Happiness Journal 16/52/25
Had to relieve a teacher’s Secondary 3 class and got them to do a listening comprehension exercise as she had requested. One section was about identifying the conversational partner’s opinion, which could be quite tedious to go through for easily distracted teens.
So, I got them to copy down the transition lines:
ā€œI understand your concern, butā€¦ā€ ā€œI see your point, butā€¦ā€
As you know, these transition lines are useful for articulating your position across, but they are useless in preserving marital bliss.
So, I taught this class of bright-eyed teenagers about how they ought to replace ā€˜but’ with ā€˜and’ so that they don’t irritate their future spouse with fake empathy. I then demonstrated how to express a contrarian view while acknowledging the other party’s point of view.
I don’t know how much these kids took in (some of them put their heads on the desk in spite of my animated explanations), but I feel pretty good that I taught them how to navigate exams AND life within the same lesson.

i once learned that saying "but" basically invalidates the previous sentence; that is an excellent teaching point for the kids; i particularly like when people do not echo or rephrase my statement, and instead continue elaborating on my thought from their perspective; this is akin to riding waves together rather than bouncing a ball back and forth;

Oh I love your analogies at the end! Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I have never tried that interesting transition, ā€œI understand your concern, but ā€¦ā€ with my wife. I am not quite sure I would even think of trying it!!1 To me, at least, it just looks like I would be hunting and trolling for a swift smackdown, at the very least. My best response for these situations is just biting my tongue!

Maybe our wives could join an oni baba social group together 😁

And we can form a support group 😭

If my wife heard or saw me calling her onibaba, I don’t know if my head would remain on my shoulders or not!!! This baba just doesn’t go. When I was watching Dragon Ball in Japan and uranai baba came up I didn’t quite understand it and asked her. Then I called her baba….. I have never done it again since then, don’t think I ever will.

I only call my wife that in front of her friends because she can’t kill me in polite company, even if she wants to. Haha
Cute story!
