Technically the week is not yet done but I think we know the 49ers will be a super bowl contender if their star players stay healthy and that the Jets will be better than last year and compete for a playoff spot (if not the division) if Rodgers stays healthy and can be even 80% of what he used to be.
My biggest takeaway from week 1 is you can't really glean much from week 1.
Eagles offense looks really good. Maybe. Cowboys are better than I thought. Maybe. Patriots are not the second worst team in the league. Maybe. Lions are a super bowl contender. Maybe.
Two things I can be sure of after week 1:
Panthers are the worst team in the league. Yes. Patrick Mahomes has running and receiving weapons again and is still Patrick Mahomes and still has Andy Reid as a play caller. Yes. Yikes.
A lot of sloppy play. Tons of penalties. Many high scoring games.
Let's see what week 2 has in store for us.
Survivor Pool recap post, rebuy and pick window coming up tomorrow morning from @NFLsurvivor2024.
Sats for all, GR
Ready to buy back in and swear off the Bengals! With what I saw I don't think they are a serious contender anymore. I remember reading about Burrows's wrist injury and how even with surgery there were going to be long-term issues with osteoarthritis and inflammation issues. Not to mention it was said it could take up to a year to fully recovery and since he wasn't able to throw the ball more than 5 yards down the field that's a huge red flag.
reply
I got burned by the Bengals in my other survivor league. At least that one didn't have a buy-in.
reply
I mean the fact @grayruby got bit in week one as well is wild!
reply
I didn't catch that. Who did he take?
reply
I had the Bengals
reply
Fuckin bengals
reply
Oh well. Juices the pot early with some rebuys incoming tomorrow.
reply
2 fumbles didn't help the Bengals chances but Burrow doesn't look 100% yet. He wasn't bad but he wasn't good either.
reply
Yeah I mean he looked average at best because of his ability to not throw the ball down field. I know they were short a receiver but you cant win if you can only through 5 yards down field
reply
You didn't see Jimmy G take the 49ers to the Super Bowl five years ago only throwing the ball 5 yards down field? Haha Surprisingly Mahomes only averaged 7 yards per pass play last year but he has the threat of the deep ball and the scramble that opens up a lot of short over the middle for him.

Jimmy G was what I would call a game manager. Just like AJ McCarron was at Alabama. He threw the ball to keep the defense off-guard but the run/option game is what was the bread and butter. Bengals to me are built to be a pass first team and if you do that you gotta be able to chunk the ball.
That is wild about Mahomes though... Granted he also had to struggle with WR unable to catch a ball so that had to def hurt any sort of deep pass unless it was to Kelce lol
reply
Yeah the Chiefs won because of D and Mahomes mastery last year not because they were an offensive force.

Ready for week 2!
reply
Once the 49ers take care of @siggy47 @StillStackinAfterAllTheseYears's Jets tonight I will be ready for week 2!
reply
You might not be ready then... just saying... let them play the game first :-)
reply
Just a little friendly trash talk. I do think it will be a close game.
reply
I hear ya, week one is such a liar. If the Jets win it will be "Superbowl", if Jets lose it will be "same old Jets".... We need at least 4 games (old quarter of the season) to make an educated guess, and even that it is a definite maybe :-) I'm just curious at this point, You are right, let's have a good game, that's all we can ask for....
reply
That's fandom. When it looked like the Rams were going to steal a victory from the Lions last night, despite the Rams being down most of their OLine and Nacua, Lions fans were apoplectic. Then they just power ran right over a completely exhausted Rams D in OT and fans were sure they were the most dominant team ever assembled and they were going 20-0 and winning the SB. Haha.
reply
OK, you ARE ready now :-) the Jest played like crap, couldn't stop the nose bleed. Niners were like - no McCaffrey, no problem.... Where was the "very good" Jets defense? Aaron looked rusty as hell... oh well, its week one, let's move on....
reply
Biggest issue is Jets could not stop the run. Their secondary played pretty well. Purdy was ok but didn’t have a great game. Kittle and Jennings had nice games but didn’t go off. Aiyuk looked like someone who didn’t have a training camp.
As crazy as it sounds because he is reigning offensive player of the year it might have been a disadvantage for the Jets for CMC to be out. CMC runs off tackle a lot more and plays a bigger role in the passing game so if Jets game planned for that and instead got a power runner attacking between the tackles it’s not surprising they had some trouble with it but it is concerning they weren’t able to adapt in the second half.
I thought Rodgers was ok especially for a 41 year old who hasn’t played a full game in a year and a half. He had some nice moments. The interception wasn’t a great pass but it wasn’t bad, Lenoir just made a great play to get his hand in and tip it up and it happened to land in the 49ers LBs hands.
I think the Jets will be fine. Tough week 1 matchup for them on the road. Hopefully they will be sharper next week.

Couldn't say better myself. TN is next we shall see then....

Not sure if anyone watched the Packers vs Eagles in Brazil, but the league should be ashamed of how horrible the field was. Players slipping left and right had a huge impact on the game. Additionally, the ref/penalty calling was absurd. Couple hugely consequential calls that would have stopped the Eagles final drive, like a phantom defensive holding call on a defensive tackle... It was a shame.
reply
Yeah the field was bad and the officiating was terrible.
reply
I agree with this
reply
Don't forget the NYG are trash
reply
That's true. They might be worse than the Patriots. They will still probably beat the Cowboys and or Eagles at least once this year.
reply
We can also be sure that the Chiefs will get tons of help from the refs (even though they don't need it) and that holding will not be called when blocking Maxx Crosby no matter how blatant or egregious.
I'm tempted to parlay the Jets money line with the under. I did that with the Steelers and it was a big hit. I still expect the 49ers to be win and be really good, but there's a chance of a sloppy offense defensive slog.
reply
Great week 1! Great to have football back. But one thing I miss is the overall toughness of the game. This roughing the passer calls are a bit meh. I know the sport is basically a television show now and QBs need protection but man seems like you can barely get a hit on them.
Also I noticed the overall QB play is kinda of terrible. No one seems to be making throws from the pocket and on time. The terrible numbers put up by the majority of quarterbacks is laughable. Got dudes like Watson and Cousins stealing money. Will Levis was terrible along with Bryce Young. It’s a shame these young players get zero time to develop and what it leads to is a waterdowned product.
reply
Do you think the poor QB play is because starters don't really play in the preseason anymore and if they do it is only for a couple series?
reply
Honestly I think the new CBA and players having way less practice time. They don’t practice much in pads and two a days are now illegal I think. But the lack of practice time shows up in how the OL blocks. Growing up teams were still hyper competitive with an okay QB and a star RB. Now besides the 49ers a star running back can’t carry a team to the playoffs. The lack of time to practice has really hurt the middle class football team. It hollowed the league out. It’s feast or famine now.
reply
32 teams 14 make the playoffs
Kansas City has won 2 straight super bowls but the most valuable team financially is Dallas
The players want less practice time. Blame the players and antitrust laws
Middle class teams? 32 teams split television revenue unlike baseball and basketball.
Dan Rooney said free agency would bankrupt teams and the league, 1987. His premise was that player salaries would grow at the expense of teams. The fallacy of zero sum. The focus should be on growing the pie. Jerry Jones understands this better than anyone.
reply
Middle class as in chance to win the championship. Not from a revenue/valuation perspective
reply
There is more parity today than in previous years because of free agency, franchise tags and salary cap.
First year of free agency was 1993
reply
Hardly. The Free agency super teams all fail massively. Players benefit the most not teams. I can argue free agency stops teams from becoming completely dominant. All teams have holes.
reply
Therefore more parity
Instead of hollowing out the so called middle class teams, it does the opposite
How many teams have a chance to win the Super Bowl?
14 teams make the playoffs but only 7 or less have a realistic shot at winning the Super Bowl
reply
7 or fewer have chance to win Super Bowl
7 teams are playoff bound but not contenders
18 teams have zero chance to win a championship because they don’t make the playoffs
Playoffs? Jim Mora
reply
Even 7 might be a stretch.
Week ONE is a liar, don't take too much from it.... just saying... it means nothing based on history...
reply
By week 9 everyone will forget week one. NFL is a week to week league.
18 weeks is a long season. Who remembers week one from last year? I only remember the Chargers losing to the dolphins in a close high scoring game.
Football has the highest ratio of opining about a team/ actual length of playing time. We spend 6.5 days talking about 3 hour game.
Football also has the most national coverage. Every team is discussed. No one is ignored. Regardless of how good or terrible
reply
I remember the Chiefs losing to the Lions week one last year and the 49ers absolutely steamrolling the Steelers.
But yes week one doesn’t really matter. We will find out what teams are real contenders in the coming weeks.
