I really don't understand how people still use these products.

I’ve never once had an ad show up for something I’ve talked about. Then again I stay off of social media, run ad blockers, and have my browsers clear everything on shutdown. I also feel like a tool talking to my devices so I never use their smart assistants.

Im sure if apple is doing it, the other ones will also have lawsuits coming up.
Just a matter of time.
Unless everyone becomes less sensitive to it?

I think most people just say "yeah, I thought so", and accept it.

That is how I feel.
Even though we are losing our privacy, people are okay with it because of the help it gives them.
People dont realize its encroaching on their rights.
Soon they might disappear.

Have you ever had one of those instances where you are talking about something and then you go to Google it and it populates with the exact thing you were talking as soon as you start typing?

Yes, many times. It's creepy and insane that they're allowed to get away with this

Yes. That's the point of the lawsuit. Siri is turned on surreptitiously.

The wildest part is that Apple can settle but still don't admit they were actually doing it.

Some times it does seem like a coincidence. If I say “I wonder what the score of the game is” and then go to google and start typing in MLB it is highly likely it is going to suggest mb scores.
But the craziest one I have had is a few years ago we were Christmas shopping at Indigo which is our version of Barnes and Noble and I mentioned this board game they had on sale to my wife as I thought my son might like it. I have never seen this game before or looked up anything similar. I wanted to find out what the reviews for the game were like and I go to google and literally the first letter I type the name of the game pops up. That was so creepy. Only possible if it was listening.

reply

You mention Google, well check all your google apps and the permissions they have to access camera, mic, etc... in your phone settings, it happens on android too.

Wake up, convenience provided by big tech is a trap, people have no problem (willingly or not) giving up their data and privacy to the highest bidder just so that they don't have to think
reply
41 sats \ 0 replies \ @Undisciplined 4 Jan
Some people live in blissful ignorance.
Others just accept the convenience-privacy tradeoff.
I see the appeal of the latter, because I do often feel like privacy is a fool's errand.

Just imagine that!! I wonder which three-letter agency had their hand in this situation. I don’t know if Apple would have done this, otherwise. They aren’t in the same category as Google, Facebook and Twitter(before X) are.

Cost of doing business.
I’ll bet the data they harvest illegally with Siri is worth 20x a petty fine like $95mil.

Violating your customers' privacy is simply low risk and high reward—essentially a no-brainer.
Btw, let me guess, you posted this in ~security because ~privacy was too expensive. I don't mind, just find it interesting. I would have done the same in your position 👀

Is there any good reason to throw good sats down the drain? Whoever is running ~privacy is asking everyone to go elsewhere, as long as there is competition. Perhaps the territory owner needs to reflect a bit upon economics.
