Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.

We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
I have a question that I hope you can help me with. Both -ful and -ous suffixes mean full of. I know -ous is Latin. How did these two different suffixes come about in the first place? Would you know?
reply
-ful is from from Old English/Germanic as literally ‘full of’.
I guess they have both come to mean the same thing but initially with the under-educated using -ful (ie a bountiful harvest) as oppose to the educated ecclesiastical Latin speakers using -ous (ie a bounteous harvest) dating back to the Middle Ages.
reply
Oh my days, you made me so happy!
N I can’t believe you spelt ecclesiastical just like that. I haven’t seen this word before. More learning for me!

You are welcome. I don’t get to drop words like that everyday!

Finally starting East of Eden
Such things have disappeared perhaps because men do not trust themselves any more and when that happens there is nothing left except perhaps to find some strong sure man, even though he may be wrong, and to dangle from his coattails.

The humilities are piled on a soldier, so Cyrus said, in order that he may, when the time comes, be not too resentful of the final humility—a meaningless and dirty death.

Sometimes a kind of glory lights up the mind of a man. It happens to nearly everyone. You can feel it growing or preparing like a fuse burning toward dynamite. It is a feeling in the stomach, a delight of nerves, of the forearms. The skin tastes the air, and every deepdrawn breath is sweet. Its beginning has the pleasure of a great stretching yawn; it flashes in the brain and the whole world glows outside your eyes. A man may have lived all of his life in the gray, and the land and tress of him dark and somber. The events, even the important ones, may have trooped by faceless and pale. And then--the glory--so that a cricket song sweetens his ears, the smell of the earth rises chanting to his nose, and sweetens his ears, the smell of the earth rises chanting to his nose, and dappling light under a tree blesses his eyes. Then a man pours outward, a torrent of him, and yet he is not diminished. And I guess a man's importance in the world can be measured by the quality and number of his glories. It is a lonely thing but it relates us to the world. It is the mother of all creativeness, and it sets each man separate from all other men.

reply
Yes that is true, but in this case of a contest race, the hidden option will disadvantage others. That means is NOT a fair game. We are all hidden, or we are all visible if we want the game to be fair.
reply
and my next question😁 what exactly is the game? As far as I can see it is about getting the longest streak? Am I missing something? I like your way of thinking though - I came on Nostr because I like the transparency
reply
On SN, you can choose to organise a bounty. This means that you have a task in mind n pledge a certain amount of sats in advance so that they can be given to the Stacker whom you deem as the winner.
You can pay out the bounty to multiple winners if you are pleased with many Stackers’ responses.
As the organiser, you have the right to decide the winner based on your criteria but I chose to select the Stacker with the top comment so that the winner is decided fair and square.
I hope this is clear!

In a world that is time bound there is no present moment...when you shift it's like you continuously in the present...the tiniest of details are noticed...you get lost in the beauty of every leaf, every flower, the silhouette of the tree against the evening sky...you notice the different hues of roofs dotting the landscape...as darkness creeps in the lights come on...then it's all light, all bright...the lengthening shadows no more...doors close, curtains are drawn...you are in your own space... tomorrow a new day will dawn...and you will observe it all...till nightfall🌄

Tis why we need to stop calling it health care and instead call it sick care.
When people are fat and sick and depressed they are subservient. That and they become a cash cow. Can't make money off people illness if they're not ill. I don't think it's coincidence that there's more money to be made in long term illness management than there is in a cure.

Nautical Terms

The legal system and the language we use today still exhibit the origins of maritime law, or “law of the sea”, with many words referencing nautical terms, which few people notice.
One of the more common suffixes added to words is the word “ship”, which references the action of boarding a ship or “vessel”, which has a controlling body, with a set of rules.
Although innocent enough, it can be a dangerous trap to fall into if you do not recognise its true meaning.
So before you decide to “come on board” an “anything –ship”, it would be prudent to know who runs it and what the rules are, as you are about to travel the “waters of commerce”.

Leadership

Taken from the Old English word “lithan”, which means “to go” or “to guide”, the word leadership refers to the action of going somewhere together with others, with the first use of this word being in the late 1700’s.
However, the Greek root word for leader is “agogue”, and when added to the prefix “dem”, from the Greek word “demos”, meaning “people”, dem-agogue means “people-leader” or “leader of the people”.
To board the “ship of being lead”, means to trust the captain of the vessel and therefore, before following any leader, be sure they are treading the right path, or steering a true ship.

Rulership

The word rulership, which was first recorded around the year 1640, refers to the act or fact of ruling, or the state of being ruled.
The root word rule is from Middle English “reule”, which is also spelt “rewle”, and is borrowed from the Old French word “riule”, which was from the Latin word “regula”, meaning “straight stick”, “bar”, or “lord”.
Once the unsuspecting person has accepted a ruler, they have boarded the “ship of rule” and, with the loss of their sovereignty, must obey the regulations from their master.

Worship

The word worship is based upon the word “worth”, which has its origins founded on the Old English word “weorþ”, which means “significant”, “valuable”, “appreciated” and “deserving”.
To worship someone or something, such as a god or deity, is to come on board the “wor-ship” vessel and allow yourself to be governed as one of the legion, within the “re-legion”.
Note: when choosing to worship a deity, it may be prudent to ask who owns it.

My father used to work in a poultry market. He thought turkeys could sense when you were coming to kill them. They would get very aggressive and focus on attacking your groin. That's why I'm still afraid of them. The turkeys I encounter are never hunted. It's prohibited.
