Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
People don’t gather around you when you need them. People gather around you when they need you. This is why the political class around the world today can’t be really called “leaders.” THEY need the people around them to give them validity. ACTUAL leaders are already valid and people will gather around them BECAUSE of that.

The cuteness continues when the other person says sama sama which means same same whenever you say terima kasih 😀

That's awesome :) BTW "sama" is also "same" in Estonian :)

There are a few other Indonesian etymologies I really like:
Orangutan (one of the few words English borrowed) Orang=person hutan=Forest. Person of the forest. Matahari = Sun, Mata=eye. Hari=Day. Eye of the day.

Thats is cool! Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised they don't use "matahari" for Sunday then as well? BTW Sunday in my native Estonian is "pühapäev" which in literal translation means "holy day"

Birth

When you are born, in a state hospital, it is referred to as your birth or “berth”, which is carried out by a “doctor”; however the word “berth” is a shipping term, within maritime or mercantile law.
Note: Doctor means “Dock-Tender” a person who “attends”, or “functions” at the dock. They are “docking a vessel” meaning the birth of a baby from its mother’s water.
The term “berth” means when a ship or vessel has left its allotted place at a wharf or dock, which is usually conducted by a “doctor”.
So the date of “berth” is when your name was registered with the system and recorded by the “doctor”, who works for the “shipping company” within commerce using mercantile law.
When asked what is your date of “berth” they are asking for the date your mother or “vessel” was “berthed” at the “dock” and delivered the “cargo” meaning you.
It would be advisable to question this and ask them “do you mean when was I born?”
Note: When you are unwell, you “dock into harbour”, a doctor will offer you a contract of illness, and if you accept will enter into an agreement to buy drugs. You have now “contracted” an illness and are in debt to the doctor for the drugs.

I had an epiphany when I was marking my students’ work yesterday.
I was struck by how some of them wrote exactly the way they spoke. Which was a great glimpse into their minds because they wrote a personal recount entirely in the present tense.
Intrigued, I consulted Gemini:
I used to think my students didn’t know how to code switch between Singlish and English.
++Now, I believe that** their lapse into the present tense is actually a sign of interference from their mother tongue. In Malay, there is no need to change the base verb tense.
So, I think in order to better their writing, we might need to change the way they speak. Since they use the same informal register for both speaking and writing, we can help them develop code-switching skills. For example, after the Google Meet meeting, I helped Rifa’ie with his diary entry. I got him to narrate his sepak takraw match first. After I corrected him a couple of times, he naturally adopted the past tense for the rest of his entry.
Building on this, I propose that our speaking assignments next term could incorporate a story-telling component so that students could practise speaking in the past tense.
