pull down to refresh

My goals are weight loss, reducing brain fog and Alzheimer's prevention.

It's not my first, but why?

I ate everything over Christmas, and I'm feeling good that I can clear out that social food olympics :)

Nice. I’m trying to fast more too, also to clear out the holiday foods.

I prefer OMAD to prolonged fasting though.

reply

I found skipping breakfast usually kept my waist line in check.

The hardest thing about fasting/OMAD is when to eat socially.

Partner finds it awfully lonely/weird to eat alone at home.

I can totally relate. I love breaking bread together.

reply

Back when I fasted (I'm doing carnivore now, I like it lots more) I would sit down with the family during meals. It didn't really bother me, and it's a lot more social.

I used to spend a lot of time thinking about fasting, planning and scheduling a fast. And I always dreaded it. Fasting has obvious benefits, but it's not sustainable, obviously, and not a life-long habit. Carnivore is much, much easier than regular fasting for me, and the benefits are enormous.

reply

Intermittent fasting can be easy to maintain, especially if it’s more of a habit than a strict restriction.

reply

My fasting was always 2 or 3 days. I think once I went to 4 days.

I absolutely dreaded it. I know some people love it, and get a fasting "high", and lots of mental clarity. Not me, I just watched cooking videos.

There were definitely some interesting things that happened, though. For instance - eyes become completely white, no red veins anywhere. Inflammation going down, or maybe autophagy?

reply

Same. I always dreaded a multiday fast.

Just waiting until later in the day to eat one big beautiful meal is totally different.

Fasting can't be a long life habit. e.g fasting every Thursday or rolling fasts.

But I am a fan of carnivore too. Seen a couple friends completely transform.

Count me in as one of those people who've transformed via carnivore. I've written it up in stacker news quite a bit. Here's some of those posts.

Yeah, because I work early we wouldn’t eat breakfast together either way.

So, I just skip breakfast and then we eat a big afternoon meal together.

reply

Yes being married makes doing weird diet habits really hard! Of course kids don’t care

Also saved on buying food, so more opportunity to stack sats.

reply

One of the most overlooked benefits barely ever mentioned in the fasting literature!

reply

Fasting makes you stack sats faster.

reply

I do a 72 hour every January. A lot of people go their whole lives without experiencing real hunger. I think it's a grounding experience and helps me focus on gratitude that I have access to healthy delicious food everyday among other things. Also there are real physical health benefits I think.

reply

Yes, in my understanding plenty of benefits.

I also see it that we in the west over consume anyhow.

Our ancestors fasted out of necessity, our bodies can handle this.

reply

Do you eat anything or just clear liquids?

reply

Yeah water fast. Which for includes tea.

reply

Any coffee or saltwater/broth?

reply

Not a coffee drinker, so that is not an issue.

No saltwater/electrolytes, a lot of discussion about that online, but I've never felt the need. Many of them are sweet, and I think fasting should be a discipline test, and having something sweet is not smart IMO.

I will break my fast with a broth.

reply

I try not to take the electrolyte products cause I can’t be bothered checking what kind of shit’s being added.

72-hour fast after a heavy carnivore meal, few cups of coffee in the morning, non-caffeinated tea throughout the day, adding salt to the water and magnesium glycenate at night.

reply

I want a post every hour. You can do it!!

On a good track, I can smell victory.

I think for me the hardest thing is the weather. If it was warm outside, I bet I can burn the time easily.

But cold winter months are perfect for developing a winter coat.

Time to shed

In my case, I have a varied diet, although mainly meat-based, and an excessive sweet tooth. However, because I manage my eating limits well and exercise every day (without fail, even if it's minimal), I don't have digestive problems.

By default, given my abundant and filling breakfast, I can often go 24 hours without eating, so it's common for me to go many hours without food.

What should never be lacking is water.

During the holidays, I consumed a very large amount of sweets and chocolates in different forms. However, I haven't felt bloated or heavy, nor have I had any health problems or discomfort.

After years of following this pattern, I believe the ideal is:
1. Drink plenty of water (more than 2 liters per day) and more than 4 liters per day if you do intense exercise.

2. Exercise regularly, some cardio, and some strength training. You don't really need weights, just a firm surface and your body.

3. Reduce your meals to 1-2 and try to make sure they are as natural and chemical-free as possible. In my area, there are many organic farms and rural crops, although nowadays you can also buy them online. If you have land, cultivate it.

4. Avoid sugars, alcohol, processed foods, etc., in your daily life.

5. Treat yourself to something sweet once or twice a month. This way, when it comes time to indulge during holidays, it won't affect you as much. I'm addicted to chocolate fondant for dessert when I go out to eat.

6. At social events, replace soft drinks, alcohol, and similar beverages with water with lemon, tea, or natural juices (although you have to be mindful of the fructose).

Following this pattern, I lost 12 kg in 3 months, and after 5 months I started toning my body. The amazing thing is that I have even more energy than before.

If anyone is doing something similar or has any concerns, let's talk.

reply

What does "fast" mean? No food and water/liquids? Or just no food?

reply

When I say fast I mean water fast.

reply

It depends from free time.
