You receive a cowboy (in your case, cowgirl 🤠) hat when you spend 100 sats in total within 24 hours. And you keep the hat spending every day 100 sats. This is how it works.

I was quiet on here yesterday so thats probably why I didn't manage to spend 100 sats in time... i have learnt that lesson!

I guess the debt lust was already a thing early in the 20th century.

Debt was an ugly word and an ugly concept to Olive. A bill unpaid past the fifteenth of the month was a debt. The word had connotations of dirt and slovenliness and dishonor. Olive, who truly believed that her family was the best in the world, quite snobbishly would not permit it to be touched by debt. She planted that terror of debt so deeply in her children that even now, in a changed economic pattern where indebtedness is a part of living, I become restless when a bill is two days overdue. Olive never accepted the time-payment plan when it became popular. A thing bought on time was a thing you did not own and for which you were in debt. She saved for things she wanted, and this meant that the neighbors had new gadgets as much as two years before we did.
reply

I always preferred the Austrian side of economics.

Just signed up to be a presenter at a teacher's conference. Wish me luck:

With the prevalence of Gen AI tools, I find it easier to plan and design English lessons that are tailored to my students' needs. I enjoy capitalising on the different tools to cater to the multiple intelligences (visual, auditory, verbal) of my students of differing profiles. I find that this helps them learn and retain new concepts better. My presentation will showcase the use of Difit, Magic School.AI, Wave.Video, among other tools.

100 Years of Energy Innovation Suppression #516286

..."So, do we repeal the Invention Secrecy Act? Well, that will never happen, nobody will risk their career voting for it. They'll say, 'some inventions need to be hidden for national security.'
Whenever you hear that phrase 'national security' remember, it's not your security they're protecting it's theirs. The solution is simple, but it's not one that inventors want to hear: If you create a free energy device that you can prove works DO NOT PATENT IT, publish your invention anonymously on the internet and make it freely available to everyone.

No set plans. We will just do some exploring. We will probably check out Panama early next year.

reply

Ive visited Panama and really liked it. If I hadn't been to Costa Rica just before I think Panama might have been more impressive but I was just blown away by CR.

The canal was really cool, and Panama City itself was a really cool city.

reply

I was in Costa Rica once. We stayed in a little town on the Pacific coast called Samara. I really liked everything about Costa Rica. Regarding Panama, we're probably also going to stay in Panama City. Looking for recommendations!

reply

The canal was a really cool thing to see. But my wife and I just stayed in a hotel in the center of the city. Any hotel is just a hotel so I wouldn't be able to give real useful advice on areas. And we didn't stay long in the city. We mostly stayed in a little island called bocas del toro. Beautiful Carribbean island.

As for Costa Rica we stayed near Tortuguero. But also went further inland to the hot springs and mountains. Standard touristy stuff. But their way of life and their people, that was just incredible to see. Most of them don't have bank accounts and they all just seem to have this really chilled out and trust based way of life, it was such a stark contrast to the UK.

reply

Pura vida! The people were wonderful. Next time I would like to check out the mountains and visit San Jose.

Closed twelve browser tabs, so I can already feel accomplished this morning. Time for coffee.

reply

Good, what next?

reply

Yeah, take it easy. Keep pushing yourself like that, you're likely to burn out.

MainstreamMainstream

The Old English word stream refers to “a course of water”, which comes from the Proto-Germanic “strauma”.

Other words meaning “stream” are as follows:

  • Old Saxon - strom
  • Old Norse - straumr
  • Danish - strøm
  • Swedish - ström
  • Norwegian - straum
  • Dutch – stroom

The Old English word “mægen” meaning “power”, “strength” or “force” became the word “main” over time.

By the 1660’s the word mainstream would refer to a “principal current of a river”, and by the 1830’s the word mainstream would also mean a “prevailing direction in opinion” or “popular taste”.

In the early 1980’s the term “mainstream media” began to become popular, and would refer to large organised media outlets, usually licensed and controlled by the state.

NEWSNEWS

The word news is in fact an acronym meaning North, East, West and South, and referred to the compass that was used to navigate the oceans.

A mainstream media outlet would “cast” their “net” in a “broad-cast” to reach a large audience, where a news “anchor-man” would “anchor” you within the “current” events.

Both TV and “news-papers” use “head-lines” to catch the “fish”, and are referred to as “the hook”, with television “channels” directing or "channelling” your thoughts in the direction of the official narrative.

You are the “fish”.

Note: all mainstream media is now considered as “infomercials”, with the title “news” being nothing more than a logo, hence they can now give opinion-based editorials, or just lie.

Thanks for the etymology.

reply

I was kid in the 80s and my dad would listen to Rush Limbaugh. It was my intro to politics and I believe he was the one that popularized the term "mainstream media". It was his way of differentiating himself. I've noticed over the years, especially with those that have only lived in an Internet world that there is a huge gap in knowledge about the past. It often seems that if someone isn't in the first page of the search results it didn't happen.

I've never heard of the news acronym things before. That's interesting if true. What I've always heard is news was based on the root word new. As in new things. Today there is rarely anything on "news" that is new.

I don't like the term "mainstream media" anymore though. In a sense it used to mean something but today it really has little meaning. The label "Corporate Press" is one I like better. It better describes the incentives and includes things like Fox who don't really consider themselves mainstream.

To me as I talk to people I know or even just meet in public, I find that they do not share the values of the corporate press. I guess I'm saying calling the corporate press mainstream has become a kind of psyop. As if one that doesn't align with them is out of step.

reply

Rush used to say this in his later years
