My driver's license is expired. When we moved to Texas I never bothered getting a new ID, and renewed my CA DL which has my Texas home address (which delights most bouncers, "I've never seen this before"). When I fly, I've been flying using my passport book. I'm thinking about getting a passport card because I'd like to be annoying and not get a REAL ID.

Can you still get DLs without REAL ID? Do you have REAL ID?

Washington State still offers DL without RealID, but you can't fly with it.

I suspect there are other states that do the same.

As Fara's I know, Texas is not one of them.

Hmm I guess I'll just renew my CA one again ... assuming they don't require REAL ID which they shouldn't considering they're really against voter id stuff.

Got a CA DL that’s not a Real ID in April. I also use my passport card for flying, it’s not an issue.

It feels like I have to renew my Hazmat endorsement all the fucking time. Yea I have a real ID.

To be clear, the government requires me to have fingerprints on file to carry hazardous materials, so I'm already cooked.

I'm literally a charged, convicted, and forgotten outlaw IRL, however it's not in the fLoCcHaIn of PRonGResUSSshitforbrains so my vote was probably "not applicable, show me data"

Last time I renewed my DL in Alaska, I was able to get a non-realID license option, but it wasn't required to fly at the time. I prefer to use my passport as ID while keeping my license as just a license.

Now that it is required to fly, I'm worried that option won't exist anymore, but I haven't asked.

i don't, using my passport til it expires then I'll see what the landscape looks like. I think my state (OR) still offers the non real ID option.

NY still offers standard ID and I would recommend avoiding REAL ID if you already have a passport

I think the real ID is leftover from 9-11 to keep people off of planes or something. I'm not exactly sure why we need it other than perhaps voting, since 9-11 has been a long time ago without a follow up.

Due for a renewal next year, I think we can still get non Real-ID ones here but the cost is the same regardless... and I think both still require a trip to the DMV... so not sure what favor I'd be doing myself not to get one.

Flying with the passport has been fine, but thats one less thing I'd need to bring with me domestically, or redundancy in a lost bag/wallet situation.

Are you sure it's not a real ID? Does it have a star in the right hand corner?

All Texas driver licenses and identification cards, both compliant (star) and non-compliant (no star) are valid until the expiration date shown on the card. If you replaced or renewed your card after October 10, 2016, and have a star in the right-hand corner, your card is REAL ID compliant and no further action is required on your part. You may continue to use your compliant card for federal identification purposes until it expires.¹

I was about to say yeah no its def a REAL ID Texas has had REAL ID for a minute in fact I had an "old" one that the Federal Government didnt approve... it had the star but not the photo of you and so they had to redo it lol

oh cool. They got me. I was under the impression that the process was different for the real ID. Like I said, it wasn’t mentioned at all, so I take that to mean one does not have a choice anymore. But then what does being “compliant” mean?

No not in Texas. I had to renew mine in Feb. and by default they are now REAL ID's

I dont think the state wanted to have to deal with two production lines to be honest.

I do. It doesn't bother me because the gov't already has all that info about me anyway.

What did bother me was that to get my RealID I had to put a lot of information onto a website, id.me, that looked like a third party vendor. I have no idea how secure it is/was, and that made me uncomfortable.

But they are different orgs (state vs fed). They might share info, but it is not that easy. I was in a situation where one state prosecutor expressed in traffic court they were unable to pull my info since my drivers license belongs to another state.

That's kind of my query. If they know all that info about you, why would they need you to give it to them. I suspect they're too incompetent or legally unable to put all the info together themselves and it's in different silos in different jurisdictions.

It's a federal check on the states rolls since some states were (are?) issuing ID's willy nilly to "undocumented" persons, the Real ID shows the state issued the ID based on information DHS should already have.

The fact that you got a CA ID with a TX address shows that CA ID's are not serious from a federal perspective, I doubt you'd be able to get a CA Real ID with a TX address.
