There is a bet on Predyx about SN reaching 1.4M items in 2025 or not:

@denlillaapan is creating regular posts about how bad this bet is going for me:

This is the latest chart:

I agree, it doesn't look good. But It's So Early, right?!

But it won't be so early forever. Therefore, I have decided that I can't sit back anymore and pretend like I don't feel like this:

But on the other hand, I haven't even started to do something about it. But today we will reclaim our homeworld like in this opening cinematic of Legacy of the Void:

Let's make @denlillaapan cry and the next chart look like this!

But @ek, you have just posted a bunch of memes and haven't explained at all what the bounty is about???

You are right! I got carried away. But the title already explains most of it:

  • whoever has the most comments in this post wins
  • deadline is on Monday, April 28, 0:00 UTC (timezone converter)

But wait! This isn't a winner takes all:

🥇 1st place gets 25k sats
🥈 2nd place gets 12.5k sats
🥉 3rd place gets 7.5k sats
4th place gets 5k sats
5th place gets 2.5k sats

everyone above 100 comments gets 1k sats

btw, we're also engaged since today, see #948336.

25,000 sats bounty

ADDENDUM

  • Freebie comments don't count
  • New accounts that look like bots that have been created to only win this bounty also don't count so save your sats

A chicken once lived for 18 months without a head. Mike the chicken's incredible feat was recorded back in the 1940s in the USA. He survived as his jugular vein and most of his brainstem were left mostly intact, ensuring just enough brain function remained for survival. In the majority of cases, a headless chicken dies in a matter of minutes.

reply

I realized late what @grayruby was trying to say. I think I killed the fun for so many. Spamming definitely can make me win this, but what about others? I'm sure @ek wanted equal participation, but it turned out that spamming made newcomers scared, seeing that there was no way they could win this, and as a result, they left. I feel really bad rn. It's just four or five of us who are a big part of these 9.4k comments (right now as I write). I saw the first two or three leaderboards when this started, and I see that those who were ruling #1, #2, #3, and #4 respectively now don't hang around here because they cannot spam like I dk. I'll say they're the true winners. I'm sure they want to see SN having 1.4 million items in 2025, but not with "Moar," "same," and the stupid comments I made. I thought what I was doing was fun, but no, it ruined the fun for everyone else. I'm feeling a lot of guilt and dilemma now, like I spent time here to boost my count, but would it be wise to leave now because of this guilt? Also, this is near the end as well. CC: @denlillaapan, @OT

reply

Totally.

This is a bit what i predicted, too. There's just no way efforts like these make SN better... or that ek, ostensibly in the game to grow SN and make it better, would keep supporting it.

It was the incentive, though, so can't really blame anyone

reply

IDK, it was a bit of fun. Fun because it was essentially trying to manipulate a bet and pretty much all rules had been thrown out the window.

I ended up having better things to do and so lost my place.

I also think newcomers could have ignored the whole thing pretty easily too.

I think you're right OT. I'm just thinking to much! Thanks

The human tongue has a unique surface pattern, much like fingerprints, which can be used for biometric identification. This "tongue print" is distinct for each individual and remains stable over time, making it a potential tool in security and healthcare applications. Additionally, the common belief that specific taste zones exist on the tongue (e.g., sweet at the tip) is a debunked myth—the entire tongue detects all basic tastes, though certain areas may have slight variations in sensitivity.

You’d expect Japanese feudal lords to live in pristine houses with the sturdiest materials – and that is mostly true, save for their squeaky, creaky floors. Nightingale floors were flooring systems that “chirped” when somebody walked on it. They were installed in temples and palaces to alert of intruders. The floors were built in a way that the flooring nails rub against jackets or clamps, causing squeaking noises.

In the mid-1990s, the mailing list became a tool for prank mailbombing. Trolls would subscribe unsuspecting victims to the list, flooding their inboxes with hundreds of daily messages debating encryption algorithms, libertarian politics, and abstract rants about digital privacy. One sysop joked that the deluge of messages-often including heated arguments about PGP keys or rants against the NSA-was so overwhelming that recipients would beg to be unsubscribed. The chaos forced the list’s administrators to implement a "reply-to-subscribe" system to deter mischief-makers.

reply
reply

The list’s name itself was a playful jab-coined by Jude Milhon during an early meeting by mashing "cipher" with "cyberpunk." Members embraced the term, even as outsiders often misheard it as "cyberpunks" or "cipher punks" (leading to confused questions about whether they were hacking gangs or punk bands).

The absurdity peaked when debates about anonymous remailers or digital cash would spiral into Shakespearean flame wars, with members using encryption jargon as verbal weaponry. One archived thread shows a user sarcastically proposing to "encrypt my cat" to prove a point about privacy-a nod to the list’s blend of tech idealism and chaotic humor.

It was digital rebellion meets inbox terrorism, proving even privacy activists couldn’t escape internet trolls.

Air is the mixture of gases that makes up Earth's atmosphere, surrounding the planet's surface and held by gravity. It consists primarily of:

Nitrogen (N₂): about 78.08% by volume

Oxygen (O₂): about 20.95% by volume

Argon (Ar): approximately 0.93%

Carbon dioxide (CO₂): around 0.04%

Trace amounts of other gases such as neon, helium, methane, krypton, and hydrogen.

reply

youhouu

reply

In addition to these permanent gases, air contains variable amounts of water vapor, averaging about 1% at sea level but ranging from nearly 0% to over 3% depending on humidity and temperature. Water vapor plays a crucial role in weather and climate by forming clouds and precipitation and acting as a greenhouse gas.

reply

youhouu

reply

Air also contains suspended particles known as aerosols, including dust, pollen, sea spray, and human-made pollutants, which affect air quality and weather phenomena.

The atmosphere acts as a protective shield by:

Blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun via the ozone layer

Moderating Earth's temperature through the greenhouse effect

Protecting the surface from meteoroids

Redistributing heat and moisture globally through air currents.

reply

youhouu

reply

The composition of air has changed over Earth's history due to volcanic activity, biological evolution (notably photosynthesis increasing oxygen), and more recently, human activities causing climate change and pollution.

In summary, air is a vital, dynamic mixture of gases and particles essential for life, climate regulation, and environmental processes on Earth.

The 1993 Cypherpunk Manifesto by Eric Hughes also offers a snapshot of the movement’s ethos. Hughes famously declared:

"Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age… We cannot expect governments, corporations, or other large, faceless organizations to grant us privacy… We must defend our own privacy if we expect to have any."

What Is Fire?
Fire is the rapid oxidation of a fuel in an exothermic chemical process known as combustion, which releases heat, light, and various reaction products. The visible effect of this process-the flame-is produced when the fuel reaches its ignition point and combusts with oxygen in the air.

The Fire Triangle
Three elements are essential for fire to occur, often referred to as the "fire triangle":

Fuel: Any combustible material (solid, liquid, or gas)

Oxygen: Usually from the air

Heat: Sufficient to reach the fuel’s ignition temperature

If any one of these elements is removed, the fire will extinguish.

Chemical Process
During combustion:

The fuel is heated until it releases gases (if it’s not already a gas).

These gases react with oxygen, producing new molecules (mainly carbon dioxide and water vapor) and releasing energy as heat and light.

The process is self-sustaining as long as enough heat, fuel, and oxygen are present.

The basic combustion equation is:

fuel+oxygen→carbon dioxide+water+heat

Incomplete combustion can produce other byproducts, such as carbon monoxide.

reply

Characteristics of Flames
Flames are the most visible part of fire and consist of hot gases.

Their color and intensity depend on the type of fuel and the composition of surrounding gases.

At high temperatures, gases may become ionized, forming plasma.

Flame temperatures vary: a candle burns at 800–1000°C, while oxy-acetylene flames can exceed 3000°C.

reply

Types of Fire
Fires are classified based on the type of fuel involved:

Class Fuel Type Examples Extinguishing Method
A Solid organic material Wood, paper, fabric Water
B Flammable liquids Gasoline, oil, alcohol Foam, powder, CO₂
C Flammable gases Propane, methane, natural gas CO₂, dry powder, cut supply

reply

Effects and Uses
Positive Effects:

Stimulates plant growth and maintains ecological balance

Used by humans for cooking, heating, signaling, propulsion, smelting, and waste disposal

Negative Effects:

Can cause destruction to life and property, atmospheric pollution, and water contamination

What Is the Universe?
The universe is everything that exists: all of space and time, and everything contained within them. This includes all matter and energy, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest galactic structures, as well as the physical laws that govern them.

Galaxies and Stars: The universe contains billions of galaxies, each with millions or billions of stars. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is just one among at least 100 billion in the observable universe.

In 1992, May read his "Crypto Anarchist Manifesto" at the founding meeting of the Cypherpunks, a group of privacy activists who believed cryptography could dismantle state power. The manifesto, written in 1988, predicted anonymous digital markets and untraceable currencies-ideas that seemed outlandish at the time but later materialized in Bitcoin and Silk Road.

reply

A telling moment occurred during the "BlackNet" thought experiment May proposed: an anonymous, encrypted marketplace for trading secrets (e.g., corporate data, government leaks). He joked that even the plans for BlackNet itself could be sold on BlackNet-a self-referential paradox highlighting crypto-anarchy’s potential for chaotic, self-sustaining systems.

reply

Years later, May grew disillusioned with the "crypto hype" of the 2010s, quipping that Bitcoin enthusiasts had strayed from the original anti-state vision. He once compared modern crypto projects to "barbed wire"-a metaphor from his manifesto for systems that restrict freedom-ironic, since he’d initially used "barbed wire" to represent government control that cryptography would cut through.

Another lighthearted story involves a neighbor playing loud music late at night, so a friend plugged his device into their shared wall outlet and hit the button to briefly cut the power, effectively silencing the music without confrontation.

In 1892, steel workers at Carnegie’s Homestead plant clashed with Henry Clay Frick, who was determined to break their union. Goldman and Berkman, radical anarchists running an ice cream shop in Massachusetts, saw the strike as a catalyst for revolution. Berkman attempted to assassinate Frick, shooting him twice in the neck. Frick survived, and Berkman was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The botched attack backfired spectacularly: public sympathy shifted against the strikers, and the union was crushed. Goldman later wrote that Berkman’s act of “propaganda by the deed” became a cautionary tale about the risks of isolated violence.

For a darker example: Luigi Galleani’s followers in the early 1900s were notorious for bombings. After one failed plot, bomb-maker Carlo Buda quipped, “You heard Galleani speak, and you were ready to shoot the first policeman you saw.” This zeal led to the 1920 Wall Street bombing, which killed 38 people and marked the peak of anarchist violence in the U.S..

Another striking anecdote involves David Graeber, an anarchist anthropologist and Occupy Wall Street organizer. During early planning meetings in 2011, Graeber and fellow activists rejected traditional protest structures. Instead of marching with banners, they sat in a circle at Bowling Green Park, debating leaderless organizing. This informal group-composed of anarchists, Zapatista sympathizers, and squatters-became the nucleus of Occupy, which popularized the slogan “We Are the 99%.” Graeber later reflected on the irony of journalists turning to him (a theorist) to explain the “leaderless” movement.
