I think they will soon blame climate change. An ancient fault line has been activated due to stress of melting glaciers. https://www.businessinsider.com/east-coast-earthquake-came-from-ancient-sleeping-fault-reactivated-2024-4
I didn't even know we still had glaciers around here.
reply
I am not sure what you heard but that is a known active fault line system actually. Its called the Ramapo fault system (there are 4 different faults within this system). This quake though has been bigger than in the past as the USGS has logged 188 quakes at 2.5 or higher within 250 miles of NYC since 1957. I think esp. after Taiwan people are much more aware of them.
reply
I was trying to be funny. I wasn't serious. The general theory is that ice age glaciers deformed the area where the plates collided, and when the glaciers melted the plates have been in the process of springing back from that deformity over the course of time.
reply
Lol my bad! I guess since with my work I have had to explain to people that this is rare and a sign of things to come that I wanted to say that its not as crazy out there as one thinks! Earthquakes in the region are much more common than one would think!
reply
Very solid aftershock. I finally felt one
reply
I imagine you're not used to earthquakes.

No. We don't get many around here. When I lived in LA I never felt one either, though others around me did.

I think SN has a bug with territories ...
Tried to write a post but only option in the territory dropdown is pick territory.
Also tab at top of screen just shows three options: home, ------------, and create.
I see new posts getting created, so I don't think it affects everybody. @ek @k00b
Did the NY earthquake break territories?!?
reply
It's bugging here too. If you want to make a post, find a post from the territory where you want to post, click on the territory tag and then you can post in that territory.
reply
Yes I figured this out after I sent the reply. Thanks for the heads up.
reply
Just realized I could do that.
reply
Was just coming here to post a screenshot. When I log out, I can see territories, but not when I'm logged in. Glad it's not just me.
reply
Just encountered this issue as well.
reply
Definitely the earthquake.
reply
On it. Not sure what happened.
reply
You can still access territories by clicking the territory tab next to a post but you can't select a territory when posting and the dropdown menu on the home screen isn't working either.

I literally just heard about it from a friend and was wondering if anyone in NY had felt it. Looks like it was centered in NJ.

My whole life I have been fascinated by earthquakes, yet I never feel them. When I lived in LA I was eating at a restaurant when everyone jumped up and ran out of the restaurant. I was eating my burger, wondering where the hell everyone was going. I must be missing some sensors.

Rushed off after work to meet Inadi and her family. I remember it like it happened yesterday - how she and her South African comrades tried out their Afrikaans lesson on us.
Life has taken a more serious turn since those carefree days in Kumamoto. We talked about its powerful punches - inflation, cost of living, having to do too much but be present too little - but for that one hour, our chatter was light and joyous.
I’m glad that my decision to join the Japan Exchange Teaching program so many years ago made me so happy today. My circumstances might have changed, but I’m the same old me, eager to learn more about the Big Bad World out there.

The truth is, one cannot believe in authority and be free, because accepting the myth of government is accepting one's own obligation to obey a master, which means accepting one's own enslavement.
Sadly, many people believe that begging the master, via political action, is all they can do. So they forever engage in rituals which only legitimize the slave-master relationship, instead of simply disobeying the tyrants.
The idea of disobeying authority, breaking the law and being criminals is more disturbing to them than the idea of being a slave.

I've found motivation is a lie. It cheats you when you need it. It fails you when you want it. And it makes you feel guilty for not achieving when you lacked it.
For me only discipline works, I get up and go to the gym at 5am not because I'm motivated to go, hell I really don't want to be dragging my ass out of bed to go and lift that early. But I do, because that's what time it is. It's time to go lift. Just like brushing your teeth... You don't skip it, it's just that time to do that task, only discipline you can really rely on.
reply
It's not every day that you have to look for motivation, but it all starts with a shot of motivation that then depends on the effort and discipline you put into it, motivation doesn't last forever.
reply
Yessir 🫡 it starts with that little spark of motivation and then discipline takes over. Once its routine you don't need to rely on motivation so much
