracy movies before. Any other recommendations? I also saw Sergeant York for the first time the other day. I haven't seen much Gary Cooper other than Pride Of The Yankees.
reply
Well, Tracy did a couple of courtroom films but I’m not personally a huge fan; ‘Inherit the Wind’ is better than ‘Adam’s Rib’, Judgement at Nuremberg is excellent. For light relief there is the original ‘Father of the Bride’ although I actually prefer the Steve Martin version..
For a good Cooper film try ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ or ‘High Noon’. If Mrs Siggy is out you could watch ‘Morocco’… :) I think he did ‘The Fountainhead’ (based on the Ayn Rand book) but I haven’t seen it and may be mistaken.

My new year's resolution is to always tell the truth and not to argue with my friends and family.
Arguing is a waste of time.
reply
Latin arguere "make clear, make known, prove, declare, demonstrate."
a well-structured beautiful argument can lift a veil of lies gently and slowly, to reveal both the lies and the truth and how they weigh against each other on the scales of justice.
that's usually not my style of arguing a point, but for someone i really care about, it sometimes approaches this style.
reply
I guess it's not to be confused with:
Latin argutare "to prattle, prate."
I guess this is apt, since this is how many arguments sound.
reply
Interesting. Never looked into the etymology of this. It is not about saying, I think you're wrong because I am right, but rather, I think I'm right, and here's why. Perhaps this requires an interlocutor the feels the same way, since often when I'm trying to make something clear, the other person misinterprets it as though I am saying, "you are wrong".
reply
when i argue with my grandmother, who has escaped the fall of communism, about the current state of things, we push very strong arguments onto each other, and our conversation sounds like a fight. surprisingly, we arrive at the same conclusions, through different arguments. she is extremely well-read in a variety of subjects, and i am likewise.
the biggest point we still disagree on is that she advocates to only care about my immediate family circle, whereas i strive to raise the collective consciousness beyond my immediate family circle. i think it depends on how much stamina and resources one has to spend into the world. life under communism really drains people's energy.

Social differences have always existed and will continue to exist, but what I cannot forgive is parents sending their children to work while they do nothing, if I know that they do nothing because I am tired of seeing mothers sitting comfortably under a tree, while their children are begging in the streets.

19 David Goggins Quotes: #826070
reply
Hi, the topic is somewhat related to the holidays, because it's about relationships with people. Recently, I admit that I was pretty harsh because a friend broke up with his girlfriend and the first thing he did was go on Tinder, saying the goal was just to talk to people, vent, etc., because of the anonymity or whatever. I called him desperate because he's looking for connections online. This led to him getting offended and only pointing out that I should shut up since I don't have a girlfriend and I'm not looking. However, I thought to myself that, actually, corporations are increasingly controlling us, which is why I’m getting more and more repulsed by apps like Tinder:
Thermomix - recipes paid via subscription
YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, or X - entertainment content and other posts
Pornhub - erotica
Tinder - soulmate
And I wonder, it's not even about us objectifying ourselves with these random systems, but rather a bigger problem: who knows when Tinder or similar companies might get money from the pharmaceutical industry to secretly adjust algorithms to match people with genetic flaws. People may not even know about it, but it might resonate specifically when matching certain individuals, and the pharmaceutical industry would profit from sick societies. Another issue is that we’re increasingly being pushed into a subscription system, and who knows when we’ll reach extreme situations, or when some company might come up with a crazy idea, like offering leg amputations with subscriptions for mobility, such as a premium package to be able to run 18 km per hour or something like that.
I admit that I see Bitcoin as something that could stop such actions, but I might have an illusion of that because, by nature, people who study cryptography tend to be skeptical of corporations and would slow down such actions, and they would share my view.
Another fact is that I’m a bit disgusted by the idea of searching for my other half in my area because I live in quite an insular place, with many people from my family living here. My mother’s and father’s families meet in three places over the last four generations (thank God, without any incestuous connections). And especially the idea of doing it through apps that often have distance filters, where these filters usually favor proximity. In my case, the farther away, the better.
reply
I think online dating is just another tool to connect people. Porn, hookups, love all of this stuff has been going on since time and memorial.
reply
I know that it has always been there and I do not deny it, I just see the threat in the fact that anyone can easily use it against humanity for the sake of profit.

I admit it's an interesting topic and I didn't know that. Interesting facts? Even though I'll be 20 in July, I've never been attracted to the opposite sex, so to speak, but I happen to have this interesting affliction regarding my sense of smell that once during a lesson at school, a couple of friends were eating pancakes with bananas and chocolate behind me and I turned around loudly during the lesson, are you normal? Do you drink beer during the lesson? (because it stank so much) I turned around completely and wait a minute, there was no beer and oh fuck, sorry, as usual my sense of smell deceived me. Maybe the reason is my broken sense of smell hahaha

I just looked it up, no, I was talking about something your body naturally does, not even you are able to control it. 👀 then it's interesting to see so many dating Apps or modern inventions are trying to hack our bodies, yet many things go beyond the surface, eg. genetic.

Also, you missed about 30 books.

Depends if you count his son's books as part of the canon.
Not 100% sure on this, but all of the 'real' Dune books start with the word Dune, where as his son's books do not.

True, and I know Natalia knows about the books. I'm just giving her a hard time.
I want to make sure a random reader knows there's more than the screen adaptations, because the books are awesome.

Met up with my dad. Called up an ex-student and listened to him share about his struggles with fatherhood. Binge-watched Squid Game Season 2 by skipping parts and just focusing on the aspects that I would enjoy. Yes, I finished all 7 episodes. Organised my children’s toy mountain and hid some away in unused shelves. Watched the Six Triple Eight and got inspired. Super eventful day!
